Just in the way of an update on the M5.
As some of you may remember this was a panic buy as my wife went into labour. As my son turns 2 years old next month so does the 2 years of my ownership The car is one of many and therefore does not see any commuter miles. I have an F31 335d X Drive for that.
I do approximately 1-2k miles a year .... yes i know shoot me. My E46 M3 also covers approximately the same mileage annually. M3 is currently with Mr Vanos for Rod Bearings, Inspection 2 & Diff Seals - I should start a thread on that too.
In the time that i've owned the M5 I can hand on heart say I'm totally in love with it. Just knowing that I own it is enough. Wife thinks I have issues - i'm beginning to think I do too. In a straight line it has the legs on the M3 but around the bends it does show its weight compared to driving the M3. Both are unique in their own way and irreplaceable.
In the UK we do get a lot of cloud and rain so the roads are mostly damp all year round. The E39 M5 performs surprisingly well around the B roads. Change of direction is great and the rear loves to spin - DSC is permanently off when i'm out on a spirited drive as I find the traction control way too aggressive. It finds any excuse to cut power to the rear wheels. The Michelin PS4 tyre have transformed the car - I thoroughly recommend these tyres.
Just before Christmas the M5 had its Inspection 2 service with Noel Butler @ NCB AutoKraft - the BMW master technician responsible for maintaining my M3 and M5. I buy my own parts from Harry Fairbairn BMW (Kirkcadly ). Their customer service is simply fantastic and Stuart & Adam provide the most competitive prices around from all the BMW main dealers I have tried in the UK so please do check them out if you're UK based. I produce a written checklist of the service items and Noel ticks off each item as he works his way through the service list. Legend he is.
The inspection 2 included ..
Engine oil
Oil filter
Sump plug
Differential oil
Diff fill plug
Diff drain plug
Transmission oil
Transmission fill plug
Fuel filter
Brake fluid
Spark plugs
Air filter
Cabin filter
Need to start thinking about rod bearings & timing chain tensioners. Car is currently on 104k miles
Last month I sent the car off to Noel again to have my continued steering wheel wobble inspected. It only seemed to appear when the disks got hot. After closer inspection he was able to find the root cause. Sticky calliper! The wobble is well and truly gone whether I choose to stop from 30mph or 165mph! Both Calipers have now been refurbished and I cannot stress how much fun I am having in this car now when I do finally get to drive it. I think the next job would be to give it a stage 2 polish before it goes into dry heated storage.
I can't stop myself from PistonHeads, Ebay & Autotrader classified and looking for M cars such as Z3M Coupe, E36 M3's & E34 M5's. I do feel another M car is imminent. Wife doesn't know yet ..... Here's a cheeky pictures of the Aegean,
Some interior shots ..
Some shots of it absolutely filthy ..

We inspected it on a ramp and rejected it. What a shame as the colour combo was lovely.
OP, do you find that the PS4 are quite pressure sensitive? I put some on my estate and went for a spirited drive - multiple steering inputs required on-line and they weren't stable under changes of direction... fully loaded and with pressures to suit... they are stable as you like in all weather conditions up to about 130mph!
I've never had the issue you've described. OP, do you find that the PS4 are quite pressure sensitive? Sounds like you may need a 4 wheel alignment? Or maybe your tyres have worn unevenly due to alignment. I'd find someone competent and who uses a Hunter machine. Please do let me know how you get on
Thread Update,
Putting the M5 away for winter didn’t last long. I found myself going back and forth just to look at it – I’m weird like that … only with the M5 though. Tax’d and bought it back home only to find that I’m getting some light use out of it. Taking my son to the park and running the odd short essential trip. Had the front tyres changed today .. Michelin PS4’s to match the rear axle. Wheels are looking a bit tired – they’ll be sent off to be refurbed back to shadow chrome in the next week or two. Rod bearings booked with Mr Vanos for end of May.

Thanks guys.
The wheels are looking a bit tired now with corrosion. I always felt the wheels look a touch lighter than what they should from factory. Lepsons are excellent, nothing but great reviews all the time. If was closer I’d definitely use them.
I had a company in mind - they are very local to me and have done a friends E39 M5 to an excellent shadow chrome finish.

Quite a long overdue update. I still own the car and there aren’t any plans to ever sell it. Wheels have been refurbed to shadow chrome. Gave it a quick clean today with the helping hand from my 3 year old son. Yes, he’s three years old now and so is the time I’ve owned the M5.
