I had a 2 litre for around 4 years. After a VX220 and a 350z it was my first attempt at a sensible family car! Lovely thing, that was mainly reliable apart from the auxiliary belt snapping and wrapping itself around the cambelt causing untold damage to the engine. Thankfully Mike, who runs the Avantime owners club (which you’ve hopefully found), took it off my hands and then spent the next couple of years getting it back on the road.

The aux belt snapping is unfortunately more common than it should be. I’d had the cam belt changed around a year prior by a guy who regarded himself as a specialist but never mentioned getting the aux belt done at the same time. OP, make sure you get yours checked unless you know it’s been done. And good luck, they really are fantastic things!

Well, so-so news so far! Coding the throttle body sorted the engine light and the car drives far smoother than before, however the electrical warning screen is still present and the car is still stuck in limp mode. More investigation required!

Oh no! Checked back for an update after remembering this, found nothing, checked if still on the road and it's not taxed.

Hopefully you've SORN'ed pending further fettling before getting it back on the road?

I had a good nose around the Avantime that Brooklands auctioned on Saturday - just bonkers and still lovely styling.

I was looking for an Avantime when my Citroen C6 was written off in December (yes, I must be some sort of masochist), but there weren't any around at the time.

Currently in an Alfa, but still on the lookout for a suitable C6, Avantime or, to a lesser extent, Vel Satis.

Hope yours gets sorted soon!

An awesome car. When the French Renault engineers went out and got smashed one Friday night and decided that they would enter the luxury market and then to save time, whilst still wasted on cheap wine they drew them out on the back of fag packets. The Avantime and Vel Satis.

Amazing cars, beautiful design and in another 20 years time we will be talking about them like we do the original mental Citroen DS!

I worked for Renault as a salesman when they came out, and we had to have a sectioned off part of the showroom and a specific "posh" person to sell them. Her name was Tracy Clewit-Green (wow, my own memory surprises me! I dont know what day it is, but I can remember a colleagues name from 2002)

I also remember driving the diesel Vel Satis for a month or so as a company car, and then having the Avantime for a weekend and filling the V6 petrol with diesel by mistake! eek

Amazing purchase. I salute you bow Hope its going well...

There is also one for £1900 - Cat N but damage appears visible - it needs a rear bumper apparently (who knows if damaged underneath) If it isn't and is properly cleaned up it could be a good project - given its rarity I doubt the Cat N would even matter!

hi Steve.

I found this article whilst browsing for a similar issue with my Avantime. Guess what it’s your Avantime! I m Currently parked up waiting for the AA, I’m sure you had a nightmare with it. I’ve broken down about three times to date. I assume you found no fix for it?

I had a Vel Satis for the best part of a decade.
I forgave it an awful lot because it only cost £4K and it had tons of character and wasn’t ‘the usual’.

Hello!

Bloody hell what are the odds of finding this! (well actually, considering how few they sold in the UK probably not that bad)

Sadly I never got round to fixing the issue, I left it with a Renault specialist in Newcastle for a few weeks but when even he failed to rectify the issue, I sold it to a guy on the Avantime Facebook page who had a few of them (not sure if that's you?)

Did you get sorted in the end?

Stephen.

It's the 2 litre turbo model, I'd have ideally liked a V6 but I couldn't be picky for the price I paid!

It's gone into the Renault specialist today, so fingers crossed. The garage owner drives a Vel Satis, so I think it's in good hands.
Any update? I keep seeing a purple V6 near me and I'm resisting the temptation to leave a 'Is it for sale?' note on it.
