Can I ask who your insurers were?
Admiral. I've always found their customer service and speed good. They don't do modified cars, but with daily stuff I've always found them quick and efficient.

Cheers,

Drew.

Another update as of this morning.

Essex police back in touch to advise that they have identified the driver and there is "sufficient evidence available to support prosecuting the driver of the vehicle for the offence of Careless Driving" - presumably as well as failing to stop.

Cheers,

Drew.

Glad the police have acted on this, and are intending to prosecute. Never nice when someone hits you and just pisses off. Hopefully they get a decent penalty for it.

I think £2k is a very fair payout for the car.

Good news on both counts. Fingers crossed the driver gets a hefty penalty at court and well done Admiral for doing right by you and the Audi.

Folks,

Just another little twist to the story of this old Audi and a happy one at that. smile

I was contacted out of the blue by another Audi 80 owner who'd come across this thread. They have a similar car, but with the TDI engine. A very polite series of emails was exchanged and the subject of the original rubber mats from my Audi came up. The TDI owner had been after a set for two years, but had been unable to find any, or persuade anyone who did have some to part with them.

As luck would have it, I'd taken my set out of the Audi before it was taken away to the breakers. I'd put them in my recently acquired mk2 Golf GTI 16v in lieu of having anywhere else to put them.

I told the other owner that he could have them at postage cost, but he would have none of it and has paid for me to buy a replacement set of original mats for the GTI and a generous donation on top for my troubles. Much appreciated and a touching reminder of how wonderful the 'classic car community' can be at times.

To cut the story short, the mats are now on their way northwards, and will soon take up residence in another Audi 80 of exactly the same age. It gives me a warm feeling to know that, not only did the car save my life, brought a bit of joy and some great memories to all who came across it, but also that various parts of it will live on in other cars.

Vorsprung durch technik, and all that. smile

Cheers,

Drew.

Lovely thread and a very apt ending.

I recently found a few pictures of my Dad's old 80, 2.8 v6 Quattro, RAMAIR induction kit, balanced bottom end (as needed new pistons due to a disintegrating spark plug) and straight through from the cat back....

I've only just seen this thread and was happily reading it from the start, only to reach the bitter end feeling empty. Such a wonderful story. I sincerely hope the git for want of a better word, got a severe punishment.

So pleased you created some happy memories, and took the time to share them with everyone on here. Thank you.

And here they are! From the south of England to the north of Scotland. Thanks to Drew for keeping this Audi 80 owner happy and allowing a small part of L835 JCF to live on in another car of the same vintage. Thank you for this wonderful thread and taking us with you on a journey through the highs and lows with a great modern classic.

What a great thread to read.

Gutted to hear about the car though in the end.

Not the outcome to this thread that I imagined, I hadn't checked the thread for a while. The Audi held up so well in the accident though, visually it didn't look like more than a parking scrape in the first photo. At least it got a 2nd chance at life before the accident, it's just a shame that you didn't have much time to enjoy it before some cowardly, talentless moron did that and ended the fun.

I hope that the Police have managed to identify the driver and they prosecute them.

Another well kept survivor.
