I have a bolt-in safety devices cage, just a simple one that was included with the Shell. I’ll weld in some mounting plates but will see where my head is once the driving position is mocked up to decided whether or not to use it. I’m 6’4” and really don’t want to wear a helmet on the road
Think you may struggle, I had the same cage in mine, with a harness cage was just about ok without a helmet but I’m 5’10”! I also had the colour debate, all the period Ford colours are so good compared to modern stuff! I went Olympic Blue but kinda regretted not going Signal or Java green

Tough one!
With regard to the cage, I've sat in a couple of rally cars with very low mounted seats and it's seemed ok - i'll hopefully be able to make something work. I had a good look inside a grp4 car at the weekend and the (welded) cage was right up in the roof, very close to the shell, i'm not sure if the bolted cage will be the same??

I made a gearing calculator in Excel at wo9rk today.
Standard rocket ratios, 3.44 final drive, 225x45 r13
I wont be doing any motorway cruising in it, that's for sure!
4kRPM at 70mph isn't that bad, I've had a couple of cars geared that high and they were fine. Obviously you wouldn't do lands end to john o'groats in it, but a couple of hours weren't a bother.Standard rocket ratios, 3.44 final drive, 225x45 r13

Car looks great btw, like the emphasis on fun above everything else - who needs 5 speeds when you've got 4 really sweet ones?

I'm not worried about the gearing tbh, it will mainly be used on wee highlands roads and even if i take it to work now and again i'll go the twisty way
Tyre size isnt 100% decided yet and that will obviously affect the gearing. Big atlas, probably 8" on the front, 9" on the back to fill the arches.
The shell has been relieved (but not properly tubbed) for 15" wheels but i think id rather stick with 13's. Keeps the unsprung weight down too. And keeps the tyres cheap
A bit more inspiration for you... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSiG7oNXC6w
Love these cars, despite only driving one, once. Just so well proportioned, hugely adjustable.

Thanks, yes I’ve been watching that - fantastic work (and, I suspect, a fantastic budget!!)Love these cars, despite only driving one, once. Just so well proportioned, hugely adjustable.
Though personally I think it needs bubble arches...

Yeah if you lower the seat I’m sure that would help, mine was standard height. From memory the bolt in cage was a tight fit and was close to the roof. The main issue I had was that to be confident my head wouldn’t hit the cage meant having the harness really tight (as it should be!), and that really limits your movement for slow speed manoeuvres, parking, drive throughs etc. It was just a hassle in the end and wish I hadn’t bothered but totally understand why you’d want one especially in an arched car. This is the only pic I’ve got of the Olympic Blue Tough one!

Oh and Signal Green 77 all the way
Looks a good plan. I built an Hillman Avenger with a zetec running bike carbs, lsd, bilstein ect. It was one if not the first zetec converted Avengers. Wish I had kept it tbh.
Plenty of good rallying Escorts about to look for inspiration some of the den motorsport ones are amazing. Love Duffys Mull escorts that he has had over the years.

That Looks Great! Early grille too, awesome.
Gah. Colour is tricky, a you say, so many of the original colours are just so nice.
I do love this though:
Signal Orange is amazing on an Escort without a doubt! I was tempted but it seemed the most popular colour to go with so fancied something different. There’s no wrong answer though so long as it looks loud! If I ever get another it’s gonna be green though Gah. Colour is tricky, a you say, so many of the original colours are just so nice.
