I keep seeing cars and vans that appear to be cheap but they are located in Ireland - generally Southern.

What's the catch ?

Does exporting vehicles lose their HPi data ie are they likely to be clocked etc

Thanks

HPI only covers UK vehicles, so there's no data to lose. There may be an Irish equivalent, if you know their original RoI reg.

I'm in ROI..
The market often shifts.. a lot of time it can be cheaper for us to import a UK car than buy the equivalent car here, even allowing for our ridiculous import tax.
Can you give some examples of what you mean? Presumably at the lower value end of the market?

Sorry I was referring to importing UK cars, loosing the HPI / mileage then re importing

At the minute I'm seeing lots of VW T5 vans sub £10k approx £2k lower than UK price

There'd be far better countries to use than RoI, because of their high import tax.

But I'd have thought DVLA would give it back the original UK reg, and the VIN's unchanged, so it'd all tie up.

I thought there were no taxes as we're all in the EU

It's not VAT or duty, true - but there's a first reg fee. In the UK, it's only £55. In other countries, it's much much higher.

Irish government have cleverly disguised it as Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) due to the EU issue. Essentially an import tax on all vehicles new and used. Up to 36% of market value depending on Co2 emissions

If it's classed as a commercial vehicle then our VRT is a flat rate of a few hundred euro. Ie very little.
This could account for some of the issue. The fact that they are cheaper could be because our 2nd hand market isn't as large perhaps?

To be fair, buying a cheap 30 year old Esprit unseen from anywhere is a risk. Agree that particular seller is a dick. It doesn't mean all sellers in Ireland are dicks. Likewise, a seller from anywhere could be a dick

Be careful of specification differences - this is a common difference between ROI spec cars and UK spec cars. Also the vehicle will have an import marker on the V5C once registered in the UK which could impact residuals.

I couldn't help but post it under the circumstances, cheap Irish cars seen online, what could go wrong?

Haha, fair enough. It is quite fitting :-)

Sorry OP, to get back to your point, have you noticed that the majority of the examples you are looking at are cheaper in Ireland? Or just one or two particularly cheap examples?

Not being up on VWs, could this be a large engined model? The general market here can't understand larger engines and if it's large and petrol then even worse.
Do you know if they are taxed commercially or Not?
