Morning all. I'm a prolific PH reader, but rare poster. My Dad recently gave me his car, so I thought I'd share it on here.

It's a 1992 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.0, which we've had since new. It was used as a daily until around 2005, after which it was retired and left on the driveway with around 60,000 miles on the clock. The car has been used very sporadically over the past 14 years, but has mainly spent long periods of time untouched. Safe to say, it was in a pretty sad state when Dad gave it to me last month.

The car is a base spec 190e, and may not be worth a lot, but it means a huge amount to me as it was the car that I effectively grew up in. I've spent more time on the back seat than I have behind the wheel.

I really wanted the car to play a part in my wedding at the beginning of July, so I sent it off to be partially restored/detailed. The results were amazing, so I thought I'd share them here.

After:

Original first aid kit:

There are quite a few bits to still sort out, but I'm really happy with how the car is now looking. Safe to say, it now lives in a garage, under a cover.

On the to do list:

Remove tow bar
Replace front seat storage nets
Replace front grille plastic
Replace/fix sun-warped door cards

Cheers!

You're a lucky guy (or gal of course!) being gifted such an honest, timeless car OP. And evidence of a cracking detailing done there! A motoring asset set to appreciate I say. These are quite bulletproof as other 'Readers' Cars' entries testify.

Looks great, the seat nets probably only need adjustment if they're not torn iirc.

Pretty sound. Started first time after being sat for four years (with a bit of a charge). Clutch was stuck and a brake was binding, but that's it. It still is a very nice place to be, especially on the motorway. It's quiet, and wafts along gently without feeling hurried.

I need to sort out the throttle body as I had to replace one of the springs a few years back (they snapped, causing the throttle to stay open). The spring tension isn't right, so the car surges under acceleration. I might need some specialist help for that one.

The bonnet soundproofing has also disintegrated (common problem), but you can pick up new proofing quite reasonably.

Thank you. I'm looking forward to keeping the car for many years.

My detailer did a fantastic job. He treated the car in the same way as the £1m+ cars that he also works on. He is Winchester based - DM if you'd like to know his company name.

I think you're right:

Some new bungee might be needed possibly.

Would that we could all say that about our cars...

That's truly wonderful. My dad had a 2 tone gold 2.0 190e just like that when I was growing up and I have very fond memories of it. Was coincidentally chatting to him about it last week and reminiscing about it and been on the looking online for them since.

They're sort of in that limbo period between the classic chrome bumpered mercs and the more modern stuff that rusts horribly, and I think they're great value right now. If i can find a good-ish one cheap for a project I might snap one up.

Nope ... we'd LIKE to, but we'd be lying! wink

OP: really great effort there! I had a 190E 2.0 from 1998-2000. I put >60k km on it in that time. I should have kept it as it really was a very clean example, and full MB Lux service history from new. I was having it serviced every 4-5 months with the mileage I was doing. laugh
The guy that bought it from me was obsessed with installing AC and he destroyed the engine within a few months of haiving AC fitted. frown

Lovely car! I tested an old and weary 190 before I ended up in my E300. Yours is immeasurably better.

Great car OP. thumbup

And a manual is pretty rare.

Although I had a 1989 190e 2.0 manual in blue/black metallic back in 1998 and it was a great car!

Foolishly sold it to buy a C280 Sport auto which was just "meh".

Thanks guys. Will post some photos of minor jobs as I go on.

There are some supermarket dents in the doors - quite noticeable from a distance. How easy are these to remove, if at all?

In my litter experience that depends on how easy it is to remove your door cards?
