1983 Ford Sierra BASE (Poverty/UN Spec)
Discussion
I'm not sure how much appetite there is for this old heap out there in the real world - and it's probably even less popular here on PH.
But I'm using it weekly now as a car (as nature intended). Last week it took me to work and back which revealed a number of things.
1. A small amount of water is getting in as my arse was wet after the 5 mile journey
2. I really need to flush the heater matrix so we can have some heat
3. The lights are terrible.
Still. What price sexual magnetism?

A shining ruby in a world of grey. But I'm using it weekly now as a car (as nature intended). Last week it took me to work and back which revealed a number of things.

Looks great there. But I'm using it weekly now as a car (as nature intended). Last week it took me to work and back which revealed a number of things.

These are the classics everyone wants but the prices have gone nuts.
Only the halo models have really leapt in price. You can still get in a running 5dr for circa £1,500. Unusual colours, good provenance and interesting specs will demand a bit more money - but you can definitely secure a decent one for a couple of week’s pay. This car’s a great example of why you can’t always afford the cheapest one. Initial outlay was £750, on top of that I’ve probably spent about £1500 on panels, paint and the cylinder head rebuild. It’s still likely worth £SFA. Whatever. That isn’t what it was about. When I took it on in 2016 I was confident it was the only grey grille RHD example remaining - now I’m absolutely certain. I don’t trust anyone (save for about two friends) not to try and improve* it, so remain it must.
Next year the clutch needs replacing (damaged by oil contamination) the rear bumper needs changing and I’ve got to flush that matrix.
Oh. And drive.

I had two Sierra co cars via, the god awful Pen co, in Slough that I had the deep misfortune to work for, from August 89 to Jan 1st 92.
The first was E97 JLO a black 1.8 ( from memory ) its previous ( sacked ) Rep driver had painted the badges and the bloody plastic wheels trims with gold marker pen !!! Which when I took the car over, was flaking off like mad, haha.
The second one H 273 ELH a red 1.6 LX was bought new. I repeatedly asked for a blue 1.8 L, but was ignored. The 1.6 wouldn't pull the bloody skin off of a rice puddin, it was absolutely gutless !! And it handled poorly.
The only nice thing about it, was the seats and it's spaciousness. Guessing these two bit the dust years ago.

Love this! As a child of the 80's we had quite a few family Sierras and gradually over the years they have become almost extinct. There is one (albeit the 'newer' model) fairly local to me which I see now and again. My dad had a brand new one in 1987 (E839 VWF) and in later years a few mates had them and drove them like hooligans Some real nostalgia there, I thank you!
Keep the posts coming, this has been one of my favourite posts ever on Pistonheads. As you say, there cant be many, if any, base Sierras left today. Look after the old girl!
I have an Orion (admittedly I'm living the dream with a 1.6i Ghia!), there is just something about driving in something that was so popular and has now disappeared from the roads.

Yes, great to see you’re keeping it going bornite I have an Orion (admittedly I'm living the dream with a 1.6i Ghia!), there is just something about driving in something that was so popular and has now disappeared from the roads.
It must be an extremely rare model Sierra now
Darren390 - not many Orion Ghias left now either. Bit of a conversation on them on this thread a week or so ago -> https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
