Audi 80 Saved from the scrapheap...

Love the idea of an RS2 saloon. A proper sleeper! Beautiful car - are those headlamps from the Cabrio/S2? Are they an easy swap?
I wouldn't say no to foglamps either, but that either looks like a bumper change or removing and changing some of the trim on the front. Not sure.
The larger alloys look great on your car. I'll admit that's the only bit of the visuals of the 80 that look a bit out of place to me. 15" alloys on such a big car look distinctly undernourished. The tyres will need a change before too long, so I'll have to decide then.
I rather fancied a set of the Cabriolet 17" Boleros but it would probably be cheaper to buy a cabriolet whole rather than source a second hand set of the right fitment!
I've encountered a bit of the orange goo in the door cards already when I swapped out the dead OE speakers. Nasty stuff, not going there again if I can help it. Fortunately the headlining appears to be sound, at least for now. I'll leave it undisturbed!
I'll check into the ignition barrel, would be good for peace of mind, don't fancy the electrics cutting out on a cold winters night!

Great save, fair play to you sir! I had a similar era 100 - a J Reg 2.0E. Even to this day (and I'm still in Audi's - an A6 3.0TDi Avant these days!!), I still vividly remember the sheer solidity of it. Granted, the engine wouldn't have pulled the skin off a rice pudding, but it was never that type of car - it was just a great looking, great driving tank of a car, just exuded so much class (mine was all black with some lovely understated alloys). I was still young at the time - only in my 20's, and I remember when they changed the name from '100' to 'A6', I ripped the badge off my bootlid and told people then it was an A6: The fact that it was all black, meant that you didn't notice it didn't have the updated plastics of the re-badged A6 - the vanity of youth!! Haha!! Cars like that will never be worth anything monetarily, but as a great looking, safe, reliable and comfortable method of transport - there's very little to beat it. Top work!

My parents had one of the first, 1987 1.8S-90hp carb and no pas! It was once driven into by a much newer A6. A6 lots of damage.
It pushed the rear bumper a little wonky on the 80. I removed it, unbolted the sturdy bumper iron and hammered it straight. Sorted.

It was a tank and I drove it to the moon and back without any issues. Though local thieves kept breaking in to steal the Blaupunkt stereo. 0 o 60 in 14.6 seconds if I remembered correctly.

Just a small update today. Sourced a replacement leather gaiter for the gearchange... even that was secured by screws.
Popped in a new stereo too. Nothing too fancy, but a Pioneer 'digital only' system (not even a CD!). The MVH-S110UB > https://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/mvh-s110ub
The only weird thing about this was that the Audi doesn't appear to have a switched live feed, so there's no way to turn the stereo on and off with the ignition. Unfortunately the stereo is designed to work like this and doesn't have an 'off' mode using the switches! I have to take the removable facia off to stop it playing. MIght see if I can run a line a some point. The ISO connectors are present and unbutchered, but there's just no wire there. I had to hotwire it into the permanent live to get it to work.
I've replaced the original paper speakers (they had all rotted, hence not working!) and the original Sony Stereo seems to have a blown channel alas. I'll keep it in a box as part of the history though.
The new Pioneer was chosen with three criteria. A bit of power (4x50w), a USB slot and red illumination to match the dash. Looks fairly innocuous in there. It takes up to a 32 gigabyte usb stick, so I found a very small one on Amazon and loaded it up with mp3s. Works well! Managed to get it on offer too, just over £30!
Speakers were replaced with Alpine coaxils. SXE 1325 S in the back and SXE 1025 s on the dashboard. All seems to work quite well.
Removing the rear door trims was quite an exercise though! Don't make 'em like that any more - a lot of screws!
Thermostat is on order for next week.
Cheers,
Drew.

These are great cars and yours looks like it will serve you well with the history.
I picked up a similar 1.6 SE a number of years back, similar story needing an MOT. Paid £80 for it and one lower wishbone later it was on the road. We liked it so much we bought another 1.9 TDi Avant and moved the Saloon on:
In 2017 I wanted a convertible for a few months and went back to what we know with this, didn't keep it long but it was again a great car - if with a few more issues given the roof was missing!

I believe I'm right in saying that all this era of VAG cars had stereos switched on/off by CANBUS rather than by a simple switched live. I think you'll need a CANBUS adaptor (or a bodge!)https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
I've got an itch to change my daily and was all set to go for this but I'll need ULEZ compliance so it's not for me. Shame!

Loved these and that era of Audi in general. Can’t bloody stand them now..............
There's a few of us, then.A guy to whom I used to sub-contract had a whole string of them and eventually a 2.8 Coupe. His client borrowed it and was very surprised, believeing it every bit as good as his own W124.
Hugely interesting thread and a great save!
I've even learned a great tip about sticking your box socket on an appropriately-sized suspension bolt, so you don't waste half your life wondering where you've inadvertently kicked it!
We had an L-reg 2.0E until the year before last. Had it for about 18 years. (Had a single point 2.0 before - that was an Audi engine I think, whereas the multi-point was the same as in the contemporary Golf GTI) Really solid. At 120,000 miles the clutch failed and we decided it was time to go. Sold it on and hopefully still in use. It had Procon-ten which is ideal for my wife because in many cars she sits too close to the airbag (otherwise she can't depress the clutch enough). Big boot, big fuel tank, so could get well over 500 miles on a good run.
Great save OP - will follow with interest.

Still does 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds.
