The plan was always to give this thing more power, after speaking with Simon Norris of Norris Designs who built the engine he confirmed the engine was built to take 800bhp plus.... which for me was very good new, not only did it give a piece of mind for safety when driving hard at 555bhp but it also gives the choice to go for more power in the future. My dream has always been to own a 600hp plus evo, it's easily achievable number for a 4G63 2.0 engine but the main draw back is it costs a lot and sometimes reliability which means it needs to be build right using the correct parts and not cheap badly built aftermarket parts. I am confident it has been build correctly by one of the best in the evo tuning bisiness.

Needless to say I started buying parts a while back to increase power. The first item I bought was a AMS VSR inlet manifold.

Aluminium always goes dull very quickly so attacked it with some autosol.

These have been tested and used a lot with proven bhp and torque gains so was a easy choice to make. It turned out the previous owner had ran anti-lag with it as it has a extra take off to run a throttle by-pass ( far right 27mm diameter take off on the far right)

Unfortunately I don't want to run full Anti-lag as I don't want to change turbos often or refresh the engine more regularly! Although it would be cool aha. I have a mild version of anti lag AKA pops and bangs to keep me entertained! This needed blanking off with some silicone hose and Dan from AK Automotive in Newcastle made me a bung.

I eventually got around to fitting it over this past few week, not a big job and fairly straight forward.

Exciting times ahead..... More soon.

A nice suprise when fitting the inlet was that it turns out the car has a ported head.... Champion!

Just as a note to anyone else wanting to fit a different inlet manifold is a few other things need changing to suit. Firstly, the upper boost pipe needs adjusting as the inlet sits lower down in the engine bay. Not a massive problem, a quick cut to the boost pipe and add in a fillet piece and sent it off to PlaysKool Motorsport to weld it up whilst I head off to the F1 testing in Barcelona to get away from the snow we were having!

Hate snow... well, when I need to work on the car.

Finished pics later.....

The dipstick tube also needed changing as it has nothing to bolt to on the AMS inlet. For some reason the supplied dipstick tube had an AN fitting in it so this needed removing. Luckily it was glued in so some heat loosened it off and the AN fitting was removed.

Finally, the new fuel line was extended to the bulk head.

Sorry for the dark picture but it's usually dark when I work on the car lol and cold!!!

Next on the job list was rewiring the broken Coil on Plug kit and adding new coils. Old:

A late night with some beer consumed....

Jobs a carrot:

Since I do sprints it was time to think about what to do regarding oil surge. I'd like a dry sump but since they are suitable for cars that do many road miles like mine I've gone for a NR Autosport baffled sump. Here it is against the standard sump:

Not sure why I took this photo but it was interesting to see the oil level on the dipstick on the right when fitting the sump.

And a cheeky one of the beefy rods!

More engine news coming next!

With the new NR sump and my own coil on plug kit fitted along with the AMS VSR inlet manifold installed with the top intercooler pipe welded up its time for the main ingredient.... the turbo! Bearing in mind the car previously ran a Precision 5558 gen 1 turbo using the smaller .64 AR turbine housing. I always planned on getting a bigger turbo but the question is how big do you go? Flange sizes are the same on a lot of the bigger precision units so fitment isn't a problem, my main concern was lag and top end power. The only thing that was holding my engine back was the standard head which seems to cap the power at around 640-650bhp for this power range I'd have gone with a 5858 turbo BUUUT I actually thought I'd try for more so my plan was to fit a big valve ported head to allow more flow up top and hopefully break 700bhp. I did a deal on a big valve ported head and ordered a Precision 6062 Gen2 .82 turbine housing in duel ceramic ball bearing flavour! Rated to 750+bhp! Unfortunately the deal on the head fell through. I did however also buy a set of oversized valves and new guides to suit. But after removing the inlet manifold and seeing the head had already been ported as per the previous post I didn't have the heart to go ahead and redo the porting as it just didn't make sense!

Next up was tiding up the engine bay which involved removing all of the ally tanks and polishing them up but also riding up the rocker cover as the paint had started peeling off! Thanks to ASBO Coatings in Birtley for the acid dip, blasting and powercoating in championship white.

Fitted!

Hard job keeping this thing clean!

I'm way behind on this thread, meaning I have dyno results lol. After taking the car to EvoTune for mapping on the Link G4+ ECU they came across a problem... the inlet manifold was leaking.... great....
When I dropped the car off it had a air leak but since I only finished fitting it at 11pm the night before I didn't have time to investigate. The leak was found at the flange to the throttle body so a new flange was welded on thanks to the boys at EvoTune, it also turned out I need a new set of injectors which is a piece of mind as I was thinking of getting the old ones cleaned and tested!

After mapping the final results were 623bhp at 2.0-2.1 bar of boost.

Engine bay before and after. Looks way better now and I have some good heat wrap to go on the turbo inlet and boost pipes to tidy them up.

What a truly amazing project! Such incredible attention to detail and no expense spared. That inlet is a work of art and puts mine to shame laugh

Have you taken it to Santa Pod yet?

Thanks, I haven't been to Santa Pod as it's a million miles away. I might compete in Ten of the Best this year though as they use a drag strip as part of the competition. It would be interesting to see what time it can get, hoping for low 11s and maybe a 10 if I can get a very good launch! Only one way to find out!

Now that all the engine work was complete another trip to EvoTune was in order for a MOT and 4 wheel laser alignment, I was looking forward to this as I got to see the results my custom top mounts have made combined with the caster bush and whiteline camber bolts. The Evo now has 2.5 degrees of camber and 6 degrees of caster!!!

The Evo was also treated to a new set of wheels in the form of a set of Bola B1 18 x 9.5" et 30 for road driving to save the R888r's for the sprints. The new wheels came with 235/40/18 Westlake Sport RS Drift tyres [emoji38] The Bola's are pretty big for a early Evo! And unfortunately my brakes catch the inside of the wheel so a small amount of grinding was on order. Anyway, here they are!

Potentially going to paint them white.

smileabsolutely beautiful evo ,exceptional car,a real credit to you.

-not entirely sure id1000s would hold more than 600bhp though-my scoob made 497 at the wheels a couple of weeks ago and mapper reckoned 580 tops at the flywheel-(16% losses)-id1000s and bosch 044 flat out at that too, even with 3.5 bar static pressure-pity really as the turbo had more to give ...smile

Thank you,

I did talk to Jamie from EvoTune quite a bit about what was required to upgrade the car from the 555bhp it was to get it over 600bhp as the fuel system was one of my concerns but he assured me he has ran ID1000's and a 400lr/hr walbro numerous times at around 640-650bhp, It was the fuel pump that would need upgrading first. Bearing in mind I bought new injectors off him before mapping.

Some Evos I've seen are making 700bhp on ID1000's!

Which injectors are you putting in?

in complete fairness a 400ltr/hr pump is way above the output of a single 044-with a walbro 255 lift pump

almost no small engine cars run vpower at 700bhp so the flow rates needed are even higher on meth or race fuel-
take a large pinch of salt to claims of 700bhp on id1000 injectors ,highest i,ve heard of is mid 600s - run flat out- most cars i see run id1600 or 2000s ,my understanding is vpower lacks det resistance at very high boost levels needed (2.3 bar+) to reach 700 in a 4 pot engine .

i thought my own setup would have made more-tuner has seen 630 on very similar set up(and a race car to boot) -my swirl pot is a funny though space efficient design that stands the 044 in parralel to the swirl pot so the fuel goes throygha 90 degree angle to fill the pot - its probably a number of small things but pressure was dropping off at 2 bar on the rolling road-called it quits at that.

mine is a high compression 2.1 litre closed deck(syvecs ecu) with a 35r hybrid to reduce lag-boost capped at 1.9 bar so runs in the "proper" 1.6 bar + zone .

my efforts now are to make the car more usable with more road orientated suspension ,absolutely sick to death of solid top mount coilovers with no travel hammering over bumps and potholes... and find some decent pads for the 6 pots lol

Yes I agree with what you are saying!
I was looking at running Ethanol, E98 as Evotune keep it in stock but unfortunately it needed more than just and injector swap lol so maybe in the future when I upgrade my fuel system with a swirl pot like yours. Race fuel would be a good option also although it's expensive per litre. For me the first port of call is a big valve ported head as that seems to have run out of flow at the top end.

First event of the year for me was the Javelin Sprint Series at Snetterton in the TME after a host of upgrades over winter upgrades including a bigger turbo, bigger inlet manifold, baffled sump and various suspension component upgrades (which you can read about in my build thread in my signature) only having final mapping the week before the event and MOT and alignment on the Thursday before the Easter bank holiday was starting to look like I wouldn't be going but thanks to EvoTune for getting everything sorted in time.

Since I live in Durham it's a long drive to Norfolk and since I don't have a trailer or a tow car the only option was to drive the 250 miles, do the sprint hope nothing breaks and drive 250 miles back. So I set off the night before and slept in the Evo at the track ??.

The day started as usual, sign on, scrutineerig, briefing, noise check...... ugh noise check. Bearing in mind Snetterton has a static noise limit of 105db, First attempt.... 108db... spectacular fail! After warming the car up on the sighting laps another attempt saw a 106db so just a small fail. Only thing for it was to make a bung, but out of what exactly? A monster energy can. Harrrrray! We pass! 104db, We are good to go. I must ad this car has been on track twice beford and never had problems with noise!

The sighting laps were completed in the rain. And with a lot of horsepower under the right foot any touch of the throttle ment all four wheels spinning and good fun at that [emoji38] so a little bit of sideways whilst we were going slowly [emoji16].

The first run was pretty treturios in the wet conditions as it was still raining the Omega Evo span off in front of me which allowed me to get a re-run. Using wet racing lines on the Run 1 re-run I put in a 2:40 lap time good enough for 3rd overall for that run.

Run 2 saw the conditions similar as the first very slippy and no dry line, with some standing water except it's time push on for results, up the boost to medium setting. Get a good start, sideways almost every corner even using wet lines we start catching the Omega Evo. Wasn't sure if to abort the run or go for an overtake, it was a good lap so choose to overtake, without much time to think around the outside of Coram we go, slippy as hell with a dab of opposite lock under braking we finish with a 2:34 1st and fastest overall time in the wet tricky conditions! Not bad considering the tyres I opted for were Westlake Sport RS designed for drifting!!! Unfortunately i forgot to press record on my cam for this!
Due to passing another car a re-run was offered and thinking I could better it (I like the wet) it took it... and proceeded to go off the track after locking up on the brakes[emoji58], lap time: 2:43 but later find it was disallowed due to breaking noise limits.

Run 3 was greasy, very greasy with the ground still wet but odd dry patch to make you think you could go fast it was easy to get caught out. Lap times dropped to a 2:28 2nd fastest overall for run 3 just half a second behind Rodney.

Run 4 saw it dry up somewhat with a good dry line appearing. No more using wet racing lines, theirs some grip in the Westlakes, I think? We find out at the first corner... backend steps out on the way in NO GRIP! Spot some dry tarmac and hope for the best for the rest of the lap. High boost 600bhp can we do it? Of course [emoji16] 2:14.812 FTD and overall fastest lap! Full road car with standard interior, no roll cage on drift tyres!

And then it's disallowed due to being over the noise limit.

So no FTD as it's too loud.

FAIL!

So overall I was a good day out and thanks to the guys who offered to help and I hope I helped others on the day too. I was a well run event and the live timing was top notch with no waiting around for times. Plenty quick cars turn up and some of them sound awesome and go pretty damn well! Unfortunately (for me at least) my only lap that counted was a wet lap so I finished 16th overall as all other cars used their dry times. Ooh well.

Here's the FTD lap that was disallowed.

http://youtu.be/pMTr1XhaMKQ

Here is a a run when it was really really greasy after it had stopped raining. trying to keep it tidy, I did go off on the previous lap so I was a little cautious. This is Run 3, 2nd fastest time overall for that run with Rodney in first in his green/silver evo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pODsBC-Q-kU

Just to ad that I had to stop and change my wheels in a lay-by on the way home as my brakes were catching the wheels!

Not bad for a shopping trolly biggrin

Thanks for reading.
Jake

Here is a comparison lap from Kenny in the Omega Evo which is an interesting watch. for those that don't know it's a mentally high spec Evo with 700hp (on V-power) and a sequential paddle shift gearbox and even a billet engine block!

After the last run at the snetterton sprint when I was changing my wheels over I noticed on of the discs had a large crack in them frown in fact..... 2 large cracks! The discs are J-hook type from Rayland motorsport annoyingly I had only put these discs on less than a year ago! not very happy as they have only done about 6,000 road miles and 3 sprints one of which was in the wet! I originally bought these as I wanted the benefits of the J-hooks but since they dont last it's back to Genuine AP for longevity and quality! The only good news is the Carbotec brake pads still have loads of life left in them (about 12mm each!) which is a relief to my wallet!

Scrap Reyland discs which I'll turn into a clock or something..... a very expensive clock!:

Genuine AP Discs from MS Motorsport, best price I could find and a good amount under retail cost:

I'm acctually slightly annoyed at myself for this next purchase. Why? After all the effort and running around I done making custom top mounts for the Ohlins and tuning the spring rates to suit my car and my driving, not to mention the extra money spent on extra 4 wheel alignments and making changes after each time on track to get the setup right (and it now handles perfectly balanced) I've gone and removed them from the car to be replaced with........

Waste no time getting them on!

Brakes on and Nitrons on

Ohlins off and up for sale.

Looking forward to the playing with the extra adjustment the Nitron R3 3 ways have over the Ohlins as they have separate adjustable low speed compression, high speed compression and rebound!

Good update, looks like fantastic fun! Fair play to you for using the car competitively as intended. I wonder if on a couple of corners you could gain some time by apexing a little later though? The bombhole being an example.

The Evo has had a few problems with loss of electrical power lately, I've narrowed it down to a dodgy alternator so have bought one from Evo GB who are an evo breakers. I didnt fancy fitting this so had booked the car into BTG Performance to fit the alternator and also carry out an alignment as I had finished fitting the Nitron NTR R3 suspension and setting ride heights and spring preload after speaking to Nitron a getting their recommend settings as a starting point.

Unfortunately when driving to BTG Performance less than one mile from my house this happened....

My propshaft broke.

It just looks like it has sheared the bolts that go into the diff flange. To make matters worse when the prop came off it put a big dent in my nice exhaust. Not ideal when I am booked for the Javelin Sprint Series at Croft on Sunday!!!

The car was recovered to BTG Performance where it was booked for an alignment and alternator. Although That was last week and they haven't started working on it as they are so busy.

After the Snetterton fiasco I bought a Simons silenced decat as one popped up for sale on the Facebook groups. This should keep the noise police happy for now!

The last alignment I had done by EvoTune it was pointed out more rear camber was needed but the standard arms were at their maximum adjustment, so after hunting for some it was hard to find some reasonably priced ones. Luckily Kenny was selling a pair of arms and thanks to him for sending them out last minute for next delivery so I can get them fitted before croft.

So we have 2 days before Croft to fix the alternator, fit rear camber arms, alignment, propshaft and have the exhaust repaired and fit the silenced decat I I had bought after the snetterton fiasco.

Im not panicking at all.....

I've sorted all the parts so all I can do is sit back and hope BTG can get the car ready whilst I drink this little lot 🤣🤣🤣
