I don't like the steering in the mk1, its to heavy and the wheel seems like its been taken out of a bus. The stg1 remap is worth it though, ours runs a Jabbasport Stg1 and Milltek Cat back.

Looks like 10% of the cars value is made up from that centre armrest, they are silly money now.

I am really starting to like these. Supposedly you can get some new uprated bushes for a few quid for the front wishbones that really tightens them up - probably worth doing as part of preventative maintenance at 120K+ miles anyway.

Will be watching with interest!

EDIT: here it is:

Lol, noticed them being expensive, it seems to be entirely there to get int he way of the handbrake,

Everything about it is a bit "Chunky", the clutch is fairly heavy and the gearchange is nice and meaty, not the last word in feedback but after the CLS it feels quite sporty.

Its my first 4WD car, tested it exciting onto a wet A road from a side road with a truck bearing down, wouldnt have chanced it in the CLS, nearly 400 bhp, rain and rwd not conducive to moving, rapidly in a straight line, mainly would be sitting waiting for the truck whilst the ESP/TCS light has an epileptic fit but it just scoots out and gets going, its decently brisk, not fast like the CLS but so different in delivery and not being an auto.

Some new tyres fitted, so a matching set, got rid of the stty "Triangle" ones on the back and drilled the air box, 47 and still doing stuff like that, sounds great biggrin

Ordered the VAGcom software so I can mess about, this car isn't staying standard !

Want 300 bhp or more, seems a decent enough base and really liking the car.

Obviously not as fast as my CLS but more suited to the driving I do, country lanes rather than motorways.

eBay is a dangerous thing, so armed with a limited budget and a hankering for a MK1 I bored myself witless looking at a motley selection that were in budget, went to see one that had rusty wings and bald tyres, gave that a miss and went to see another that was better but a long way from perfect, the really nice ones are probably double my budget. This appealed due tot he colour and the TT Sport wheels which fill the arches, so many have crap wheels on
I've looked at Mk1 TTs on eBay as well, and agree there are plenty of dogs about.

Nice to see you can still get a decent one for not too much money. TT Sport wheels, 225 engine, manual, good colour...

And be prepared for the Hairdresser comments.....
I think comments like this by people who didn't know better are largely a thing past. The Mk1 is actually getting more pleasing to the eye as time goes by.

I loved my roadster (although I did buy it in a state of high dander after TVR had racked me off!)

"Yeeve said toooo much"

But its going ok, door lock removed today as it doesnt shut properly, microswitch has gone so new one ordered and being fitted tomorrow.

Doing the cooling side as well, new coolant reservoir, flange (Fnarr) and thermostat.

New stereo fitted so have Bluetooth.

I do like it, its more fun than people give them credit for and grips well, its going to get messed with (in a good way), things like a remap and removing the rear seats, wheel refurb, suspension fiddling and god knows what else

Replaced the drivers door lock mechanism, £40 for a new one off eBay, the locks have a microswitch in and it wears out so the functions that depend on it, namely the window drop and lights on buzzer get hit and miss, plus if you shut it anything other than gently it would bang on the striker plate, the previous owner seemed to think lashing loads of great in it was the best policy, makes no difference, works perfectly now.

Got bits of cooling system to go on (tank, flange, stat), thought the thermostat had gone but it lit the check engine light and the code points to temp sensor, its reading really cool, very rarely gets to temp on the gauge and its not great on fuel so suspect it thinks its constantly cool so throwing more fuel in, hopefully changing the sensor will do the trick, certainly easier than the thermostat as its a fiddly job.

I bought a VAG COM/VCDS thing, invaluable for reading the codes and resetting them, much better than generic code readers.

Ordered some second hand headlights as mine are a bit ropey, one fills with condensation, both arent really responding to sanding.

Liking the car, suits me more than my CLS for the driving I do, CLS was a mile muncher, not really the best thing for seven miles to work and going to the gym etc.

Going to get it spot on and upgrade it a bit, taking a bit of inspiration from Pops and Bangs 996 thread, pity the weather is so grim.

Jesus christ this takes me back. I used to have a 225 roadster on a 2000 W plate in silver. Was probably around the early 2000's. Mods I did was drilling the airbag as you've done. Think I dropped in a panel filter too. Different gear knob. New dump valve. I think these only take recirc ones. Also got a copy set of the 9 spoke 18" wheels and tyres from Dave Sheldon tyres in Manchester.

I think the TT forum still offers a wealth of information.

Yeah, great forum and having the diag software makes owning aging, fairly complicated, slightly problematic cars a bit more palatable.

Always wanted one and it hasnt dissapointed, no, they arent the sharpest thing on the road but its nimble enough and has a bit of shove.

Did ponder getting a loan and going newer (TTS) but have a few itches to scratch, the Merc was lovely but limited opportunities for messing about and I like that aspect, stuff from eBay arriving daily.

Given that we were both considering that CLS and you bought it, our car buying has gone off
I’m different tangents!

I’m due to collect a facelift 2007 Cayenne 4.8S tomorrow!

Oo, do a thread !

I just like to try different things, wanted a barge, so got a barge, always had a thing for TT so got one, I expect other tangents, could get something a lot newer but kind of feel like I want to mess about with it, been out today in between showers. Never really been able to lavish time and money on cars, have more time now as the kids are older and have a bit more spare, mainly it is time though.

Tidied up under bonnet,

Put the plastics back with new stainless bolts, bit of cleaning, replaced the header tank and coolant.

Because the old one looked like this,

The car had its Head Gasket done a while back so was a bit gunky, that and sixteen years and 126,000 miles or more.

Always liked Cayennes, though I did think it was an "Autocar Image" of a Porsche SUV where they just grafted a 911 front onto a Touareg, but then I realiised they were official pics biggrin

Hell of a machine, dont they have a few engine "challenges" ?

I think the early 4.5 V8s had bore score problems and the coolant pipes which ran in the V were made of plastic. When they failed, they dumped coolant all over the starter motor which is situated. The facelift 4.8 shouldn't (hopefully) have any of these problems.
