Sounds like a good trip.

How did the M5 fare on track?

A friend and I were talking about trying to get to the ring next summer. It won’t happen but it’d be fun to say that I’ve done it.
You should do it, i really wish i had come sooner. The M5 was superb on track, tight round corners, felt light(ish) and of course lot's of power out of corners.

My friends 4wd S3 was a little quicker tbh, a lot more planted round corners although the brakes got a little spongy after a few laps apparently.

Update with the E60 M5. Dropped it off at the independant garage i use for an inspection II and to investigate the rattle that had started on my drive back from the ring. I had guessed a top mount.

Unfortunately, it's a leaking front shock absorber, priced at a reasonable £720 + VAT from the dealer. Total bill for it's séjour at the garage is a whisker under £2k. I'm looking forward to getting it back this eve, it's next 'big' outing will be heading down to Goodwood onJuly 5th.

Next on my list of things to do is to get the E34 over to my lock up and attend to the leaking radiator and if i'm lucky, replace the squealing blower motor. I've also got my Dad's old Peugeot 406 that i need to do something with. He stopped driving in Jan so i parked it up at the garage and SORN'd it, i'd like the space back but it's just not worth anything, despite only having 75k on it.

Finally, after the Ring trip, i'm keen to get back on a track, so want to pull the MX5 out of the mud patch it's been sat in for a year and look at how bad the rust is.

Lot's to do!

Quite possibly, but given i'd like to sell this on at some point i've decided to keep all the servicing & parts top notch

Kudos to you OP for running an E60 M5. I had an E34 M5 a while back and it was a great car but some of the costs became tiresome in the end.

I also agree with some of the earlier posts that this car will be a cult car one day. Hard to look past the V10 smile I usually keep an eye on the E60 m5 threads and most people tend to spend a fortune on up-keep!!

Keep up the good work.

Did a few trackdays in my old E60 M5, never really had any problems apart from being heavy so tyres and brakes used to wear a lot.
The reason I sold after about 4 years was one I wanted a change but also I found you needed to be doing silly speeds to really enjoy it. Once you start winding it right out that’s where the fun is. Full beans in 3rd and 4th sounded and felt so good but the speeds you had to do to get that enjoyment!
I went from E60 M5 to F80 M3 just over 2 years ago and found the M3 felt much more enjoyable at speeds up to 70-80 and feels quite a bit quicker to a ton but I’m sure the M5 felt quicker from a ton onwards, might be wrong but the V10 was mad at a ton plus, just crazy.

Epic cars those E60 M5’s. Enjoy it.

Just got back from 10 days in France with the M5.

Had a villa with 16 friends & a few kids down near Avignon, so drove down to Lyon for a night. Love staying in the old town, it's really a beautiful place.

We then had a week in the villa, some of the local roads are really good for a drive, any of them around Vacqueras are highly recommended, lovely tarmac, camber in the corners and light traffic.

The car performed faultlessly, even in temps of up to 40 degrees (thank god for the ventilated seats). I've done the drive a few times in my previous cars (E39's etc) i have to say doing this kind of mileage in the M5 has been an absolute pleasure, even my wife found it comfortable and the long stints felt less tiring.

On the way back, which coincided with my wife and i's 2 year wedding anniversary, we stoppped a night at Chateau de Bagnols near Lyon. It's a beautful 11th Century castle, beautiful rooms and really good michelin starred restaurant, so highly recommend!

In local news, i've got the E34's MOT due next week, its rad remains a little leaky. I called BMW and they'd like £530 + VAT for one, which stings a little. Considering doing the water pump while i'm at it, Thermostat i did just after i bought the car. It will also need a proper service and the valves adjusting so will book that in post MOT, provided it passes of course, had a little trouble with high emissions last year...

I think I saw you asking in one of the FB groups about rads... IIRC BMW was the general census of opinion.

Put the E34 in for an MOT on Monday. Slightly dubious as every year it fails on emissions, and every year i put some Redex in it, take it for a spin and it passes... However it passed with an advisory for the suspension arm ball joint arm dust cover perished.

Really glad it's got through and i've got a fresh burst of energy to continue tidying it up, although the emissions issue is enough of a concern that i'll look at changing or refurbing the injectors or buying some new ones. Not sure who would refurb them so open to any idea's. Regardless of this, the car still runs fine, starts on the button etc

I've also been in touch with Chris from the Polishing Company East Anglia about cleaning the silver leather as it has 30 years of grime built up that needs a little professional attention. Plus of course i've now got the headlining draped over my head when driving so will have that taken care of too.

I drove it back to its lock up from Brentford yesterday evening and really enjoyed the drive, i've only put around 500miles on it since last year so intend to try and use it more.

It's also due a service so will get that done in September sometime.

Finally with a rejig of the cars at the lock up, for the first time in 2 years i was finally able to get our shared track car into the garage for a well needed inspection, it's really really rusty so need to make a group decision about what to do. It's been a fantastic car and taken many a thrashing but need to make a decision on if it's still safe to use. More updates to come.

I recently used Mr Injector to refurb the injectors on my Alfa. One injector was too far gone to salvage but he had one suitable in stock and that was matched to the other three. Cost about £110 to refurb the three original injectors and to supply and match the replacement. Turnaround was about 3 days IIRC.

Fair enough but i'm in SW London so that's a fair schlep for me and i'm time poor. I've been using Boxer motor works in Feltham for a few years and they're decent...

Cheers, will give them a call, BMW seem to want £150 per injector so this should be a better first step.

Just had a car based weekend with my wife hoisting some friends so a chance for me to do my own thing.

Began the day at BMW Thames Ditton collecting some >£1000 of parts for the E34, including a radiator, water pump, some hoses, front pads etc. Parked up behind a LHD M5 that was in superb condition.

From there cut across to view a car near Southend. It's an M635csi although not in great condition having been stood for several years and needs significant investment.

Given it was my first time in the county of Essex, i had arranged to meet a friend who lives there, we met on the A1060 near Chelmsford and had a decent blat through the countryside towards the M11. He's got a GLE 450 which is a brilliant car, but a little too big for my tastes.

From there, got back to Surrey in time to start a few jobs on the E34. First up is the blower motor, which has been squealing since i bought the car. Quite easy to do other than getting it out of the slot. I held off buying the motor until i had the part number in my hand as i understand there are a few different ones it could be. Will order up a new one, no idea how i'll get it to fit back in the gap. The cavity was full of spores from a birch tree the car used to live under, but i was pleased to see there's no rot anywhere that i can see along the bulkhead.

I also took the opportunity in the fading light to whip out the injectors, in the hope of improving the CO2 readings for future MOT's. Having spoken to Steve at 'Mr Injector' will be sending them off to him this week for a refurb.

At a wedding abroad this weekend so further updates in Sept.

E34 M5 Update.

Blower motor now replaced and whirring silently once again. Cost of the motor plus anciliary clips and screws was around £350 from BMW.

Following some advice from here i removed and sent the Injectors off to Mr Injector. He's just posted them back so will hopefully fit back on the weekend. I also have the radiator and water pump to do but i've misplaced my 32mm spanner so until i can locate that that job is on hold. I'd love to finish it all this weekend and attend the Munich Legends gathering on the 11th if i can.

I popped into the Sunday Service at BMW HQ in Farnham this weekend. Great metal on show and enjoyed the M1, E30 M3's especially. Took some great photos but my usual site Tinypic.com is no longer accepting any uploads. Does anyone have any recommendations?

First time I’ve seen your thread - unsurprisingly I love your fleet, especially the E34. Do you miss the E39? I cycle to work most of the time but otherwise my ‘daily’ is an E39 530i Sport Touring. Compared to the new 3 series I looked at on Sunday it feels so well built - doors are twice the weight and shut with a much more reassuring thud I am also not bothered about having the latest tech in a car (except Bluetooth) so it suits me perfectly.

Funny that you replaced the blower motor in your M5 recently - mine obviously came out in sympathy with it. I’ve not pulled it out yet but the plastic cover is stamped Behr so I presume that’s the one to order from BMW. RealOEM indicates it will be about £300?

Thanks! Tbh no don't miss the E39 at all compared to the E60 and i really loved my E39 (and the E39's i had before that one!). Agreed, not a huge amount of the newer stuff appeals, although i suppose i could get an F10 if my arm was twisted and i badly needed the boot space. I found the E39 was just getting a little tired / rusty, how's yours looking underneath?

re the Blower motor, it cost £300 excluding VAT but on the E34 you need to remove the wiper arms and associated trim so need to budget for all the broken plastic clips + the 5 rusty 7mm bolts on the covering panel too. I had heard there were several iterations of the motor so removed it and took it to BMW, but they only seemed to have one on the system for a AC equipped car, which was indeed, a Behr,

Yes to be fair I wouldn’t mind trying an F10 Touring (F11?) - one of their last good looking cars to my eyes. Rust-wise mine passes the 6’ test, but if you look really closely there is the beginning of some bubbling at the bottom of a couple of the doors and around the rear hatch glass. Sills are pretty solid and the guy I brought it from four years ago spent a lot on it so it’s been reliable and not needed much. MOT next week so fingers crossed.

There is only one Behr blower motor listed for the U.K. E28 M5 but at least I will be able save some money by fitting it myself, and the wipers don’t need to come off. One of the 7mm screws looks like a bugger to get to though!

Mixed weekend.

Started Saturday by refitting the injectors having had them refurbed. All went smoothly and drama free, other than losing one of the tiny clips that hold the injector electrical plug to the loom.

Then began on the radiator. For someone whose owned and done this smae job on numerous E34's and E39's it's all pretty straightforwards. I'll amid i spent quite some time on the power steering cooler that slots into the bottom of the rad, wasn't sure if it was attached tot he rad and undoing the two large nuts on the pipes was a pain.

Once out it was clear the rad has seen better days, bowing at the bottom and leaking in several places. took the opportunity to change the top and bottom rad hoses for fresh ones while it was out. I'd been repeatedly warned about how hard these are to bleed, but i found it ok and it's nicely bled.

Taking it for a test drive i've then noticed it is running slightly roughly until 2k rpm, revving higher than that clears it a little. Spent ages working round all the connections and things i might have disturbed but can't solve it for the life of me. Given it's due an inspection II i'm sending it off to my indi this week to let them try and solve it and do a thorough service and shim pads at the same time.

Slightly sorry that i won't have it for the ML gathering this week, but will take the E60 instead.

Took the time to roll the MX5 over the mechanic pit to examine the underneath, it is well and truly rusted. Sitting in the drivers seat i can see daylight along the floor edge running along the sill too which is bad news. Given it's co-owned by 4 of us , we discussed and agreed it's time to let her go. The GCF fabrications roll cage is worth more than the test of the car probably.

Bought tickets to the Bicester Sunday Scramble too for Oct 6th, hoping for one final run out this year in the E34.
