This pulled up next to me whilst at Halfords. Perhaps a good lesson in how less is more.

Edit - upside down picture, great

Danke.

I “fixed” a rattle from the exhaust heat shield by shoving a jubilee clip between it and a coolant pipe mount. I don’t suppose anyone knows where you can buy new ones?

Leaking hub seal, fixed. Or at least it appears to be. I bought a second hand half shaft (old one pictured below). This also appears to have improved the wobble at 65 MPH! It is nearly gone now.

I have found the part number for the heat shield. Not cheap for what it is, so it can wait for now.

Happy motoring.

Never a dull moment.

I'd noticed a "hot" smell when parking up (heat has a smell?!).

A little press on the radiator....

Not what you need. I've put some Sugru on it (sets into plastic), which is doing the job for now.

I've ordered:

- Radiator
- Thermostat
- AC drier
- AC condenser

As the rad comes out to sort the AC, may as well do it all. For reference, from Rimmer Bros, that lot is £320 inc. next day delivery.

I'd also noticed some moisture to the carpets inside. I think this is from when I installed the new pollen filters. The seals weren't in the best shape and can let rain water in (moisture noticed after heavy rain). My plenum filter has sat waiting for ages to be fitted, so why not do it at the same time. There isn't a lot left of the old one!

I used clear silicone around the filter covers, plus around all the windscreen cowl screws. We shall see!

I've had the bodywork priced up, but this will push that back a bit now.

My Laguna has been on track and did really well. Might set up another readers' thread for it.

Great thread on the P38.

I've also got a P38 but it's a non runner at the moment, I paid £160 for it from a guy who was just willing to take scrap value for it, it's a HSE 4.6 V8 in Cobar Blue. It's got a nasty drinking habit on the NS bank. I thought it was head gaskets but after fitting new HG with skimmed heads, it was still using coolant. I suspect liner issue, something you don't have to worry about with yours.

Good luck with it, a lot of car for the money as has been said and starting to become more interesting to us odd folk who love land rovers.

£160 is awesome. I’d love a bit of V8 in my life.

Moving on...

The radiator and other bits were calling. I got cracking.

Look at that 90's goodness.

AC belt needed a change.

As we were there, thermostat change.

New condenser, rad and drier.

Old and new rad.

The condenser was totally borked.

What a beast.

Unfortunately, after putting it all together, the aftermarket part from Rimmer Bros was leaking due to a crack in the lower plastic! I visited the next day, shadowing a neighbour who was traversing Lincolnshire. They had one P38 rad in stock, reduced in price, just for me. Unfortunately....

It was a manual car radiator (integrated oil cooler). No good!

Their showroom...

Yes, lots of catch pans beneath!

All seems okay now, after fitting another radiator from elsewhere. I'll see how an air con regas goes. I didn't change the drier, i'll let someone else change that before the regas as it is something of a faff to fit.

Modern RR to P38 comparison:

Happy driving!

New acceleration video. Make sure you’ve got the time to watch it, it takes a while.

Time for a picture update. The car has crossed 130,000 miles. Some recent pics, next to a Disco in Dartford.

and during a village treasure hunt (4th out of 10... not too bad). Certainly useful for bumping up kerbs and turning around in field entrances when trying to find clues!

I've continued in the quest to sort various issues. I had some bad luck (or maybe it was malicious...), but whilst on a date to a country pub, I noticed the car wasn't driving right. Front tyre was very low and I'd damaged the sidewall whilst driving on it. Luckily, a crappy pump makes up part of of my emergency kit. It did the job to get me home, just about....

I decided to have both fronts replaced. The tyre that was fitted is no longer in production in my size, so I specified two Michelin Latitude Cross tyres at £260 for the pair. This has had the added benefit of further reducing wobble at speed and also noise.

I also got around to changing the ABS accumulator, so the pump doesn't run at every brake pedal press. This is an easy swap and a more wallet friendly £120.

I also changed the gearbox oil and filter in an attempt to sort my (lack of) torque converter lockup (it only locks up a few times during a journey, then won't do it).

I bought another set of Rhino ramps, allowing the car to drive up all four at once. Nice and easy.

The oil change has improved shift quality, but doesn't appear to have helped my lockup issue. Not sure what can be done other than speaking to a gearbox specialist. I will drop the oil again soon, as you only get half out when removing the pan.

I REALLY have to take the dash out and get the matrix o-rings sorted, as the leak is quite bad. That's the next job!

What's the lock up issue, my first one went from 3rd to 4th then locking up after a pause (almost like a 3 1/2 gear in between). Apparently it was gearbox ECU related.

It only does it a few times and then doesn’t. Almost like once it is too hot it won’t engage. Quite frustrating on longer journeys.

Stop the press, leaky matrix o-ring fix!

The leak was getting very bad, so I found some time and an assistant to help. We managed it in 8 hours, against a book time of 12. Not bad, albeit with two people. We even removed the last of the phone kit rubbish.

Dash and other bits removed.

The connection that leaks

Brittle old o-ring vs new.

Some of phone kit parts that were removed.

Finish!

I've left the glovebox off as that has required a fix since I bought the car, so now would be a good opportunity. Next step is to dry the carpet!

I'm interested in your views of the Rhino ramps. I have a Merc GL so similar weight to your RR. I need some wide ramps and the Rhinos appear perfect on the surface but the number of reviews on Amazon from people who have had them collapse has rather put me off. But there aren't any real alternatives. The traditional metal ones are too narrow and many of those don't look adequately braced to me.

Interesting. I hadn't seen the negative reviews, but I've just had a look now. The two pairs I have are designed differently, but are the same dimensions. I've not noticed any issues with them after a few years of enthusiasts' use of the first set, but I will check them out for cracks, next time.
