Anyway, they took my licence for 181kmh and fined me €135. I'm not allowed to drive in France for three months with immediate effect and I had to organise for a chauffeur to drive my daughter and I for the remainder of the journey.
Getting pulled for 181 and being fined is acceptable but a ban on the spot for three months is rather harsh imo. You have my sympathies. The only consolation is, this is a regular occurrence for French drivers too.
I suspect the chauffeuring business is good...

The overall stats

That fuel economy is very impressive. I'm just back from a trip of similar length in my 2007 E200K estate and the economy is barely any better. It did around 29mpg on a very interrupted trip from the Alps to Reims on Saturday (hours of traffic jams), but at a sustained 90mph from Reims to the tunnel on Sunday it was doing 23.5mpg (12L/100km). It has the 5-speed auto and is quite short geared with engine revs around 3400-3500rpm at that speed.

Well, it's a deterrent and with a couple of trips that'll have to involve something other than a trip with the Chunnel, quite possibly an effective one.

The chauffeurs confirmed that the chauffering business is good...

So you got 29mpg where the light footed Mrs Bolide got a return of 27.9mpg from Provence to Reims, which is an interesting comparison. I suppose when she drives -- seventh gear at 2,000ish revs is relatively economical in comparison to a smaller engine at higher revs?

From Reims to Calais at a sustained 80mph, we saw a much lower 25ish mpg (details on previous page), so once again, an interesting comparison both between our vehicles and considering that the NW route may be more uphill, leading to increased consumption.

Whereabouts did you encouter traffic jams? We experienced no such jams on Friday, other than for a momentary stretch in Lyon.

Saturday the jams are half-term traffic from the Alps - French and Brits returning home (and other French going the other way towards the mountains for their half term week) - crazily congested going from underneath Geneva to about Bourg-en-Bresse. A couple of other big pinch points around toll booths and junctions like one south of Reims where the A26/A4 junction goes down to 1 lane.

Phew! Just as well we've left on Friday AM for the last couple of years and enjoyed an overnighter in/around Reims.

Great read of your recent trip, and naughty naughty you - being told off by the PH police!

The shame of it!

The thing is, do I troll him back? hehe

The temptation is strong, but alas, life's too short...

I wouldn't be surprised if the misfire / stutter under load is the fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in 15 years, unless I'm reading your previous post wrong?

I had a Passat 2.0tdi which did the same and had all sorts of investigation carried out including removal of the turbo! Turned out to be the fuel filter!

Could be just a diesel thing, though.

Interesting... I'm not sure if I've mentioned this already but I had a discussion with my indy and ran through my list... he suggested that the fuel filter might be difficult as he tried to source one recently for another customer with a 211 E500 (presumably with the M113) and that some of the components were NLA. eek

Would the fuel filter cause an EML, however?

Good point about the EML - not sure, probably unlikely, but it's definitely worth a try! I guess a code read should narrow the EML down.

You can get pattern parts easily enough from most motor factors, 2 secs search on google returns Febi one for £22. Not sure where they're located on the E500 but diesel models its on top of engine and an easy DIY

Apparently it is quite tricky to access on the M113

That seems ridiculous that you can't get a fuel filter on a car that isn't actually that old? How often should it be changed?

As per the list above, every fifteen years or 150,000 miles.

If anyone has been inspired by obsessive titivation and consumption of fuel and parts, there is an opportunity to secure an interesting E500 which has popped up on ebay.

It is a rare colour and a designo interior -- in fact, I think that it's pretty much the exact colour combo from the launch brochure, though I'd have to check later. It has form heated/cooler seats and rear heated seats, in addition to being an avantgarde spec and at 90,000 miles is just at the stage where all components begin to perish and your Theseus' ship/Trigger's broom journey can begin in earnest.

A great timeless design IMO.

I agree, it's quite lovely, to my eyes (when clean).

I called my indy today to see whether any issue with the car had been identified. He said that it hadn't been looked at yet, but that it'd either be the MAF or the coil packs.

Talking about the coil packs, he said that it's generally the wires into them that gather condensation and gradually perish. So, hypothetically, older spark plugs would not lead to coil pack failure per se, but, the act of changing the sparks plugs would allow for the inspection of the wires.

So that's an argument for preventative maintenance, or in this case, sticking more closely to the service schedule.

Just read this from start to finish over the past few days and I have to say what a fantastic effort you've made bolidemichael to keep Magnus in such fine fettle. I've had a lot of estates over the years but never an E-Class, which is an itch I need to scratch at some point. Especially a larger engine variant. There's a lovely E63 5.5 biturbo at a local garage which is sadly well out of my price range, but if I hadn't just bought my wife a new car this might have been a good option smile
