Ok thanks. I have no idea what is a boot grabber and the internet just returns pictures of work boots.

A weather window today so another go. It helps greatly if one tries to loosen the belt using the tensioner and not the idler. Ahem

New pump in. I am not happy with the condition of the tensioner pulley. There is some slight play plus you can see the state of the bolt which releases the belt. It seems pretty crappy metal to me. I had to use a 16mm spark plug socket as the normal socket (new) wouldn't grip it. Yet another part to order.

The tensioner is here so hopefully a simple lunchtime job. As long as I do not break anything else, I can start to reassemble

Job done. A bit of a fiddle but fairly straightforward. Ran it up to check the radiator and as I expected it leaks so a new Nissen one ordered. With a bit of luck I should have it all back together by this weekend and then it's being sold.

You've not been in the barge thread for a bit then? Yes, a 530i to replace this. I am collecting Saturday assuming the wonderful UK rail network holds up.

Whilst the car is still in bits I decided now would be a good time to replace the oil filter housing gasket which I had ordered some time ago. I think it definitely needs it. Nothing went wrong today but I reached the point where I really need to clean off the oil deposits. I have ordered two crush washers for the VANOS oil line which will be here next week.

Airbox and alternator removed, the latter was obstinate.

I have no idea why coolant is there

It's definitely been bad a while

The old one is flat, brittle and currently stuck in there. I need to find something to hoof it out.

Once the crush washers are here I should have everything I need to reassemble the lot and have a sweet running car.

"Why does the CAR WIZARD hate BMW's?!? He explains exactly why on this 2001 325Ci" :

He says that BMW has put coolant thru alternators, in his mind totally unnecessary, and because of coolant gaskets ( which cost nothing) in alternators, you have big bills.

So, you have made your own manual of how to do all of the above on the new one now!

Is this one for sale? Half tempted wobble

A bit more progress but thwarted by a loss of radiator rubber mounts. The oil filter housing, alternator, PAS pump and belt are in place. I wouldn't be surprised if they're on the undertray somewhere. I had the radiator in but it was too loose really. More parts to order.

It's nearly back together. Just a connector to plug in which I think goes to the electric water pump but I gave up after 15 minutes struggling. I will have to try again. The solar charger failed to keep the battery charged so I bought a CTEK one. I tried, probably in error, a fast charge and it errored with 'cannot keep charge' so I am trying the recon setting.

The battery was new in August so I wonder if I can claim if it fails to charge?

Strange with the battery but I'd have thought you could claim if you maybe drive the car under its own power to the shop and say its playing up?

Do you mean the electric thermostat? I think these escaped the electric water pump entirely but there may be one near the back of the engine come to think of it.

It's a piece of harness joined to the same one that goes to the NS headlamp. It naturally drops down to the electric pump at the bottom of the cowl. Damned if I can clip it on but I can't see where else it could go.

The slow charge seems to have worked - no error this time and a green light.

At last I have it running. No leaks that I can see, I will check tomorrow when I top up the coolant. It's quite filthy so a trip to the Romanians to break the back of it and then I will clean up the rest. MoT booked for 2 June.

As I was letting it idle I moved the heater controls to max heat and very annoyingly the heater fan doesn't work now. I don't think it would be linked to the below.

I have one connector I cannot place on the nearside front. I thought it was the electric water pump but it's not that. All the headlamp bulbs are connected. Any ideas?

The plugs looks like it’s for the recirc sensor. Clipped onto the fan cowl on the E46, can’t remember on the E39.

Thanks. I wonder if I have left an old switch in the old rad or cowl? More digging required.

I cannot find where to connect that plug, if at all. The aux electric fan has also stopped working. Have I been unlucky and fried the hedgehog when I reconnected the battery?

Heater fan fuses 20 and 23 are OK.

fking car. More interweb searching.
