My First AMG - ridiculously excited !!
Discussion
So I just called for an update on the repair only to be told they are writing the car off as a Cat N ? (That didn't make sense as there's definitely structural damage !)
Currently repair costs stand at just over 7K but they think there may be damage to the diff as well.
They will take no account of any mods (like the carbon interior, splitter etc) so I'll get mkt value for a std car, which doesn't seem very fair..esp as they were all declared.
To say I'm gutted is an understatement.

Surprised this has been written off for 7k of repair.
Our Mini Cooper S was in a nudge 3 years ago. None fault. Admiral were great. The cause of the accident was also with Admiral. We were given our choice of repairers. It went to Chartwell Derby which I was amazed about. Total bill was 4.5k for a car we paid 7k for a few months before. Glass had it at 8k. It was new front and rear bumpers. Rad and IC. Full blow over being such a small car. It came out as new. It was also dealt with very quickly. We were away for two weeks only a few weeks after the accident and it was done in that time.
Push for it.

So I found out the reason behind them writing the car off, they value it at 12K according to their guide, so 7K estimated repair costs would make it uneconomic to repair.
Problem is, you cannot buy an SLK55 with 40K mileage on it for 12K, they simply don't exist.
So I've pushed back now. To be fair the guy from Admiral understood my point that, through no fault of my own I'm hit and not only don't have a car but am seriously out of pocket to boot, which doesn;t seem very equitable.
I suggested they take a look at the cars currently for sale and he did admit that the cheapest is at least 15K, but with mileage approaching 60K not mine with 40K on it.
So, they've commisioned an independent assessor to look at the car and also to come up with a fair market value for it. I'm hoping that they value the car significantly more than the 12K they have suggested and with the increased value, making it then economic to repair.
All in all, I just want to be made whole again either with my car back (#1 preference) or not being out of pocket and able to replace my car with one of similar age and mileage (but then this will be a bit of an unknown car without all the work I had done on mine).
Seriously pissed off with the whole thing now...but hopeful I may get a positive result.

I feel your pain.
Our 171 200 was written off a couple of years and the to'ing and fro'ing with the other person's insurance company (Admiral) was an even in itself. It's sad to say but you need to keep hassling them and persuade them to put you back in pre accident form with facts and figures. I ended up buying the car back from them and made a £'s that way as I wasn't going to put it back on the road bearing in mind this was done from a low speed impact with an Audi A4. The Audi looked fine.
This why ours was written off:

Rarely happens in my experience. I got driven into a few years ago, other driver admitted fault and Admiral valued my car at way below market price. I'd just spent loads on it, it was low mileage and there were no others for sale with similar miles, age and condition.
I had an absolute battle but they did eventually increase the value to the point that I could pay £300 for a 'contract repair' so being as I just wanted my car back I did it.
All the very best of luck OP, it's a lovely car and I hope you can get it sorted out.

The purpose of insurance. To put you back in the exact position you were in before the incident happened. So a 40k car, in excellent condition, with excellent service history.
Agree with all that but it’s not 40k. Far from it, I have an R172 model so newer model that I paid £25k last year. Op car is £18k ish Edited by Mr lestat on Wednesday 26th February 17:02

I think he may have been referring to the mileage rather than the value of the car. Edited by Mr lestat on Wednesday 26th February 17:02
Sorry to hear that mate. Defo push back on the insurance valuation, they would expect you to anyway. I had a third party claim last year on a 3k car and the repairs came to 2k. They happily carried it out without batting an eyelid rather than writing it off. If you can get the right money for the car then no doubt you can buy another one to suit your requirements. Just a shame about all the work you've had done...

When I was searching for mine last Summer, I kept a log of all the cars for sale across Autotrader and the like. Plotting mileage against price gave me this scatter chart:
I can send you the file if you want - I've not updated since I bought mine though...
Yeah that would be great, thanks !I can send you the file if you want - I've not updated since I bought mine though...
