A brave choice - but nothing wrong with that.

Years ago (1990s) my Dad started a business transporting cars around the country using a trailer.
He looked at various towing vehicles and asked my advice as to what he should get.
I suggested whatever 4x4 was available in budget with the largest diesel engine. That should have been a Daihatsu Fourtrak with the 2.8TDI.

He didn't fancy that so bought a 1987 Range Rover Vogue 3.5 V8 petrol, manual gearbox, that already had 100k miles!
White with Police stripes.

However, it would do 20mpg towing at 50/55 mph and was a far nicer place to sit all day than a Fourtrak.

I eventually inherited it for boat towing duties and it was a hoot to drive.

He subsequently went over to Discoveries and also VW Transporter flatbeds.

Have fun with the Touraeg.

From the Jalopnik article:

"I myself would advise you buy something a little easier to live with instead, like an Eagle Summit that’s filled with live snakes, or a 1990s Ferrari."

Outstanding effort OP.

What happened just used shedloads of fuel or did it break down?

If it all goes horribly wrong and the electrics give up then I'd love to see the engine transplanted into an early 986! After all, it is a VAG product so surely it wouldn't be much more difficult than the V6 TT right??

p.s. - thanks for your help regarding the 986 handbrake cable replacement. It was a doddle other than slotting both cables into the end of the handle mechanism at the same time but got there in the end!

Looks like a fun project smile

Is it also missing a roof bar? or is there some situation I'm missing where one roof bar is all that is needed?

If it does the job I imagine itll be very capable and a lovely place to sit. If it breaks then I would think running away from it sooner rather than later would be a smart option before you get too sucked in. Good luck with the business though!

No the car was faultless...just loved a drink & on a 2000 mile round trip he used twice as much fuel as me (X5 3.0d).

They’re great motors though biggrin

I love the big vag diesels!

Had 2 A8 diesels (4.2 bi-tdi) and a map makes the torque hilarious!

Evidently they are even quicker than the S8 of that era (V10) when mapped.

Mine was 400bhp / 750ft lb at 1800rpm. Never needed to downshift it just pulled hard in any gear.

Big diesels are quite understressed too - never had any issues with mine just kept eating the miles.

Keep the updates coming!

It’s a split rack, you can slide the front bit forward when you want to use it and back when you don’t, I presume it helps with economy.

Love it! There’s a chap who drops his kid off at my daughters school with one, sits there sounding all angry and powerful!

I’ll be interested to see what the economy is like when towing. My auto Navara does about 17/18mpg towing, and 21mpg when not. 24mpg is possible on a run!
I'd have expected a Navara to do better than that. I think the Touareg should do similar to your figures. Another member posted on a different thread saying the MPG with his V10 didn't drop much when towing.

Thanks, i'm aware of this. I had a 3.2 V6 Touareg a few years back that had got wet inside due to this (before I owned it)

It is indeed the same vehicle. Crazy isn't it?

Glad you got it sorted out. I think the Boxster suspension would collapse under the weight of the big V10.

Had a 58 plate V10 a few years ago, my experience was mixed, chipped the car to approx 400hp, got 35mpg on a log run but mid 20s on my rounds in the countryside. Towing was obviously fine, but no better than the discoveries or RRover since, standard of mechanical build was good but off road ability was average. As you mentioned, replacement PAS pump and starter both needed engine gearbox out....ugh. Was pleasant to drive but nothing special.
Would i get another? probably not which is manily due to the engine being less dramatic than I expected, chipped 4X4s since have given the same performance with similar mpg. At the price it is probably good value esp if it lasts a while, but necessity for engine out in some circumstances is poor design (disco 4 needed a replacement turbo.....whole body off!! under warranty thank goodness)
Good fun car with a number of smiles when people see the V10 badge.

I was a passenger in one of these years ago. Chap had bought it for fairly cheap and it was immaculate and hilariously fast for a big lump. I’d have one no question if I needed a tractor unit for a trailer.

There is a thin line between bravery and foolhardiness. It's going to be interested to see where this one ends up.
Best of luck!

Top marks for bravery! Nothing more to add other than if the body goes tits up, promise you’ll save the engine. V10s of any kind ought to be saved and preserved.

I’m already imagining of a cheap Mk1 TT with this V10 shoehorned in 😃

Best of luck OP, I hope it proves to be an inspired purchase.

I’ve owned a 2007 V10 for 5yrs and 50k miles

Most of those miles were done im the first 3 years going to the Alps

I’ve absolutely LOVED every mile, I can’t exactly explain why, the engine is the obvious draw but I’ve enjoyed a lot of things about it, my Dad has a 2009 Range Rover TDV8 which I really don’t enjoy, the V10 doesn’t have that madly light and over sensitive steering that makes the RR feel even taller than it is, you can’t say the V10 “handles” but when you are taking a long fast curve of a motorway intersection it’s ROCK SOLID and the steering wheel feels like it’s pointing EXACTLY where you are going unlike the RR!

Running it on winter tyres I’ve never driven a car so resistant to aquaplaning

I get 26mpg on the Mway in France at 85mph which is about a 500-550 mile range, it’s mega on long journeys no matter what the weather!

I average 16/17mpg in town

I bought it at 30k miles with full VW history

It eats pads and discs, had a broken brake vacuum pipe, propshaft mount, tandem pump leak (fixed without removing the engine) new wiper motor, new rear anti roll bar (not uprated)

It developed a problem where I would completely lose boost, this has been COMPLETELY fixed by giving the car 3-4 seconds of full throttle every day

I can park it anywhere with anyone noticing it, which is great

Not great that the headlight beams can’t be easily adjusted for driving abroad

People think you are having a laugh when they are behind you in a petrol station and they have filled up, paid abd you are still parked in their way when they get back

And it’s very funny upsetting unsuspectimg showoffs with it’s acceleration

Good luck with yours OP and fingers crossed nothing needs the engine out
