Slightly off topic there's a Rocketeer V6 MX5 on ebay ATM, £7k reserve.

Unfortunately it's both silver and a MK2

I saw that pop up on the Rocketeer group - I believe I'm right in saying the current Covid situation is to blame for having to sell up which is a real shame.

Thanks, it's beginning to get there. The jobs to do now are mainly cosmetic, so each one seems to bring big rewards as each change makes an obvious difference.

Gosh why would you bother with all that work and money on a Mk2?

Looks fantastic.

Can I ask what model is the Sony unit and how easy is it to wire up into the car?

Cheers

Because for many the mk2 is a better drive...

Improved rear suspension, stiffened shell, much more livable interior.

I've had both NA and NB MX5s as dailys, covered more than 30k in each.

If I were buying again, it'd be a NB for a daily, and a NA for an occasional use fun car.

My NB was a dream, the new owner has boosted the engine to over 400bhp for his track car. He also transferred all the suspension over, and it rides better than his E Class estate whilst handling like a scalded cat.

Thanks.

It's a Sony XAV-AX3005DB and very easy to wire up with a patch loom for an Mx5.

I quite like NBs. Personally I think most standard Mx5s look a bit weak, but with only a few little mods I like all generations of them.

NBs have there advantages for sure, though interestingly the Rocketeer kit uses NB suspension geometry for the replacement front suffrage.

I'm not surprised they use the NB front geo (and adding it to the rear is fairly straightforward with new top hats. It is an improvement over the NA.

Agreed on standard vs lightly modded (especially ride height - no need for slamming but making lower wishbones parallel to ground is perfect for both geo and looks). NC is always going to be the ugly duckling though! wink

The suspension and interior swap over wink

IMO 300bhp in an MX5 is too much, it ruins the fun factor, on a clear road I actually find NA best as you have to really drive it but how often do you find a clear road, more power gives more overtaking opportunities.

I really like the idea of a bone stock looking (ok, maybe slightly lower - I think they call it OEM+?) mk2 with the V6 conversion. I'm eyeing up my wife's Mk2 Jasper Conran as a project car but I'm not sure she'd appreciate it being off the road for a few months.

When she finally gets the C6 Corvette she's always wanted I'll be free to tinker.

I have a mk2 s.e. And would love to drop the V6 in however its got no abs and a standard diff which just add to the list of jobs which would need to be done.

None of my MX5s have had ABS and I've had loads of turbo / supercharged ones 240-275bhp an LSD costs around £250 and takes a few hours to swap - hardly an issue in the scheme of things

I thought I would post a small update as I haven't for quite a while now. The reason for no update has been that I have done nothing to it! Apart from drive it, but even that has been boring (for the thread at least) as nothing has gone wrong and I haven't driven anywhere very scenic...

However, I took it to work at the start of the week in the mist and fog, and managed to get a semi-interesting picture so thought I'd share it; mainly as an excuse to say all is well with it. So not an interesting update, but a pleasant one at least.

And again but in B&W, for extra art points!

How are you finding it? Has it lived up to or surpassed your expectations?

Good question...!

I'm very happy with it, which is saying something given that there was a period before the ECU swap that just looking at it depressed me. One of the aspects I'm most pleased with is its driveability. Even stone cold it starts first time and drives well. I have no idea what power figures it's making but it pulls well. It was making a rather poor 230bhp at the flywheel with the old ECU and was fairly hateful to drive too. My bum dyno says it's making a reasonable amount more power now but is also nice to drive - dare I say OEM-like? You can put it in 5th at 20mph and it will pull away smoothly (if not quickly) which isn't necessarily useful but I found impressive!

I've also got over listening for every little sound and feeling every slight vibration as a harbinger of total catastrophic failure. If someone else had done the work I wouldn't have been like that at all, but as it was me a certain paranoia set it at the beginning; but even that has passed.

So in summary, I'm very happy how its turned out. There's still lots more I want to do to the car as funds and time allow, but none of it really engine swap related.

Have you noticed any difference in the handling. Any change in terms of under steer or oversteer, roll etc?
