Such a disappointing end to a cracking story. Hopefully the insurers give you a suitable value for it, and Essex police sort out the moron that caused this.

I hate driving in Essex. Seems to have the highest proportion of downright daft drivers anywhere in the British Isles.

Well, st, that is a lot more damage than I expected, if between the impact and the procon ten side of things it's properly tweaked the shell, yes, I completely understand you deciding to call time on it.

Nothing to add other than I share the sadness of other posters here. As a serving police officer, if you're not getting any joy with Essex, keep on at them. You having the evidence of the offence should make them take it seriously. Complain if you have to but make sure the guilty party is investigated and hopefully prosecuted.

RIP lovely Audi 80 and I'm glad you're uninjured.

Hi Folks.

An update. frown

The ProCon Ten system has tensioned, distorting the firewall. Not enough to visibly move the steering wheel, but definitely engaged.

We took the wheels off to have a look and discovered: Damaged wishbone, damaged subframe, broken droplink, broken engine mount, broken caliper, broken disk (never seen that before!) broken driveshaft, bent damper and lots of damage to the inner wing (outer wing looks curiously ok by comparison).

Turning the engine over is fine, but engaging the clutch with wheels off the ground makes a ghastly noise from gearbox/diff and no movement of driveshafts on either side. Only have two forward gears.

It seems the impact went almost straight through the centre line of the wheel. The right side drive shaft is an inch further into the diff than it should be and the diff/gearbox has taken a major shunt.

Rear axle is also trashed. The left rear wheel (untouched in collision) is about an inch outside the wheelarch and the mounting points underneath are sheered and broken. Right wheel is pushed inwards by a similar amount. Drivers door shows small but noticeable deformation to the shell of the car.

It's game over I'm afraid.

Drew.
A real shame after all your work & effort: to the end, though, it did its job, keeping you & your family safe, that's a great advert for a car of its age. Wish you well with the insurance claim, & thanks for sharing your experiences.

Gosh, that's such a pity Drew. Definitely game over on that basis.
Thanks for sharing the journey!

A pic which shows the scale of the impact that the car withstood.

In the boot was my walking stick. It's wooden with a brass telescope embedded in the top, in three screw sections. It was assembled at the time, but broken by the impact. Discovered it this morning when I emptied the boot.

Thanks for all the comments folks. I will be pushing Essex police to deal with this individual, so thanks for the suggestions there. I do have perfectly clear dashcam footage of those last few moments.

As for the car. I will be speaking to the insurers tomorrow to see what they say about a settlement. I will probably take it as I'd rather see the car off in one piece and remember it as it was.

Felt bad enough just taking my bits and pieces out of it today, including the stereo and dashcam wiring. We've also taken out the 3 VDO gauges, and they will live on in my son's Mk2 Golf.

I sort of feel I saved it and it saved me in return. I imagine a lot of you will appreciate this (though some may think I'm a bit odd in the head). Felt I had to give it one last clean as a sort of thank you. So I did. Damned if I'm going to let this awesome car go to its end without looking the best it can.

It's resting now, its job done. Thanks L835JCF and farewell.

Just a minor thought - worth seeing if the Audi dealership that were so helpful would want it as an apprentice project? Might not be viable if the procon 10 has fired, but you never know.

That is so sad after all your work. Glad you are ok - they are strong cars. My wife still wishes she had hers.

It's a VW dealership only now, no longer VAG unfortunately. I will let them know.

Cheers,

Drew.

Aw that's proper crap. I had read (maybe even on this thread) that Procen 10 activation is pretty terminal, probably why these are such a rare sight. And hoping the hit and runner driver gets his (or her) dues!

Gutted, that’s a lot more damage than first meets the eye. Well done the old barge for keeping you safe. If I’m ever to be in another accident, there’s few cars I’d rather be in than a big Audi. Have to remember this is an early-mid 90s car, it’s got 10 years on my A6 and has stood up rather well from an occupant’s POV.

A few bits...

With the help of my son we managed to siphon the half tank of fuel remaining out of the Audi (filled the Golf up completely - so that's £40 saved!). Anti-siphon valve was bypassed in time honoured fashion by using the return pipe to drain the fuel out. I've pinched the battery too as that was relatively new earlier this year.

Insurance salvage folks are coming to look at the car and take it away for assessment. Police have been in touch having reviewed footage. Their phrase was "Fully support prosecution of the driver."

Let's hope so. A quick look online seems to suggest he can expect 5-10 points and a fine.

Cheers,

Drew.

Such a shame, I hope the scum quickly gets caught and severely done.

With regard to scrapping it or NOT, surely there would be someone willing to take this on and get the old girl shipshape and dandy once again?

But as has been discussed earlier on in this thread, the Procon 10 may be the decider. Many of these Audi's went prematurely to the scrapper for relatively minor shunts due to the P10, and the consequences of it, being so expensive to repair.

Gutted.

Glad to hear the police have reviewed it and support you too, if nothing else it would be good to hear what happens to that driver now.
