WONDERFUL!

Please ensure you keep using it. It's a pleasure to see old and rare - but formerly everyday cars - like this out and about.

I would be so tempted to crack out the back to black on that grille.

I think this picture captures the cockpit ambience well. When you get behind the wheel, your first and only thought is about driving. Not any 'in flight entertainment', climate control or other so called survival kit. You're not even thinking of arriving, just travelling. Cars like this one you DRIVE - and YOU drive.

This is the first car I've ever bought that I can honestly say I could never part with. It's irreplaceable.

Ah, but that's an upmarket 1.6, my Dad had the same (in red) in the even more basic 1.3 !

DDB 780Y if memory serves me right (learned to drive in that car) but I don't remember the grille being grey (maybe just a failing memory). It also had full wheel trims like these, but that may have been an upgrade from the "look the other way" parts bin at the Ford dealer he was a mechanic at:

You're quite correct. The 1.3 Base was as impoverished as they came, but they really are all deceased. The diffs were popular with the banger boys (I guess they're ideal for quick take off) and the only one I've ever seen is in Holland. I did recruit a friend of mine to negotiate on my behalf to buy the car and bring it back - but we couldn't get the guy to take us seriously. Why he'd struggle to believe that someone would fly 600 miles, buy a 35 year old car blind and then attempt to drive it home I have NO idea?!

Anyway, final photo from me tonight - and just for fun. I'm genuinely surprised that it's been so warmly received on here. Thanks.

Last year, FoMoCo gave me a Mustang for a few days and I couldn't resist photographing the two of them together. The 5.0 V8 is a truly fantastic engine, and the car as a whole package is very complete and tempting. My main observation about the Mustang is people don't hate you for having one; they just want to look at it and talk to you about it. Drive an equivalent like an M3 or C63 and you get called a wker and ignored.

Early enough to have No aero on the rear quarter windows!

There are some amazing and very desireable motors in the readers' cars section, but this one is by far my favourite in a long time.

Can you take a picture of the rear seats. I remember them having massive legroom. I travelled for thousands of miles in the back of a 1.6 base sierra when I was little. Lovely.

That looks positively high spec compared to my old 1989 mk 3 Fiesta Popular. It has two wing mirrors for a start! biglaugh

Very charming car this, reminds me of my old Renault 5 1.1 Campus. Looking forward to more update because they just don't make them like they used to!

Fantastic story OP - thanks for posting! thumbup

And such a rare car nowadays - I think most of them died on the ovals once the supply of Cortinas dried up!

Reminds me of when I was working for an insurance company back in the early 80s. Our Claims Department got allocated a pool car - a brand new Y-reg Escort Popular, complete with vinyl trim, rubber mats on the floor and only one door mirror on the driver's side! No heated rear screen or rear wiper! Seats didn't even recline!

I had a Granada 2.8 Ghia at the time and my boss had a 3 litre Capri Ghia - as ours were both autos we decided the clutch pedal on the Escort was only to be used to pull away or to stop without it stalling! laugh

I'd be thrilled if your Carlton turned up when I booked a mini cab! biglaugh

Thanks for the vote of confidence however from my perspective as a mini cab - a positive note at least the leather is an easy wipe clean surface - on the downside most people want a taxi to turn up and actually get them to the destination without reliance on RAC or AA biggrin
