We shall see.....

I think I will have the dent in the bonnet sorted but if something else estate-shaped comes up that takes my fancy I will sell.
And you’ll regret it like we’ve all done before haha laugh

Don’t get me wrong; I’ve been offered a few good amounts for my touring recently; but I’ve no idea what I’d replace it with, that’s why I’m hanging on to it. It’s just too versatile & not easily replaced...

I may not be saying this if I had the 530 or 540, and the 2.5 is very smooth but it just lacks that little bit of torque. I don't want a diesel.

540 Tourings seem to be reaching silly levels so they're probably out of reach for what I want to spend.

IIRC yours is out of my budget, Harry.

Haha that wasn't what I was angling at! A six cylinder 124 would be nice alongside the w140.

There's a chap on another forum that's just bought an S212 E500 and will probably be looking to sell his 2007 E500 5.5...

Sounds interesting but I suspect a bit pricey for me. Any details though or links?

My error, sorry - it's actually a saloon that he's looking to offload.

I have bought an E46 door mirror in the correct colour for the cover as it was cheaper than buying a new cover in primer and spraying it, and less hassle (£35). I think I will need a mirror assembly though as that is damaged.

In preparation for a campting trip this week I wanted to fix the lack of tunes from the CD changer. The CD changer powers up and acknowledges that it has 6 discs, but it won't play any tracks. Over at the E39 thread some suggestions, so I removed the cartridge, plugged it back in and it started playing. Happy days. I went to start the car and the click of a flat battery greeted me. Balls.

A neighbour pops out and says did I know that the hazard lights have been flashing a lot? No. Even with the solar charger plugged in, it's had enough. Balls again.

I've taken it out and put it in the footwell to see if it will charge enough and I'll check tomorrow. By happy coincidence the CL battery is the same type so I can always swap them over. Failing that, I'll take the CL.

A bit of internet digging suggests the hazards flashing could be the switch itself and/or the crash relay under the steering wheel.

Edit: or the bonnet alarm switch

After over a week on solar charge the battery will not show more than 9.5V so either the solar charger is not man enough and/or the battery is shot.

I CBA to buy a mains charger so I have ordered a Varta battery from ECP for £68

I've had a solar power charger for a few years; it's never worked on my E39s or E65; just not up to it IMO

Works superbly on the wifes Jazz; the battery's tiny though!

The CTEK MXS 5.0 is a superb trickle charger and I'd highly recommend it to anyone; £65 isn't a bad lay out either for something that'll last you a long time:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/CTEK-MXS-5-0-Reconditions...

Which battery did you get for your E39; they are quite sensitive to the batteries used; I'll only use the yacht sized batteries in mine; something like the Yuasa 019; Bosch S5 019 or S4 013:

They're as big as you can fit in the battery compartment and perfect for the E39s needs smile

Yes, the replacement is a bit smaller. In fact the clamp doesn't hold it top or bottom! Do I pad it out or take it back? Varta Blue 100 I think it is.

I fitted the bigger battery (95A/hr) and all good. Reset the clock, date etc. I spent £10 on a quick Romanian once over as it was filthy.

A quick road test and I have a coolant low warning. I will inspect it later as I have to go to the optician lunchtime. My eyesight is OK for that!

In other news I had a groan from the steering, checked the reservoir and it was empty. Odd as I can't see any leaks. I have topped up and will monitor.

If the coolant isn't low or there are no signs of leaks; your sensor is duff and it needs swapping out

It's at the bottom of the header tank and c£20 to buy new; a 5min job smile

If the coolant is low; top up ASAP and monitor; could be you've a slight weep from somewhere (generally the top of the rad plastic housing that cracks at the top hose join, or the T piece that's under the fan cowling. Can also split at the header tank end etc

When was the last time you did a PS fluid drain & refill? Might be worth doing that for peace of mind; an easy job to do DIY or an hours labour at your local indy etc
