From carwow on the E61 M5 vs a 440i.
I saw. That M5 was poorly.
Did seem a strange result, 500 bhp plays 370 ish, can understand 4wd vs RWD off the line but in the in gear races it should have pulled away.

Progress is one thing, gearbox, awd etc but that didnt add up, only seemed to get a glimpse of its potential in one of the races. And what was that pogoing business on gear changes ?

The in gear was interesting & clearly takes the sequential change issue out of play. The 440i was winning these with the exception of wasn’t it 2nd gear start at 60mph and only then and beyond could the M5 start to stretch its legs - but (who does this) and if you do then even at 130mph your hardly ahead by much.

Did sound epic though.

It recorded a 13.5 second 1/4 mile that doesn’t sound fast / actually does that doesn’t sound like it’s hitting stock? So was the driver giving it everything (as it wasn’t the drivers car) worn tyres? Greasy conditions. In need of a service /maintenance

I think it was from 50mph up, which given the 2nd gear on the M5 goes to 70mph, everyone who understands the way that the M5 delivers its power would be in 2nd gear not 3rd. When the correct gear is used, the M5 was faster, although as pointed out it did not seem to be healthy. I wonder if it was left in 400hp mode or if the gearbox was in the wrong setting, as in mine the SMG rams the gears home violently at 8k+ rpm, but doesn't lurch.

An ABS fault could cause the car to be limited to P400 as well. An ABS sensor fault caused an issue on someones car who I know who's car wouldn't be in P500 mode, despite showing. Resolving the ABS issue sorted the power issue.

Is that 70mph at rev limit/red line?

I’ve not driven my C63 for a while now especially when I’ve glanced at the mph per 1,000rpm but then again I don’t rev it beyond 4-5k but be interesting to know how they compare (max speed per gear).

Well 3rd upwards is well over 100mph and it’s brutal enough for me, it’s the torque that I love in this engine. Also I doubt I’d be taking my eyes off the road if nailing 2nd all the way.

But valid point - I guess all previous cars I’ve had I’ve really driven them frequently out to the red line this one (test drive aside not at all or not from memeory)

Appreciate that it is difficult to do these days, but it is a bit of waste. I have the same issue at times, but when I am on longer drives out I always get the revs up, gets the best from the car. Until you've experienced the kick at around 6k revs from the V10 you don't know what you're missing biggrin

6000rpm to 8400rpm is still my favourite memory of my E92 M3 as well for sure. thumbup

Below 6000rpm not so much though! hehe

It felt like you were waiting for it to pick up forever under 6000rpm in the M3, but I know that the V10 doesn't suffer from that though because it has more torque. driving

I’d still have an ill E61 over the 440! hehe

That particular car did seem pretty unhappy though.

I'll take 'how often does a major problem arises in an E60 M5' for 10 please wink

Will keeping the SMG box on the E60 M5 really hold its maximum value vs buying the stick shift box used in the US?

It's a £4k conversion. There has been a few done in the UK and one of the cars sold. It sold for standard SMG M5 money.

Not much going on, had a trip out to Caffeine and Machine last weekend with a group of other V10 owners, and then a detour to Diddly Squat Farm on the way back.

I wouldn't mind, zero warning signs, just happened while I was cruising at 70mph.

It'll get fixed then sold. I've fallen out of love with the car now.
