Superb!!! thumbup My newer Focus is about to go to 73,000!!!
Has it seen much use during the lock down? At one point during the worst of it I was down to about 400 miles a month, not many for me, and most of that was commuting.
Nah, it's only getting driven on Fridays and occasionally on a weekend, doing less than 250miles a month!!!

A couple of long trips planned for next month, in early September I've been invited to a memorial service in Kent for WW1 soldiers who were shot at dawn and my OH. and I have a trip to Ironbridge planned later in the month

Is it just me that finds doing odd jobs on cars like this strangely therapeutic?

I've had a mk2.5 1.8 petrol Focus for about 18 months now and love it but had recently had my head turned by the works salary sacrifice scheme on electric cars. Brand new car all inclusive of insurance, roadside assistance etc. for decent money. I'd bought a new pollen filter a few weeks ago and just got around to fitting it this week and whilst it's a bit of an annoying job and I ended up being myself into positions that I didn't think possible I absolutely know I'd miss doing my own maintenance if I did get rid of it. Also, as someone that doesn't commute by car and does only about 3000 miles a year it really didn't seem worth the expenditure when I've got a much cheaper car already on the drive that I do thoroghly enjoy driving.

Absolutely agree, when I bought the newer Focus I could easily have afforded a car around 3 years old but a) I don't like the newer version, b) it would end up being serviced at a garage to keep the service history up and c) I just enjoy doing stuff on the cars!!!

Just changed the drivers brake light bulb. I agree about doing little tinkering jobs being therapeutic, there's something satisfying about doing some work to your own car.

Enjoy your cheap bulbs! I agree working on these is therapeutic, until you hit a problem that you don't have the tool for, at 11 at night, and need the car the next day.

Talking of bulbs... Need two new rear light clusters on my smax. 361 each from Ford. Rethink is necessary.

How on earth do they justify changing that much? Or did Ford set the price by throwing darts at a board? rofl

I know this isn't a general Focus thread but it seems like a good place to ask. Do any of you have experience with the mk3 petrol engines? At some point I will upgrade this car and another Focus seems like a good choice. I have the 1.8 and it's decent without being particularly powerful but massively misses a 6th gear in my opinion. What are the 1.6 ti-vct and the Ecoboosts like to drive? Is the mk3 much better or worse than the mk2?

No direct personal experience of the Mk3 but one of my ex colleagues bought a 1.0 ecoboost and the engine blew up after a short time. The 1.0 ecoboost engine had a problem with a coolant hose breaking causing the cars to cook their engines. Ford designed a modified part which seems to have cured the problem. I do like the Mk3 but my choice with petrol would be the 1.6 or 1.5 ecoboost as personally feel the 1.0 would be underpowered. Hope this is of some help.

You're quite correct, a plastic coolant hose failed and dumped all the coolant out with catastrophic consequences, a redesign fixed it.
The 1.6 EcoBoost engine is very good, as is its replacement the 1.5 EcoBoost, the 1.0 does a credible job but make sure it's a later engine, so post 13 plate, the 1.6 can be found in some cars with 162bhp, service history is very important with these engines due to being fairly highly stressed and they run quite hot.

Thanks guy. I'd read about the coolant hose thing before but don't think it'd put me off so long as it's been fixed. I have always wondered how a 1.0 litre engine would feel in a car the size of a Focus. I would much prefer the 1.5 or 1.6 ecoboosts but they seem a lot rarer. I'm more of a fan of naturally aspirated to be honest so I'd also looked at 1.8 Civics and Mazda 3s. Still plenty of life left in the mk2 Focus though and it's by far the best car to drive that I've owned so may take some beating on that front!

I'll be honest and say that I don't personally like the mk3 Focus dash layout, how old is your mk2? You can find mk2's up to 10 and even 11 plate!!!

I do like the look of the mk3 I must say, especially the facelift ones. I'd have to drive a 1.0 ecoboost before I could ever make a decison on if I liked it though. I had a 1.2 TSI Seat Ibiza on lease before my Focus and didn't really think much of it. Mine is a mk2.5 2008. About 97k on the clock now but I do so few miles that if I kept it for another year it'd probably only just tick over the 100k mark. It does like a drink of oil and was producing a misfire code at one point but I've since changed the spark plugs and it seems to have sorted it. I think the 1.8 is known to like a drink of oil. I think it might be a rocker cover gasket issue as there was some oil in a couple of the spark plug wells when I changed them. I have the gasket but have never gotten around to changing it yet.

I have seen a few 61 reg ones but they will be cars that were sat around a while before being registered

Nice ride up to Whitby today, there's some nice driving roads over the North Yorkshire Moors. Unfortunately it got attacked by a pheasant on the trip back, as far as I can see there's no damage though so it's Focus 1 Pheasant 0.
