My car has returned all fixed! The alternator was at fault. It has been replaced with a nice Bosch unit (it did have a Valeo one) and fresh drive belts as well. Happy camper I am.

When time allows!

Here is the offending item. I wonder if I could sell it to a company to refurbish.

Why would anyone want a refurbished French electrical component though!

Bin it and go for a drive. laugh

You'd be surprised!
I can't thrash it at the moment, I am waiting for the charcoal canister to arrive. I need to fit that before going for a drive in it.

The thread was on 666 posts, and given the car's lust for bill creation, I thought it best not to tempt fate by leaving it with the devil any longer hehe

My new charcoal canister arrived today, but as it had taken nearly 2 weeks to get here and I wasn't keen on using the car until it had been done, I decided that I would gut the one on the car just incase. Gutting it removes all the charcoal and helps prevent the vacuum.

The offending item.

Removal meant getting the osr wheel off and arch liner out. Once clear you will find it at the top left side of the arch. Getting it off is easy, pipes can be a bit harder as they are squeeze clips and access to them isn't great. Once I had removed it I proceeded to jab a screw driver into two of the pipe locations and then pouring the charcoal out. I then refitted to the car, at which point the post man arrived with my new one. Grrrr, but at least I hadn't boxed the car back together. I removed the old one again and fitted the new one.

I then boxed the car back together and I am now taking a well earned rest before I go take the car for a run.

Doing to remove the vacuum prevents the tank from deforming and splitting, as it is made of plastic.

This is not a job I want to do again, as it is a bit awkward and needing 3 hands to make life easier. Judging by the missing arch liner clip and broken pipe clip it looks like this has been off before. I reckon it was swapped by the nefarious bd who broke the car in the first place.

After using the car yesterday, there appears to be no more episodes of the whooshing noise when opening the fuel cap after running the car, which is good.
TBH, in your position now, I’d probably eff it off as a bad job.

P.S can you at some point upload a decent picture of your dash top.
You said you had the leather dash you see, I was going to get one whilst retro fitting a HUD.
But everyone I look at looks the same as mine.
Just wanted to see the difference before I bought one.
Thanks.

I still like the car, just that 2 years to own a car for me is a long time.

The FULL (not extended) leather option is relatively rare so you won't see them on most cars, but makes a huge difference. Probably not in the pictures as the dash is still black but definitely noticeable in person.

If you're getting bits retrimmed I can also recommend getting the doors done, much nicer to rest your arm on merino leather rather than cheap plastic smile

Yeah, I compromised a lot with mine because it had a engine tip end rebuild and new gearbox under warranty. It’s also a rare model.
I was going to retro fit a HUD and DAB module and the leather dashboard.
But ten weeks furlough has curtailed any plans I had really, money I had for that has to go on rear tyres and front brakes ( discs and pads ) unfortunately.

Tough year for everyone really.

It is definitely much nicer than a sea of plastic. There were 4 trim options available for the E60;

Standard
Extended leather - LKxx
Complete leather - X3xx
Complete leather perforated (cooling seats) - X2xx

Mine is X3A9 - Silverstone II Complete Merino leather.

Pretty much everything in the the interior is leather, except for things like steering column cowling and some small bits of rubberised trim.
Complete leather received Alcantara headling, A, B and C Pillars, and rear parcel shelf.

It really does make a difference. I couldn't have an E60 without it now. It came as a surprise when I viewed the car, and the owner didn't realise what he had.

I know of a few cars who have it, one of them has the perforated leather seats as well for cooling. I aren't a huge fan of how those seats look.

Thanks. Definitely an option worth having. Now if only the original owner of my car had ticked the box for folding rear seats I would be a happy man. They ticked the £5000 box for full leather, but not the £250 box for folding rear seats hehe

Apparently the reason why luxury saloons don't have folding rear seats is to provide better sound insulation from the stuff in the boot, and also no potential squeaks from the latches. That's why you can't get them at all on the 7 series.

I don't mind the odd squeak. A lad I know has them in his and he doesn't see to have any issues with squeaks. If I get an F10 then I will 100% be buying one with folding rear seats. If I do not buy an F10, I will be buying a second car which will 100% have folding rear seats biggrin
