Something might have over heated. I'm going to plug ISTA in when I get home later. Car is en route via recovery as I don't trust it.

Thing is, I went to Bournemouth in scorching heat on Saturday and Oxford in scoring heat yesterday. Today on the motorway it throws the red cog of death while cruising. So what over heated?

Hmmmmm. Not good.

Hopefully you’ll be able to get it fixed for not too much cash and moved on relatively quickly (assuming that you really have had enough of it now).

It's possible that one of the SMG relays has gotten too hot. It's common on the e46 M3 SMG i am told.

As it is now engaging gears it can't be anything serious mechanical.

Car is going now though, I want a change.

This has been a long time coming........................but totally understand the enough is enough now. Most of us would've given up a long, long time ago.

Tbh the car has been any worse than any other car I have owned post rebuild, but I'm just at that point now. I've had it 3 years, time for change.

Now, do I go F10 M5, E63 BiTurbo or something cheap?

You have had pretty awful luck with this car.

Real shame as they are seriously cool.

Sorry to hear of another problem. I think that you a definitely right to part with it now. Just seeing your post gave me that ‘right I’ve had enough now’ feeling that I get with mine sometimes and it’s not even my car.

XFR next?

Is the SMG as problematic as the e46? Saw an M5 leave a pub we were at last night and that v10 did sound sublime.

It could be something relatively simple. I wouldn’t ditch the car yet - seen a few cars by the side of the road in recent days. In these temperatures you will find faults that otherwise went unnoticed. Modern turbo M5’s aren’t fault free for sure. As an only car (unless it’s a Lexus) you have to expect to off problem.

Been watching the thread, about your trepidations, seems like the logical to conclusion

I'm not really a Jag man, plus the 5.0 suffers timing chain issues which feels a bit like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

They are, but even coolness has a limit!

It's a logical step. I'd consider the F80 M3 but out of my budget.

It's less problematic, but still expensive when it goes wrong.

I've read the codes - It looks like it's the PLCD sensor (clutch position sensor) or a solenoid. I am trying to get a sensor at the moment, hoping it isn't the solenoid, as the sensor is much cheaper.

100% F10 M5's aren't fault free, but they have less to go wrong with the gearbox lol.

Yeah, I've had enough I think. Thing is, I know when I sell it I will miss it and regret it, and whoever buys it is likely to have trouble free motoring on account that everything that can break has been fixed, but it's gotten painful fixing it.

Thinking left-field, how about an S65 AMG next if you can get hold of one, or an S600 biturbo and map it?

If I were you I’d probably ask the mods to close this and remove/hide it when you advertise it!

I'm not sure why it is an issue? It is well known in M5 circles about its issues and if nothing else this thread just shows that all the bad stuff has been fixed.

I think the v12 would be like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire lol.

I know this is going against the grain, but I don't like them lol.
