“It's just a daily” - Renaultsport Clio 182
Discussion
Nice to see this...you certainly did (do) love that Clio
I worked with Frayz up to 4 years ago and was considering getting a Clio 182 as a track/fun car so he very kindly just chucked me the keys to his (this car) to see what i thought of it. I still remember going around the Toomey's roundabout on 3 wheels giggling. An absolute riot it was and I was very tempted. I do love turbocharged cars though so it actually pushed me towards the Megane so I got an awesome mint Megane RS Cup that was nicely tuned to 270 BHP and cost me 3k.
In a similar vein to this story...I had the car for a year and when the family decided to relocate to Singapore I messaged the guy who I bought it off as he sold it for financial reasons and always said that he loved it and if if were ever to sell, please let him know. He gets the cash together and a few days later he comes round and buys the car back off me. Seems these little pocket rockets can certainly get under your skin..

Thanks so much for the kind comments Ben, hope life is treating you and your family well I worked with Frayz up to 4 years ago and was considering getting a Clio 182 as a track/fun car so he very kindly just chucked me the keys to his (this car) to see what i thought of it. Frayz, have you got your ASTs on yet?
Not yet, I was away snowboarding last week and haven't had the chance to get them on yet. I'll report back as soon as they're on though.Ive a few nice goodies to fit as soon as the weather breaks and we stop getting every named storm under the sun
Haven’t had any time on the car lately due to other commitments, but have at least started the strip down and clean up of the roll centre hubs. I’ve all new bearings and rose joints to fit when they’re reassembled.
The plan is to get them fully stripped, blasted and plated before fitting. Hopefully they will clean up okay and i can get them protected well enough to fit to a daily

Every time this (great) thread pops up I can’t help but feel a little bit disappointed that the banging of the ex hasn’t been discussed or documented at all...
Haha, just made me laugh out loud in the office I'm a married guy these days Craig, so not sure public documentation of banging the ex can be published without a divorce on my hands.
So far I've been nailing this old nail since last June and to my amazement, she's not turned into the psycho just yet

What is it with roll centre hub kits that require such meticulous cleaning?
There's lots of other stuff that sits happily in similar areas that require little more than an MOT check every year.
Not looking for a fight, just some understanding. ...cos I may be interes...
Nothing especially however they’re a pure motorsport part and run spherical bearings. There's lots of other stuff that sits happily in similar areas that require little more than an MOT check every year.

These being motorsport items do not wear dust boots. So if you choose to use them in all weathers as I intend to then routine maintenance will be required to keep it all tip top.
This particular kit was purchased from a friends race car that had done very little work, (circa 6 laps of Brands Hatch and some dyno time) but had been left exposed to the elements and subsequently all the billet steel items have surface corrosion.
In all honesty a gentle clean up, some zinc primer and dust of paint would be more than adequate. However seeing as I have the opportunity to fully overhaul them before fitting to the car, it seems daft not to.
I’m hoping that if I make them mint now then they will be easy to keep nice all year round. Steering should be lovely with bearings both top and bottom of the front struts.

Hubs progressing.
All parts that required glass blast have been blasted. I was let to believe the bearings in them were almost new, and they probably were. However due to the corrosion i decided to replace them anyway. Glad i did as they were stuck in pretty damn tight and took a good 16 ton before they broke free of the uprights.
Seemed illogical to me to have them off the car and not fit new bearings so that what i'll do.
I'll chase all threads and hopefully get them to the platers soon

Loving this social distancing, apart from feeling like death. Cabin fever has me doing little jobs on WZD that I’ve just not had a moment to do.
New genuine grille badge, amazing how much difference this has made as mine has a fine rash over it from 125k miles of enjoyment.
Next was a new bonnet sensor grommet kindly donated to me from a kind chap on ClioTrophy.com, you know who you are, thank you sir.
Lastly may result in the death of a few purists.
Removing a perfectly good genuine cup splitter to make way for a Fabia item.
Basically once the ASTs go on, the splitter will be even more vulnerable and at £250 for a genuine one, I think I’ll sandbag that in the garage for a £15 Skoda item.

Nice splitter! I might have to get one. If my 172 passes it's MOT without too much cost...
Can you fit them without removing the bumper?
I did, be easier if you can get the front off the ground slightly - ramps or similar. Can you fit them without removing the bumper?
The Fabia one needs cutting down slightly but it’s a very simple job.
So, next little job was refreshing the tailgate emblems. I’d already replaced these about 7 years, but after 15 years the chrome badges were looking tired again.
I had deliberated at length over if I should fit the cleaner and more modern Renault Sport from the 197 cars. Or do I stay period correct with the original badges?
So much was this quandary I decided to buy both sets of emblems from Renault.
I haven’t polished the car since owning it as is just not had time. But with new emblems going on, the tailgate at least was a must.
So a quick soap, rinse, Iron X, and de tar. 2 quick passes with some Sonax on the rotary, an IPA wipe down and the tailgate was good to go.
I then spent probably another 2 hours blue tacking the emblems to the boot trying to decide what to do. Lol.
In the end I did opt for the newer emblems more compact, cleaner look as I fancied the change. I’m still on the fence about it just now, but I at least have the others if/when i change my mind.

Basically what he said... massive amount of fannying on my part and a lot of time taken up by work and my little girl means they’re not on yet.
However now I’m on lockdown at home, I could technically get them on. However, I can’t be sure I’ll be able to get the geometry done right away due to the uncertainty of local business.
Also waiting for my roll centre hubs to come back from zinc plating. So do I wait for the hubs and fit the whole lot up in one go or do it in bits and bobs and have to get the geometry done multiple times.
Remember it’s just a daily, so I need it drivable. Haha
