Maybe get a lift in one for that!

M5 ownership a wallet busting experience but still hugely rewarding when everything working?

Ah definitely. The sound it makes is great, and I think it is quick enough now though. I know the F10 and F90 are quicker, and I can see the appeal, I think they maybe too quick. I reckon my car is capable of a sub 10 seconds to 100mph, and that the f series can do it in around 7 to 8 (especially when tuned), but I aren't sure I would ever use the cars to that ability. This car is making me really consider what I want from my next car now.

Having spoken with the guy who did the rod bearing work he doesnt think it is the SMG pump fluid as the drips are too far forward. It has now used 0.1l of oil after around 900 miles which is bloody good. It could be the Pas reservoir leaking or a Vanos line. He is going to come and take a look this week I think.

The guy who did the bearings is kindly coming to look at it on Thursday. He suspects a seal or crush washer so nothing serious.

Ordered some new spares today - 2 front brake discs, pad wear sensors, drive belts and oil filter. Nice big discount from Euro Car Parts. I don't need the discs, but at the discount offered it would have been mad to turn it down (53%).

I'll be using the drive belts and oil filter at the next service next month.

Well, the oil leak is imo reasonably bad. The below pic is after the car was run for a bit and then turned off. This is over around 24 hours of being stationary.

This pic is while it was running for 10 mins.

The guy who did the bearings came down yesterday to look, couldn't find the leak and was going to return today for another look and to put the car back together, as there are some under trays and covers removed now. Unfortunately he couldn't come back today due to something out of his control, but I don't know when he can come back so I am in limbo. I have a car I cannot use now and I'm a bit annoyed about it, especially as I need it next weekend. I am now hoping to get it booked in with a local garage who sorted my aircon for next week.

I'm losing interest in the car if I am being honest. I have had it for less than 3 months and for 1 month I havent been able to use it through no fault of my own. I am happy spending money on it for maintenance etc, but I loathe spending money to put things right that weren't caused by me, or by general failure. This isn't a typical s85 issue so I do not blame the car, but I am no longer enjoying the experience as I feel that it had been tarnished.

Sounds like your struggling a bit car wise at the moment, I had the same when I got the Renault only not to such a degree thankfully. It just seemed that for the first few months I couldn't drive it hard and enjoy its ability at all.

Started with brakes all round, then needed an exhaust, then because I upgraded the exhaust it made sense to have it mapped as is wasn't running quote right with the new pipes. Then I had to have quite a bit of unexpected suspension work done to pass mot, then tyres and now I've got to sort the front grill as I hit a pheasant doing north of 80mph and spark plugs to go in when I can be arsed. It's just never ending sometimes.

Just think when it's sorted go and find a Decent tunnel and bury the loud pedal, I promise it will all be worth while. I recommend hindhead.

Don't get disheartened; at the end of the day, you've got one of the last V10s and by far the best engine BMW ever made IMO

Get it fixed and learn to love it again, you know you won't regret it wink

It does become harder to love a car again if you begin to resent its constant need for attention and associated costs.

Cheers guys. I don't mind spending money on it, just spent £343 on parts for it at euros (brakes etc). It's the bad money. Money I shouldnt be spending because someone didn't do their job right.

I've enjoyed some seat time in an E61 M5, long road trips, euro trips, ring laps, and town driving.

You've done a lot to sort it out, and you're not far off having it tip top. I wouldn't quit now after all the work you've had done, when they're working well they are utterly sublime.

The experience of shifting gears with the SMG set to full attack (5) and DSC OFF is mental.

If it helps at all, I had an E66 730LD which was specced to oblivion. I cover a lot of miles, and had some rotten luck with it. I think I spent knocking on 6k in maintenance in 2.5 years of ownership, and I do a lot of the work myself.

In the end, I got sick and sold it.

The guy I sold it to has had no problems, and does trips back to poland in it regularly laugh

Don't fix all the issues for someone else!

My old one is for sale on PH now, I had 3-4 years of stress free motoring with it and the guy I sold it to has run it for a year and replaced the battery and one ABS sensor plus a service at Munich legends. If I could buy it back and still keep my F80 M3 I would.

As soon as I saw your pics and description of the M5 you had bought I had a feeling this was not going to be great. You would have been better off buying a better one for a few thousand more. The oil leak has got to be related to the sump being off surely. Did it leak before?
Phil Crouch is the best person for rod bearings on these.
This is going the same way as your E39 M5, agro!

This is not a dig but you make some bad decisions with M5’s!

I really hope you get it sorted and enjoy the car because they are great when working well.

Maybe you should buy an M car from BMW with a warranty and keep the warranty running and don’t fiddle with it lol! It might bring your stress levels down! Only joking!

Good luck mate and hope it’s just a simple fix and you have no more trouble with the M5.
At least your pleased with the FAMS tune!

Please persevere with it. It is an amazing car that few of us will get to experience.
Reading about yours is about as close close asni will get to one. So for purely selfish reasons, keep plugging away.

I guess I am just disappointed with recent events. The car was 100% before the bearings and it has been anything but since. I never had any concerns before. I feel like I am waiting for something else to go wrong. I didn't feel like that before either.

It makes sense. I need to reconnect with the car and see if it is still "there". My original plan was to keep for 2 to 3 years and move to an F10. All up in the air right now.

Up until this I hadn't had any worries or stress over the car. It had been performing 100%. I took it Paris where it didn't miss a beat.

What concerned you about it? It had full main dealer service history, lots of receipts, money spent on it with recent work. I booked it in with my local indy who went over it with a tune tooth comb and all they found was that the rear pads were getting low (now done), thrust arm bushes had play (now done) and the rear tyres were getting low (also now done). They told me that the car was very clean and in very good condition. I aren't sure what else I could have done to buy a good car? Yes I could have paid more and was prepared to, but I would still have had to pay out for rod bearings etc, and at that point I would have been getting close to F10 money.

cosworth330 said:

No it didn't. It was leak free according to my indy.

I bought agro with those two, this one was fine. I am sure that it will be once this issue is sorted.

The first one I agree, I rushed into it. The second one I bought from a member and had money spent on it. I knew of it for a long time before I bought it so when it started to cause me issues it was unexpected. My current car is the best M5 I have bought as far I am concerned with gold history.

Thanks. We will see how I feel about the car once it is all sorted again.

I would buy an F10 with a warranty from BMW auc if I had the money to buy one outright. I don't hate loans, but given that I am remortgaging in March next year, I large monthly going out each month isn't ideal. Plus having £30k of car sat on my driveway that I would only use at weekends, which might then only do 50 miles feels a bit pointless.

Cheers. The FAMS tune is good. The cold start delete makes the car run so much smoother from cold. I haven't really had much chance to explore the tune yet.

Hahaha, let's see how it goes after it's sorted. I need to re gel with the car again. I am hopeful it is sorted before the weekend so that I can take it for a thrash.
