A 230 turbo kit does go well but having driven them, I don’t like the way it alters the dynamic feel of the car. The power delivery just doesn’t work for me in the Clio chassis.

ITBs are out as said this is my daily driver. ITBs you lose the AC, the cruise and more importantly the cold start idle as you need to convert to cable throttle with no idle speed control. Not an option when starting it up at 6am every day.

I’ll be investigating how far we can sensibly go with the OEM inlet, cams and maybe high comp pistons etc.

Must be options for ‘regular’ n/a tuning? Headwork/cams mapping?

Having tuned my last Integra- bolt ons & a remap got me 196hp & 135lbs/ft with rev limit extended by 300rpm.

Without cracking open the motor it was going to 8700 & making the same power on the limiter it previously did at peak pre-map (188).

Impressive considering it was well north of 100k miles as well!

So, not tempted by some ported manifolds, cams, RS inlet etc? It's an expensive way to tune in terms of £/hp but there are gain to be had.

Removed my RS inlet and fitted a set of ported/matched inlets.
Cams are next, light flywheel and then high comp i think.

Does the engine adjust to ported inlets, or do they need to be mapped in to see any gains? I'm more used to tuning forced induction cars...

So couple of tiny jobs on WZD this morning that i wanted to do.
Firstly was fit new 12.9 hardware to the TCAs. I had previously zinc coated these and ever since I've been a bit twitchy about hydrogen embrittlement.
Deep down I'm sure they were fine but i couldn't shake it from my doubts and you can have doubt about a key fastener like that.

Next was to drop my front spacers from +16mm down to +10mm in an attempt to dial out some tramlining i was experiencing. Im happy to say this has made a significant improvement to the way the car steers and drives undulations now.

Lastly was something id been wondering about for a bit, brake ducts.
I am yet to see any setup that not only works but looks nice on the front of the car. The ebay offerings look pants IMO and don't follow the lines of the car properly, likewise the bass port idea also doesn't sit at the correct angle. The Cup racers are arguably the most efficient but look ugly and i wasn't prepared to hack up the bumper. I had an idea about rendering an OEM foglamp and 3D printing a duct that bolts into the existing housing exactly as per OEM.
I then found a guy who had done exactly that, but for the Clio 197/200. I had a pretty good idea that the foglamps were a carry-over item from the Mk2 Clio so was pretty confident they would fit.
This is just a trial fit for now. but they fit perfectly as per an OEM foglight and follow the lines of the front of the car perfectly. I'm really pleased with how these look and will soon fit them properly with some ducting and Cup racer deflector plates.

So...
Brake ducts in and plumbed up with some 2 ply 70mm silicone ducting, I’ve also picked up some Cup Racer deflectors which I may fit, I also have some ideas for making some blades to fit on the calipers however I think for fast road at the moment, just getting extra ventilation in there is more than adequate.

I’ve also picked up a couple of other items for WZD. Thanks to @AdamCup for the freshly powdercoated roll bar and Pflex black bushes.
Once fitted, these will complete the entire cars refresh for every bush, mount, bearing and ball joint now replaced in the last 6 months.

I've also found myself a new exhaust in the shape of an Orbisoud.
This is a silenced decat version although I may cut and fit my OEM cat back in. She needs a bit of TLC, but I’m sure we can get there. Ive already sourced a new clamp, and started the overhaul of the brackets. I looked into buying new mounts but Orbisoud wanted €250 for those. So I told them they can keep them lol.
Those that might not know, these are concidered the holy grail of Clio exhausts and Orbisoud wre the company responsible for making the genuine Cup race car exhausts. Theyre said to be the best sounding system available so lets hope so..

Quality wise it’s okay, but not sure why so many rave over it, it’s marginally better than my BTM but nowhere near the quality of my Simpson Race system the Impreza used to wear.

Anyway, ive tried a little polishing tester on one of the outlets and it looks promising, I’m sure it will come up nice and looking forward to hearing it.

Genuine Cup Racer deflectors... hardly the technological masterpiece of design, but theyre light, compact and work.
Freshly coated front ARB with Powerflex black series bushes and stainless fixings.

Brake ducts in and plumbed up, makes the front end look aggressive but still quite subtle and OEM looking.

Orbisoud exhaust sytem, wants some love but ive already started cleaning bits up. Should come a treat with a bit of effort smile

So i threw some time at the Orbisoud this I afternoon. I never took and decent before photos as frankly I was quite embarrassed at the state of it.

Lots and lots of ingrained surface rust. Lovely exhaust but very unloved in its life.

Spent a good few hours with Optiglanz, Billberry wheel cleaner, Iron X and 180/400 and 1500/2000 wet/dry.

Centre silencer and mid pipe wet sanded and all joints cleaned with a brass brush on a drill.

I didn’t bother with the decat pipe so much as I’m pretty sure this will be cut off and my derestricted cat sleeved in place.

First images are as recieved, then post prep and the last lot are after ive given it a polish up.
It’s far from perfect but I’m at the limit of my tools/skills/time prepared to put into it as I’m not 100% I’ll keep it yet.

As received. Photos don’t really show how bad it was, lots of ingrained surface corrosion.

After a good few hours of cleaning and wet sanding.

Finally polished up. It’s far from perfect but as far as I’m prepared to go with it for now.

So you may remember me fitting a new AC condenser over lockdown and since then with everything being shut, I was unable to get the system recharged.

A good friend of mine (John) is a refrigerants engineer and he recommended I also fitted a fresh drier unit and changed the oil in the system.
So I ordered a drier and arranged to meet up with him on a hot day when I could fit the drier when the ambient air temp was hot and dry and recharge the system on the same day. (Today)

So in goes a new Nissen drier, you may noticed this is ever so slightly undersized for the clamp bracket so I added 2 laps of fabric tape to it to allow the clamp to bolt up properly. Which it does. smile

We also fully vacuumed the system and replaced the lubricating oil with fresh. This is PAG46 for anyone interested.
Thankfully in this hot weather, WZD is now recording a huge 24 degree c delta below ambient and the pump is chucking out a healthy 16.5bar pressure. So a huge thanks to John for his help with this today.

In addition to having lovely fresh super cold AC, I finished up the Orbisoud brackets.
These have been blasted, sanded back, fresh studs welded in, zinc coated and finished in Ford Panther black with clear lacquer. OTT on paint but I had it spare.

Theyre far from mint but clean and tidy and most importantly protected for future use.

Almost ready to try the Orbisoud on the car. biggrin

Took WZD to see Andy @engine_dynamics today for nothing other than getting the car on the rolls for some baseline dyno runs.

There really is no point attempting to get more from the little F4R until we know how healthy it is at the moment.

Still the original motor on 125k miles now, and running on the the stock map with OEM cat in place. All HPAS and AC obviously still in place too.
Andy mentioned I would lose a bit due to running it on fat sticky R888s too, which I already knew.
Ambient temp today was 22 degrees C.

It appears WZD is still in a fine bill of health.

Standard 182FF
ITG Maxogen
BTM catback exhaust

178bhp / 157lbsft

Big thanks to Andy for his time today. 🙂

So, now we have a baseline... what way to go, how far do you push a 125k motor in NA format?

That’s not too bad really given it’s age and mileage...can you find a supercharged one to try, closer to NA at least <shrugs>?

Charged ones are pretty uncommon and there’s a couple of bits I don’t like.
They’re a hideously expensive conversion, they’re all Rotrex type chargers so you don’t get that magic charger whine. Doesn’t have the flexibility of a turbocharger and you lose the AC.

I would like to have a go of one first though as the SC was the best bit of my Mini GP
