i think you,d have to say prop bolts failing on the road was a lucky break-could have been very serious on track at 10 tenths pace- might pay to have to have a pre season checkover of the car each year and "life" components in the drivetrain and suspension accordindly.
other than that its just par for the course lol- big power scoobs eat rear driveshafts but that probably saves the diff and box.....mine just wheelspins off the line so been lucky so far with breakages-i,d say the wear and tear with moderate/heavy track use is many times over most road cars-

funny you should say about your alternator failing -i,m on my 4th in 4 years-new ones have,nt lasted any longer than the 2nd hand ones i buy from the breakers...

I'd like to say a big thanks to BTG Performance for getting the car ready on time, they finished it late Saturday for Sundays event at croft in the Javelin Sprint Series.

Very impressed with the new alignment specs, 3.3 degrees of camber and 8.3 degrees of caster! Which is way more that I was expecting, standard caster is 3.45 and non adjustable! Thanks to Kenny's rear camber arms i now have 2.3 degrees on the rear. Gone for a straight rear toe to help the rear end turn. They guys got it spot on what I asked for, top job.

They also had my old exhaust patched up by a local company so thanks to them for sorting that. The propshaft had dented the exhaust an awful lot, it was squashed about half the width of the exhaust so their was no way I was going to use that!

Not going to lie i was nervous about it not being ready in time and tested lol. Unfortunately even after the alternator change it still wouldn't charge the battery enough to start the car! Not ideal as I got stranded on my way home. Luckily a passer by gave me a jump start to get the car going and back to BTG. We couldn't find the problem and just hoped the battery would charge eventually as it was running fine otherwise.

Heading to croft the next day, my girlfriend kindly drove her car to croft too so I could use it to Jump start the Evo as my Jump pack had also given up! Not ideal way to leave home or the petrol station!

So, we arrived at the track a little late after so much messing around in the morning and went straight into the briefing, the usual happens... flags, starting proceedure.. all good. Out of the briefing and straight to scrutineering and we pass no problems, after that we head out for 2 sighting laps at the slowest pace ever, it's wet but drying... fine. Line up for practice laps and we get noise tested....

fk.

109db. Static limit is 105db

We were 104db here last year. Tested on 2 separate days!

Not to worry I have brought along the Simons Silenced de-cat so head back to paddock to change it. Comes out no problem. But putting it back in?! No bolts to fit it!!!! Old ones were threaded into the silencer so we need bolts. Imprezza man to the rescure! Cheers to Dean Simpson for donating some bolts to get me going!

Old vs new:

Get the big silencer fitted and think 'yeah! This will drop noise a good 5db and get us going'.

Noise test again.....

Fail!
108db (105db limit)

I give up.

Head home and get my Civic Type R EP3 and enter it into class J10. It's been my daily driver whilst the Evo has been getting upgrades after snetterton.

I live about 45 minutes away from the track so not too far and would like to salvage something from the day so we get back and signed on (again) with two runs left out of the 6 competitive runs you get. Quick noise test.... hurrrrrrrrraaaaay we pass!

No practice in this car so we go for a fast lap straight away. Decent enough start. First couple of corners go pretty well. Feels like a decent enough lap considering I've never had it on track before and we are on the terrible Toyo T1R's. Coming around tower the oil light comes on.... oh suger but keep it pinned and will check it in the pits, coming through the Jim Clarke Esses the engine explodes at 100mph! lots of smoke and some small flames. Bad day just got worse.
Pulled off track next to a Marshalls post and we have an small fire that they attend to quickly!

As a last kick in the nuts I had to wait 2 hours for one RAC van and another hour for a recovery truck.

A day i'd rather forget....

Hopefully i'll get a quiet exhaust for the evo and get it back on track but unfortunately the money for that will have to go into the civic to get it going again. Might be a while before the Evo is back out but we will see how it goes.

I love the Evo!

On a completely off-topic question - are those beers from Rehills in Jesmond?

Bloody 'el it wasn't your day was it!! Oil surge on rubbish tyres suggests it might have been a tad low. I guess in the heat of swapping cars and the daily not being 'race ready' it's easy to overlook something important like that. Good job K20's are plentiful and not too expensive; we've been through a couple in our EP3 race car through miss-shifts and haven't had any issues with buying them from reputable breakers.

Hope you get both cars sorted soon!

Yes I definitely need to get better at the 'spanner check'!

I was told its the high revs that kills the alternators, especially cars that rev over standard. Stock is 7000rpm and mine keeps going until 8300! and the huge turbo needs the revs, just like yours will no doubt.

Might looking into upgrading if it goes again.

Thanks.

I did have it as a backup as I wasn't sure if the Evo would be ready, so the oil was changed on the civic a couple weeks previous and over filled for safety. Didn't work. Only had 92K on it just wasn't my day at all.

I'll probably break it for spares, it wasn't a great example unfortunately.

If the alternator is being killed by the revs, can't you put a different sized pulley in it to slow it down a little?

I think if a smaller pully was fitted it wouldn't charge correctly at normal revs. Their are upgraded alternators around so i will look into that if another one fails.

Not much happening lately, I have been using it as my daily driver. The Nitrons are probably a bit to hard for that though but it's been fun! I have purchased a new exhaust which should be under 100db on the static noise test at the track, it's a Russ fellows system with the larger silencer options. I did ask if he would fit an extra silencer but he wasn't having it laugh looks a work of art, although with it being the straightest exhaust you can get for a 6 it goes under the propshaft.... with my car being so low this might not be a good thing eek.

Before this gets fitted I've been out enjoying the noise of the old exhaust biggrinbiggrinbiggrin you don't need trackdays when you have local roads like this!

I have booked to do the Javelin Sprint Series at Blyton park for next week. My first time there, looking forward to it!
Hopefully won't get any problems with noise for a change!!!

Hi guys,

Competed in the Javelin Sprint Series at Blyton park on Sunday. Here is a quick vid I knocked up, YouTube has killed the quality a fair bit so sorry about that.

My first time there so still don't know the track very well after 6 laps! 🤣

Enjoy!

Well, it's been a while.....

Found a vid on an old SD card of me blowing my transfer box up at Ten of the best 2018. I think it got bored of being sat in ques all day and decided to end it's life

I put a late entry in for TOTB, I had competed in Javelin Sprint Series at Blyton park only the weekend before and wasn't 100% on entering, but since the car was okay I put an entry in on the Monday. Unfortunately I could only enter the Saturdays event where as the main event is on the Sunday.

Not to worry. Heading down to Elvington airfield in the Evo Saturday morning was met with torrential rain, far from ideal when their is a top speed section of the event. I was fully expecting the event to be cancelled but fortunaly later in the day the sun came out.

TOTB is based on 1/4 time, top speed and times on the handling circuit. Having only entered Saturday's 'boot camp' means I couldn't compete in Sunday's event unless you WIN the boot camp. Which means getting the most points out of all the disciplines. After not checking the times for most of the day (coz I couldn't find where the organisers put them) to my surprise I was leading the boot camp entrants!!! And ended the day with the most points and a free entry into Sunday's event!

Rude not to come back the next day.

Similar to Saturday. Sunday has lots of torrential rain with it looking like the event would be cancelled but no, later in the day it would dry up. I turn up late around 11 after seeing Saturday didn't kick off till the afternoon. Even driving to the event on r888r's saw a lot of aquaplaning, slippy conditions. I wait until it's dry for some runs on the handling course. First run is just getting used to where they put the cones as they change it from Saturday.
Second run. Get to the end of the run and it sounds like gearbox/driveshaft problems, look under the car to a pool of oil..... transfer box has given up...... does it drive? Nope. That's the end of the day for me.

Call the RAC for recovery. He turns up. Refuses recovery...... ****.

Call a company local to Newcastle and whilst I wait head to to pub for a pint or a few whilst I wait.

Met some decent people on the day. Got to say the Javelin Sprint Series I'm used to are organised much better but it was still and experience. Some of the cars there are mental!!!!

Vid here (nothing special lol)

Some good pics came from some of the photographers

Here is my quickest quarter mile from TOTB, well off the fastest cars lol. Not bad for full track setup (lots of camber, dampers set stiff and tyre pressures heigh for the sprint circuit), still some time there with a better launch too. Would like to get back on the strip and get a 10 second quarter!

The Evo has been layed up since Anglesey in October. But came out for a few photos with my mate before Christmas.
