So as mentioned I went to view one... What. A. Machine. I was very impressed with how solid it felt, and just so incredibly capable. This one had been re-mapped to 523bhp and it went like the starship enterprise!

It presented well - no scratches, bumps etc. A slight tear on the roof above the window but nothing that would put you off. I managed to give it some on a dual carriageway - that engine howl is intoxicating! Maybe it was the type of drive I went on, but I didn't feel the speed so much - just the surprise looking down at the speedo!

Whilst this one had a new clutch not long ago I'm still concerned about monster future bills, which is one of the only sticking points at the minute.

I'm still jumping between a Chimaera and M6 - it's driving my other half mad and I don't think I've ever been this indecisive...

Which ever I decide, it's a seriously impressive machine.

It certainly has all the ingredients to be a licence loser, that's for sure! And intoxicating is the word! So, re the car - did you get a feel for why it has languished so long on the forecourt? The mods? Price? Worries about lack of warranty?

Not sure why it’s been for sale for a while - apparently it sold once and the buyer cancelled the purchase due to marital issues or something. To me it’s a good buy for the money, and I have to say the guys selling it are seem genuine.

My plan is to keep my choice for a while (semi-investment) and I’d be worried that with one of these there is a monster bill around the corner, however they did offer an RAC warranty at cost (£900 for the year I think). On this car everything in my amateur opinion felt tight as a drum however.

One thing for me is it felt that it is so competent that I’d have to be really pushing it to feel it come alive, which as you say is mega licence losing territory!

At the moment I’m thinking I’ll just go for it, as nothing ventured, but that’ll be different in the morning when I’ve changed my mind again!

Apologies James for hijacking your thread thumbup

OMG - only just discovered this thread after having my M6 for nearly three years (and writing about it on PH a few months ago on Carpool). Really useful and illuminating read on a Sunday evening with some top tips and now got a list of things to go and check! I’ve had an amber EML for months but had a long chat to Paul at my garage of choice who looks after M cars and ran an E60 M5 himself. The fault code (must get myself one of those readers) is to do with the VANOS lift and he said nothing to be concerned about as he ran his car for several years and looks after several M5s with it! It does disappear for a while if I take it to the rev limit on the NY Moors to/from Whitby... I think these are criminally under-appreciated cars given their qualities and blisteringly quick if you grab them by the scruff of the necks. Next major trip is to the Spa Classic next month with some petrolhead mates (E46 M535i, Cobra and, er, an MG BGT, albeit breathed on).

Incidentally under the minor-&-irritating-but-deeply-pleasing-to-resolve category - when I replaced my battery, the memory setting for the steering column and the automatic lift of the wheel stopped working. Tried all sorts of things (new batteries in key fobs, setting it at various ignition states etc) but nothing worked. However, joy of joys, I came across a YouTube video that sorted it - push the steering column adjuster all the way to the top (with the steering wheel clearly responding as a result) and hold it there for 10 seconds once the wheel is as high as it will go then do the same going the other way holding for ten seconds as low as it will go and hey presto!

Keep up the posts - great to read and share.

Lovely car. I was very much of the opinion that these were a bit ugly and gawky when they were first released, but like many BMW’s of this era they’ve aged fantastically and now look really good.

I’ve only ever seen one out and about, going the other way to me and the chap gave it the beans and it sounded amazing. I’m not usually a fan of V10’s because I think they sound a bit harsh compared to a V8 or a V12, but I loved the noise that M6 made. These older N/A M cars make such glorious noises and really show up there modern counterparts.

Afternoon all!

I've been quiet of late as we bought a new house and that has been taking my focus. The new house is everything we wanted; ourtdoor space (bordering a golf course), good sized house and plenty of expansion room for my garage but it comes at a cost. It's a 20 mile commute each way to my office.

When I bought the M6 it was idea as my commute was 2 miles each way and I took the bus most of the time. Now i'm doing nearly 1k a month and it's not going to do the car any good, nor my bank balance with the petrol costs and that's aside from the fact I am now actually on first name terms with the lovely team at Shell.

For this reason and this reason only as I love this car I going to sell it and change to something equivalently entertaining but more frugal for the miles i'm doing. Choices so far are the latest A5 coupe with the 3.0TDi or the 640d Gran Coupe which is a bit like the M6 but with some more doors.

Anyway anyone interested in the M6 can get in touch with me here. I want £18k for it. Brand new MPS4S tyres all round, just done oil service and had rear diff oil changed at same time. Car is now on 25250 miles. I have it on the lower cost BMW warranty (£110/month iirc) which is transferrable.

Car is in Aberdeen ready to rock. I'll do a proper ad for it later today.

Thanks so much for a great read this thread has been.

I am close to buying an E63 M6 and it's rather daunting with everything I read about reliability and servicing. I wouldn't buy it without the BMW warranty but it still has me concerned about breakdowns and downtime if I end up with one with problems. I've read some people have endless issues with them and end up getting rid of them.

It would be a daily driver for me and as a Central London dweller that gives me some concern but I'm finding the pull of the M6 too hard to resist. The alternative is an F10 650i which on paper seems somewhat comparable but I just feel it will be ultimately not the same in comparison. I also just really love and prefer the E63 shape and design. I am on the hunt for a nice black model, preferably with black wheels.

Personally I really loved the Bangle era models. So directional in design and in retrospect despite the reactions at the time have become quite influential.

The thread has given me a things to consider and a really nicely balanced perspective of ownership. Thanks very much and I hope you will continue to update from time to time.

Congrats on the new house! I meant to drop you a note when I saw the For Sale sign up. I'll miss seeing what was probably the most interesting driveway on the street...

If you'd been selling the M6 about six months ago I'd have jumped at it! GLWS though. I'll pop you an email soon and hopefully catch up to shoot one of your other cars.

Thanks Niall,

Well we ended up selling in just 1 weeks which was pretty incredible. We got a house out in Banchory which is a town i've always loved.

If you're ever out then drop me a line. We're just over from the Tor Na Coille.

In the meantime the ad is now live. Thanks too to you, Niall, for the brilliant pics. smile

This has come up at a bad time, I am in the market for a well-maintained M6 soon, but in the middle of changing jobs currently...
If I had the stability, I would have jumped for yours!

Best of luck with the sale.

Thanks Alec.

I've had more interest already than I had suspected I would get so it may well be gone before too long.

I'm also eyeing up a tasty looking BMW 435d X-drive. Seems to do all I would want and delivers a lot of economy. Rear will be tighter for my son's car seat than the M6 though so i'll have to test fit in a 4 series just to be sure. I have the passenger seat forwards to avoid the imprint of little Converse trainers on the back of the seat as it is! biggrin

Are you sure you want the wallowy xdrive suspension?

If I'd have researched better I'd of gone for an sdrive 330d instead of what I have now.

Interesting comment and one that I wasn't aware of. My father has a 335d X drive estate of 2015 vintage and it seems fine. However I have been looking only at cars with adaptive suspension as it was something i really valued in the M6.
Also Aberdeenshire's roads aren't the greatest so a permanently firm setup can become tiresome.

I normally take this sort of stuff with a pinch of salt, however when I test drove a 335d, the one thing that I couldn’t help notice was how much it bobbed and wallowed, especially on a back road. It was quick, but quite disconcerting. The ACS springs are supposed to help, but I didn’t like it enough to take the risk.

I don’t often say this, but that price is giving it away. I expect to see it up with one of those types who over expose their photos on a white background for the same amount of pounds as it’s done miles, if not more...

Hi James,

I am considering the M6, it's a bit of a daunting purchase so not jumping otherwise I would snap yours up in a second and I wish you weren't offering it just yet!

I'm just wondering what you think re the back seat size. I have an 11 year old and a 7 year old do you think the back seat is too small for them? The legroom looks doable if the seats are pushed forward a little, do you think this is practical?

I would appreciate your opinion. smile

Thanks for the comment. I could have gone in at £20k and expect to be chipped down a fair amount so I decided to go at £18k and have the very strong argument of “find a better M6 for the money and I’ll reduce it”.

Hi there! Well I can absolutely recommend the M6 as a car to go for, it really is superb in both performance and usability.

As for the rear seats, I have had full adults in them but only for short journeys. I would say that it’s ideal for my son in his car seat and someone car sit in front of him easily but not necessarily as far back or reclined as they would usually want to be. The buckets are very buckety though so you may find they are supremely comfortable for a smaller human. It looks a very nice place to be although my wife feels it would be claustrophobic for her to sit there which is understandable

Great car James.

Certainly a V10 that I would love to have a go of myself.

Reading your thread though your fuel economy would scare the bejesus out of me hehe
