340DL was my first ever car, followed by a 360GLS. The 2.0 OHC in the 360GLS had loads of torque and the drivers seat was like an arm chair smile Good memories.

Ah, the first car I can remember is my parents blue 345 DL (1.4 renault engine). That was back in Ireland too, back in Donegal. Dad did the same, I think the car came out of Surrey or Hampshire (I still got its original UK number plate) and Dad imported it into Ireland at some point in the late eighties, early ninety's. I think it was my Mum's favourite ever car, she still chats about it now and then.

First proper clean and run out of the year today after a long winter. No issues to report so far, 700 miles done since it landed home.

At some point, despite the loss of originality, I may look at a 5th gear. I’m sure a later 5 speed box would be an easy fit. Taking it over 65 ish feels like I’m pushing it, which makes motorway journeys a slow lane jobbie.

Despite this it is still a real pleasure to drive. The seats are as comfy as my v60, the original stereo holds stations perfectly and the whole car is a an enjoyable experience.

With a heavy heart the 343 is up for sale. Lack of time and space, and other classics i'm more historically attached to. I have to say if it doesn't sell I will not be too disappointed as I'm still unsure about the decision.

Good luck with the sale smile given its condition and the work you've put into it to make it fully usable the price looks good to me!

I had one of these as my first car, I think it was only a year younger than me. Great fun driving it as the back end came round quite easily when it was wet, it must have been easy to control as I was only 18 at the time and had no experience of a rear wheel drive car before that. Only had it for 6 months before the clutch failed and would have cost more than the car was worth to fix it. So many memories from such a short time.

Sold. And a lot of phone calls. Maybe underpriced it slightly but the next owner will get a seriously lovely car.

Saw a 340DL on the M32 on the way into work this morning, it's been a very long time since I've seen this series of Volvo on the road and I'm not sure I've ever seen a diesel one before!

And I call myself a petrolhead... I shall voluntarily sin-bin myself for a short period to atone for my stupidity!
