I'm afraid that bonnet will need a lot more attention than a rub down and fill, if that's all it's getting expect rust bubbles in less than 6 months.

I didn't expect there was many Beat's left in japan but looking at the auction i was wrong

Prices range from 300UKP for a real shed to 4000UKP for nice looker with a valid Shaken (車検) cheaper than the lowest S660

More prep work on the bonnet

Cam cover after a stint in Peters dishwasher and now just back from vapour cleaning.

Aircon pump removed and won't be going back on.

Bumper off and rear subframe and lower suspension arms look ok.

Shocks will be replaced.

Rear Bumper needs painting too, we are now contemplating a full respray.

Took of the passenger seat cover and put in the washing machine. Zebratastic.

If we do repaint whole car we will keep it silver I think.

quick update, still more snails !

First snapped bolt from engine mount, oops...

Car up nice and high to aid engine and suspension removal.

2nd small purchase but 1st thing to arrive and probably last to go on.

Side decals for the rear quater panel, my car was missing them.

I think you got a good price for one of these, they've never appealed to me as much as the Cappuccino or AZ-1, but I can see the appeal in them.

Kei Cars In The Park can help you out if you have any specific queries on anything, someone there will know the answer.

On the plates, you can run a Japanese size plate (13" x 6.5"), and they do look more "right" over a UK rectangle plate.

And just so we're not all repeating the same Chemical Brothers gag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrMsUrLWEwo

Engine and gearbox are out and looking a bit worse for wear.

Passenger side mirror needs fixing, gives Peter a chance to fire up the lathe and make an ali sleeve/collar, no idea what it will do but looks good hehe

I will be having a go at cleaning up rusty bits and repainting them. I've read good things about Por-15, unless anyone has anything better to suggest ?

Used to work with a chap who had a red one of these. Oddball choice, even back then, but certainly quirky and fun. Amazing how much space is inside actually, especially from what you first think looking outside-in as it were. Great project and looking forward to updates.

As for POR15, great stuff, just make sure you don’t get it on ya skin, hair etc. as it just doesn’t come off! Don’t ask me how I know......

Bilt-Hamber Deox-Gel is impressive for rust removal. If you can get the components in a bucket, Deox-C is more suitable.

They also do various primers (Etchweld & Electrox from memory), but I haven't tried those and couldn't say how they stack up to POR-15. If you search you'll find threads on here, detailing world and elsewhere with pictures.

POR15 is just the stuff for suspension parts like those. Made for the job.

It is excellent stuff, but do not get it on you, it takes weeks to come off! Ask me how I know...

When I did the front on my Elise I remember the gloves, when I did the back, I totally forgot about them and it took 2-3 weeks to get it off.

Thanks for replies will try the POR-15. In the meantime spent a few hours trying to remove pistons from the calipers in the end tried the grease gun method, messy but worked. As expected pistons are heavily pitted so will be replaced.

Meanwhile Peter has been properly busy with engine now taken apart and shows it definitely in need of some attention. Hardly surprising after 27 years. Off to local machine shop to see what needs to be done.

Wow, plus 83.5 PH points for dedication! Really enjoying reading your updates, it's a great little car and deserves saving.

Just about the only thing I'd do differently (I think), and I do like a Kei car, is to reinstate the AC. If you have big brass one and plan to drive everywhere, all-year-round with the roof down I guess it won't matter but I found in a less-small MR2 the only way to keep the cabin from misting up through the winter was to leave it running.

I have used vinegar for rust removal, submerging parts in a big bucket for 3-5 days and results are very good.

Haven't done any research on it but wondering whether you could transplant a bike engine and 'box into it. A 'blade engine'd Beat would be quite something.

Just had a look over lunch. Of course, people are swapping Hayabusa powertrain in there. Circa 200bhp. Nice.
