would replacing the tappets also see the 'gaskets' replaced?

even if you do have to pile another £1200 into it, if that leaves you with a well sorted rangie for £2500 with a decent LPG system, that's still bottom of the market money and therefore worth doing isn't it?
It would indeed so all of it would be sorted.

I'll see how I get on with it over the next few days.

I can't believe how expensive this bloody car is to insure!
Best quote on go compare is £800.
I'm 30 with a clean licence btw.

There is a procedure for bleeding the lifters on the M62, it'd cost nothing to try it;

https://www.meeknet.co.uk/E38/Tappets.htm

And I'd swap the vanos solenoids from bank to bank to see if the fault code follows the suspect solenoid before paying £300 for a new one.

Also, if you don't now for certain that the timing chain tensioner has been replaced I'd fit a new one, they're cheap enough and very easy to change.

Thanks.
I did that twice last week but didn't change anything. The garage did say that the issue won't be resolved by doing that but I had already tried.

Hopefully driving it properly will help.

Im still a bit perplexed by the insurance. Every car I've had for the last few years has been a minimum of £20k value and yet this 1300 piece of st is more than my other two cars combined.
Makes no sense!

Perhaps those who buy disposable RR aren't the most careful drivers ?

Or when they discover they need work, they catch fire ?

Try a quote on a newer one

Just got into work.
So i've now done 52 miles. Drives really well, doesn't overheat etc but the gearbox seems a bit hesitant around 1500 revs but fine everywhere else.

I'm going to assume that the gearbox oil has never been changed so if I keep it, that will be a top priority.

Everything works as it should except the bloody head unit that randomly just goes quiet so have to press the power button on and off again and it starts working which is strange.
The system itself does reboot every now and then too.

Problem is that slightly smarter ones of these are the tool of choice for dealers in Class A. You’re trying to insure a valueless one, they’re assuming you’re a low grade dealer and pricing accordingly. :-)

I'd say that's amazingly cheap...

I'm 31, clean license, 9 years NCB, I have a proper grown up person's job and I live in a nice rural area, and I pay more than that for my partner and I on a 17 year old 206 that's worth about tuppence.

Without this turning into an insurance thread.. How the hell can that be right? Is your nice rural area in the centre of Bradford?

That's absolutely mental - I'm 32, live within an hour's travel of Liverpool in the suburbs and pay £350 for a 325, and only 500 quid for a W211 that are very highly grouped as well.

Maybe his partner is 17 and had two DUIs and a speeding ticket?

In that case, when she turns 18, I applaud him.

Whereas I insure a 5.0 Supercharged 510bhp version of that car, worth about 20 times more, for £300 fully comp inc business use hehe

laugh

nope, she's 25 and has never had an accident, though admittedly only has 1 year NCB and is listed as a full time student as she is just getting to the end of her MSc.

Also, no thankfully I don't live in the centre of Bradford, I live in a small village near the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border, I think the insurance rating for my postcode is B.

Stupid insurance.

Anyway, back on topic, I hope your rangie comes through and proves to be cheap and reliable, as I would like to have one some day and would love to believe that a nice one can be had for £2500 or so
