It's only just balanced for now and hopefully it'll be mapped any day so will have proper graphs. I'll be happy with anything around 160'ish to be honest and then I'll look at some head work and cams next spring. The good thing with M44 is they're cheap enough and plentiful, so I'll pick up another head to be flowed and keep using as it is whilst I save for some Schrick.
Well the final power figure was 177bhp and I'm pretty content with that. Once Spring 2021 rolls around I will hopefully be able to have the head fettled by BDS, up the compression, fit some lumpy cams and get closer to the 200bhp goal I originally set myself.

The suspension geometry is booked in for tomorrow and hopefully I can get a first drive this weekend, assuming the weather holds?
The only other immediate tasks are the connecting of the new auxiliary gauges and sorting the interior. I've got a pair of period Safety Devices harnesses and a leather bucket seat to go in. I also want to fit a rear cage. I also opted to fit a pair of Cibié Oscar up front as the headlights are woeful and Cornish lanes get bloody dark this time of year.
Hopefully there might be a Sunday Service soon?

185/60 Yokohama and a nice new LSD with sintered clutch pack.
I was out with the dogs earlier and peace and quiet was interrupted by the fruity sound of induction noise. Then, through the distant gap in the trees, I spotted the unmistakable sight of a silver 02 passing by. My 02! It was out on its first proper road test and shakedown since mapping last week.
I've been looking at the gear ratios in the Z3 gearbox as the 02 is running a 4:1 final drive and 185/60x13's, whereas the Z3 final drive was 3:45 I believe? I seem to recall the Z3 ran 15'' wheels, or possibly 16, so I guess I could run E30 wheels if needs be? The steels actually look quite nice and resemble period Compagnolo from a distance.
Old meets new with the DTA standalone management. I still have a whole load of little jobs to do, like fitting the carpets, cleaning all the dust out, painting the dead pedal black, fitting the Race Tech gauges, period BF Torino leather race seat (that's a bit more generous in width), original Safety Devices harnesses, 3 spoke wheel and basically just make it a nicer place to sit. I find myself wanting to fit a period style rear cage too.
I know it's subjective but I really like the way the BWA alloys look.
Hopefully this weekend might see me finally get behind the wheel again? I still have the period race seat and 3 spoke wheel to go in.

Well I spent an hour sorting the return on the throttle pedal after work...
Unfortunately the OE rev counter couldn't cope, so I ended up fitting something a little more modern...
Hopefully the sun will still be shining tomorrow and I can wash off the past 16 months worth of workshop grime prior to my first drive proper.

Well best laid plans and all that.
The ignition switch, or more specifically the tumblers in the barrel itself, have started playing up and I couldn't get the key to turn. I did consider just doing away with the OE switch and fitting a remote starter but eventually decided against that idea. I'll just have to search for a used replacement. Meanwhile, I can use it 'as is' but just have to remember not to remove the key!
The new fuel pump also failed and Demon Tweeks have mailed a replacement which should be here tomorrow. As I'm at work all week now I am hoping for some autumn sunshine next weekend. Well dry weather anyway! Evidently patience is a virtue.

As the 02 has been sat in a nice dry workshop for nigh on 16 months I figured I should probably take advantage of it being ripe for some underseal to protect the rust free sills and floor pan. A thorough inspection turned up a single 50 pence size patch of soft metal so it was chopped out and a new bit let in. An hour with a wire brush and a flapper wheel got it ready to be sealed from the elements once again.
I also managed to come up trumps with some E21 323i rear trailing arms. As a result the 02 will now get discs on the rear. I just need to clean them up and paint them prior to all new bushes, discs and E30 callipers.

The LSD is in and I opted to have the whole diff rebuilt rather than risk one of the bearings (one of which was already a bit noisy) failing later on. As I have probably mentioned before, pretty much every mechanical component of this car was either shot or so tired that it would most likely throw in the towel quite soon. Had I actually viewed the thing in person (prior to purchasing) I would have sought out a better alternative. Anyway, lesson learned and wallet considerably lighter as a consequence.
At least I will eventually have something pretty special. Well to me anyway. I had a LHD 1802 when I was just 26 years old and that sense of nostalgia and being taken back to that time is what makes this worthwhile for me.
The E21 rear trailing arms were a lucky find as E21 parts prices have got silly nowadays and the 323i stuff in particular is hard to find. These now mean I can run discs on the rear, although I intend using E30 callipers as they're a bit cheaper and easier to source. There's also a better choice of pads available. I did think of going with Compbrake vented up front but the stock 02 brakes are actually pretty good when in good condition. I also want to stay on 13'' rims and so there's not a huge amount of room.
Anyway, next task involves underseal and cavity wax.

That'll be a long drive for Mark Unfortunately I think this one is too soon for the #bmw16v02 as there is still some fettling to be done. The floor hinged throttle pedal mechanism needs new plastic bushings (on order) and there's an oil weep from the pressure sender unit - I think? I also need to put a few local miles on it first and I'm still trying to raise the final chunk for the bill. As is the way with these things, my original budget was blown ages ago!
Well the throttle pedal is still proving to be a bit of a pain in the arse so I have had to strip out the floor mounted pedal box and replace the numerous plastic bushes and return spring. Quite how they can justify nigh on £30 for a tiny bit of plastic is beyond me but hopefully it'll do the trick? I'm also putting a new return spring on the bulkhead although I don't want the pedal to be too stiff.
The new washer on the oil pressure sender appears to have cured the leak. I hope so anyway, as the timing chain covers are notorious for leaking if the gaskets aren't 100% perfect, or so I am told anyway. Replacing those will mean stripping out a lot stuff to do the job again but I don't want any leaks having spent out refreshing the M44.
Under the title of ''annoyingly expensive and aggravating jobs that I'm trying to put off for now'' is the need for a new ignition switch and a boot lock. Ideally I'd like new but they're bloody expensive and even if I can find used, I run the risk of them being as knackered as the ones I have. I must admit, I would like the idea of new locks but I was thinking of using a quick release steering wheel, as I did on my old E30 M3. I figured it would be harder to pinch if you couldn't steer the thing.
I've also been looking at potential road trips next year. I'd really love to take the 02 down into Spain or Italy. When I was a mere 22 year old I took my '62 Zephyr 6 Executive (4 speed manual column change) to the Costa Brava. It never broke down once and people were amazed to see that I'd taken it all that way. It was such an adventure and I have great memories of that time and my ex who went with me.
My '62 Zephyr.
I want to disguise the chequer plate foot rest by painting it black too. I hate chequer plate in cars for some reason.
The 02 back in Greece.
I'm still undecided about the spotlights but realistically the stock headlights are abysmal so need all the help they can get.
I need to sort insurance soon, as my old insurers didn't like the engine swap.
