Have you thought about sourcing a German stubby mirror for the drivers side ? I remember hunting high and low for one when i had mine. Granted it limited the vision a little but all the small details count.
I get asked this a lot but I actually want to keep the original mirrors, it’s part of the Lupo ‘character’ For me, this is one of the best cars on PH. Built not bought. Around the roads around here (Derbyshire Peaks) I would choose this over something with a cavallino any day of the week.
Please never put a 1.8T on it. If you do ever fancy ‘more’ I suggest the 2.0 ABF. I had one on my mk2 (similar spec ethos as the Lupo) and with a lightened ‘Hotgolf’ flywheel and solid linkage on the 8v 020 gearbox it was a brilliant drivetrain. There is just something great about being to drive a car at 10/10 on a road without being a pillock on the road.

Agree with this, a fettled 1.8T would make it a perfect track car but after doing a few overtakes on the road, it would get frustrating having to look at your speedo all the time! Please never put a 1.8T on it. I arrived home last night from what can only be described as the best Nurburgring trip ever. It was my 5th time over there and it gets better and bettter, the weather was absolutely perfect the whole weekend. I covered 1060 fault free miles including 10 laps! One of those beating my previous PB of 8.49 with an 8.39
I'm sure some of you would have the seen my 'near miss' all over the Nurbrugring instagram and facebook pages lol. I'll leave the video link below if you haven't seen it. The issue was tyre pressures, I wasn't aware of how much you need to keep an eye on the pressures with Nankang AR1's. They raised waty more than I thought they would, I ended up being down to 22psi cold to be at the optimum pressure of 31psi. I was also slightly off line as I had an FK8 Type R behind me which put me under slight pressure. The front of the car just washed out and wouldn't grip. Safe to say I done well to hold it and come out of it with no damage, it knocked my front right camber out about a bit but with a bit of DIY later that evening I got it back to 'eye' perfect and the car felt great the next day.

Holy crap, loosing it into Brunchen and still hanging onto it despite being sideways. Well held!
I guess getting out there is still difficult what with Covid19. Went to Donington last week for a couple of runs.
It was definitely a st ya pamts moment! Getting out there is more or less completely normal now I guess getting out there is still difficult what with Covid19. Went to Donington last week for a couple of runs.
What a save must have been scary .
Did you put a wheel on the grass ?
I have done x 5 Nurburgring trips and still do not know 95 % of the track but it is such a mega place .

As above, looks like you caught the grass - is that correct?
I've got nothing to add to the technicalities of this great thread but just wanted to share my only experience of a quick Lupo:
I did a track day at Bruntingthorpe a fair few years ago - usual mix of supercars, track cars, off roaders. At the start they asked us which car we thought we'd like the most of the end of the day. Most plumped for the Ecurie Ecosse prepped Ferrari 355, Ariel Atom, Westfield, Monaro or similar. The lead instructor predicted what we'd go for.... Sure enough he was right - VW Lupo ! They'd bought a batch of ex German Touring Car racers and they were absolutely epic. The only FWD car on the day but by christ you just got quicker and quicker and quicker with them, so grippy & forgiving.

Yeah the front end washed out and just caught the grass, kept my foot in to lull the front end back round just enough!

Stumbled across this thread I was at the trackdays last thur and Fri...were you guys staying in Wimbach? Your car looks like a lot of fun and well done on that save in Brunnchen would have been a disaster to have crashed /damaged it so nice driving!
Yes mate that was us! What were you in? Yeah it really would of been a nightmare, bit luck and skill involved I’d say
I’ve been slacking with updates on this lately. I returned back from another Nürburgring trip last weekend, yes that’s twice in less than two months! Took the missus this time as she’s been dying to go, she’s now caught the ‘Ring bug’ lol. It was another great trip, car was pretty much faultless again other than a MAP sensor dying on me but thanks to one of my German friends who lives an hour away, kindly let me take his off his car to get mine running for the weekend! I only managed to do 4 laps as the weather was either too hot, raining or it was too busy.
I also got to go out in another good friends Lupo GTI ‘Ring tool’. He’s done over 400 laps in this car and it really has been setup well. The biggest difference over mine is the full cage and KW competition coilovers.
The next little project for me over the next few months is a whole new front end underneath. I’ve got spare wishbones and a subframe currently being powder coated. All new bushes and bolts have been bought. I’m have some custom made ball joints fabricated to improve the roll centre correction. Should make a nice difference. Oh and a new aluminium radiator
