Mooching through the classic cars on ebay, I came across this Jaguar XJS hatchback conversion:

According to the advert, the conversion was carried out using a Citroen hatchback door, and I have to say, it looks to be an incredibly good quality job (can't say I like the fuel filler though!)

What I am struggling with a bit, is what have they really gained with this conversion? confused

Unlike a shooting-brake conversion, I can't see that you really gain much in the way of luggage room, over a standard XJS, so I don't really get it! (I supposed it comes under the heading: "It seemed like a good idea at the time!")

Horrendous.

It now has a mismatched stumpy rear to go with the normal XJS long bonnet. The budget for the rear lights procured some Citroen XM units from the scrap yard, albeit turned upside down.

Saw this the other day. While it seems well done, its pig ugly - IMO.

There was another XJS hatch on here recently, I know the chap who was responsible for it. If I recall correctly I think his tailgate looked a bit better than this one, suited the car a little more.

I was staring at it trying to work out what was wrong, and its this, its a whole rear section grafted on which fools you momentarily with its similarish shape while being totally unsympathetic to the xjs distinctive original lines.

Lets have a whip round and I'll demo derby it guys?

He's hacked away at and gone and ruined a perfectly good.......Citroen. biggrin
Has he just wanted to carry his dog around without it having to sit on the rear seat?? ideaconfused

MoT history is interesting. In 2007 it had 98k miles on it. In 2008 it had 37k miles.

Not sure if this is the same one (2 tone body vs single colour) but it does have the same Xantia bits, the same front sidelight / indicator unit and the US style quad headlamps. Are we lucky enough to have 2 of these roaming the earth?

As modifications go, it is interesting but a plastic rear end on an XJS is not. This, however, is class:-



and of course, Jaguar themselves did a Daimler prototype not as a hatchback but without the buttresses:-

Didn't Banham do a conversion on the XJS without buttresses, always thought that looked quite good

The key difference between these 2 is the blue car has kept the lines of the xjs and it looks nice, infact I think its the car the xjs should have become. The original red car just doesn't work.
