Thank you sir, i have to agree that theh more i look at the car with them on, the more i like them.
Somehow it looks even tougher on the EVOs than it did on the 2118s.
The rear 3/4 with the O/S/R wheel photo looks absolutely class.
Great colour for these, and these were the motors to have when I was in my 20's.

Managed to have a couple of Clio 200's but never an older one, or the Megane.

I could so easily go get something much newer or brand new with all the trimmings on tick, but frankly theres just nothing else i want to drive everyday thats even reasonably affordable. It genuinely makes me smile every single time i get in it.
Heading up to Caffine & Machine on Saturday morning and undecided if it take this or the Cayman R lol.

Something I’ve been after for a while is a PMS sump guard. I’m always mindful that the car is pretty low and when pressing on in the back of my mind about catching the underside on something.
Luckily one came up on eBay in good condition a few weeks back, so ordered new M8 RivNuts from Nick @ PMS, I already had stainless fasteners in stock.
Fitted it up tonight, which was going perfectly till one of the fasteners nipped up. I’m guessing either a burr on the bolt or insert thread. This then spun the insert upon removal and I knew I was in for some unexpected agro.
Drilled it out and carried on, however where it spun the hole is now so slightly oversized to accept a new insert. There’s so many fixings on it, I’ll live without that one. The rest I copper slipped before final fitting and bolted them up tight.

I can’t see any foul areas on it but I have noticed quite a increase in NVH from it, but not enough that I feel it’s fouling any of the transmission. I’ll have it off again tomorrow and double check for any witness marks. It’s got to come back off anyway as I’ve picked up a pair of Ktec/Vibratechnic engine & gearbox mounts for it.

Biggest surprise is how much it’s stiffened the front end. It feels a more significant improvement than the strut brace added, I totally didn’t expect to notice. I’m not expecting any issues with under bonnet temps but I’ll keep an eye on that too.

Complete waste of money.

11 days after a complete gearbox overhaul.
(check the damage to the front bumper!!)

I’d just come out of a fairly wooded area, making haste on a ‘B’ road with dry stone dyke walls, and as the road opened up I could see across the top of the coming lefthander that it was clear and dropped a gear into attack mode.

What wasn’t clear was that the road dropped ridiculously just round the bend - think sharp hump-back bridge without the going-up bit. I knew even before I landed by the chunks out of the road that it’d be a sore one. Ouch. eek

I was lucky to get away with just a new sump. As I said, the scraping on the otherwise unmarked front bumper shows the level of compression.

I went back and looked at the road a few weeks later – there was oil everywhere; it had obviously caught quite a few people out.

Good purchase!! smile

Had it off again tonight as I had a pair of Ktec/Vibratechnics mounts to fit anyway.
Found no witness marks at all on the underside of the sump guard but I did find of the bolts that hold the linkage protection plate was polished on the top. It was just touching the large M12 bolt head that mounts the dogbone to the engine.
Oddly those fasteners which hold the linkage protection plate are just nut/bolts which means they protrude quite a lot from the back of the sump guard.

I’m thinking either some half nuts and shorter hardware or adding Helicoils to the guard and doing away with the nuts completely.

Even with the new VT mounts I’ve no more sump guard resonance, but I’ll know better when I drive to work tomorrow. It’s nice knowing the underside has at least some protection now.

Ouch, I know my car occasionally gets airborne in a few local spots, so glad I’ve got something protecting it now.

Frayz, purely out of curiosity - if you were to sell this (I know you won't, it's a hypothetical) what would you realistically price it at?

Really enjoyable read, just done the whole thread. Wheel and tyre combo is lovely, I tend to find tyres have a big impact on the appearance, it looks purposeful and aggressive, meaty tyres with flat sidewalls looks the part on these type of cars, not a fan of the rubber bands fitted to most things nowadays.

I think if you appreciate a chunky tyre wall for the way it makes a car feel then you will instinctively like the look of them too.

There we go, perfect balance between wheel and tyre. Yeah there is also that, I switched from 17s to 18s on my car and naturally reduced the sidewall size, didn't really appreciate at the extra choppiness it added to the ride, once the rubber has worn down I will be switching back to a smaller wheel.

Honestly mate I don’t have a realistic price.
I know someone would have to make me an absolutely outrageous offer for it for me to even consider parting with it.

I know there’s nothing this side of £25k I’d enjoy more driving every day.

Your thoughts are pretty much as I expected, to be honest. This is one of these cars that is almost certainly worth more to you in both monetary & emotional terms, than it would be to anyone else.

Your love for this car really comes through in this thread.

Here's one for you - you HAVE to get rid of either the Cayman or the Clio. What stays? biggrin

Haha, thanks a lot. I do absolutely adore it even thou bit drives me mad sometimes. Like I don’t cut corners on it anywhere and try and buy the best for it that I can afford. Yet still I find a new rattle or noise from time to time etc.
I shouldn’t complain really, it drives so tight with all the spherical bearings and bushes.
Since the Ktec engine/gearbox mounts went on the gear shift feels even more accurate and race car like.

Tough to call between the two cars... I think I’d find something else to sell first. biggrin

On my daily I recently switched from a 225/50/17 to a 245/45/18. The 18s feel nicer, though this may be as they are half decent Kumho as opposed to some random Chinese ditchfinders the previous owner put on to sell it. Got 9 months out of em mind. The added bonus/negative depending on how you see it is the speedo has gone from being 4/5mph off to being as close as a gnat's bks to being bang on, need to keep an eye out for the camera vans.

Talking of engine mounts, I've just fitted a powerflex poly upper engine mount. My Clio isn't a daily, more of a thrice weekly. At first I thought I'd made a mistake as it made the car a lot more buzzy. But after a few drives it's settled down and I'm enjoying the reduction in engine movement and more direct connection with the road.
It has made Every Single Loose piece of interior trim rattle though...
