I did the same thing, thought I was bored of my utterly reliable Megane DCi I had owned for 2 years and started looking for something petrol and faster. I ended up with a Honda Civic 2 litre Type S and quickly realised what a mistake I had made.

The hard suspension and absolute lack or torque compared to a diesel soon got annoying. Add in the fact that the fuel light came on after 350 miles (I can get 700 out of the Megane) and £265 a year road tax compared to £30 for the Megane.

I swapped back after 2 months
Yeah, I know what you mean - although the ST feels fairly powerful (I think it’s had work done), the crashy suspension isn’t as cool as I thought. Did you keep the Megane whilst you had the Honda?

Think I’ll keep the ST for a month at least, see what it’s like before making any rash decisions.

Ha when I get an idea I don’t stop. It’s a nice little car to be fair.

Well, the Octavia is now un-insured as of today as I'm due to take delivery of a 2008 MK6.5 Fiesta ST in Black. It's been lowered, sporty exhaust on it so let's see if it's a mid-life crisis or not!

I have a couple of guys on my street with nice cars, nice exhausts and I felt I was missing out, as I sold my last hot hatch back in 2007 when we had my first daughter so think it's an itch I need to scratch again.

I'll run this until end of June, ensure it's as good as it seems condition wise and if all good - I'll keep it, but if not and I find myself a bit bored - I'll move it on and revert back to the Octavia

Picture from guy who collected it for me, should be arriving in half hour.

Good choice, I have one myself - a few common issues (PCV hose behind the inlet being the main one) but nothing scary and reasonably economical for a 2.0 petrol! I see you mentioned crashiness, Bilstein B8 dampers will solve this if you're willing to part with some cash or otherwise putting 16 inch wheels with a 45 profile should help; personally I have 205/40/17s still with Eibach lowering springs, it's smoother than standard on good roads but even crashier on bad ones!

Give me a shout if you run into any issues/have any questions, and maybe get yourself on FiestaSTOC.com if you intend to keep the car as there is 15 years of knowledge on there (I am also a fairly active member).

My username is jase_llan on there, feel free to drop me a message smile The PCV hose behind the inlet manifold is prone to perishing, main symptom is an erratic idle - mine has this issue but the idle is actually still steady when at a standstill; however if I drop the clutch when rolling to a stop the car will drop to 500rpm and then rev itself back to 1500rpm rather than just staying constant at 850rpm or whatever my usual idle is.

Ha thanks - not fully decided yet what to do.

What mileage etc is your Octavia? What price did you put it up at?

Ah thanks for that, I was hoping mine would be around 600 - 700 but mine is a little older and 40k more on the clock.

As I have decided the Octavia will be staying for the forseeable and decided I'll try to get another 4 - 5 years out of it - with work mileage included, the car will have paid for itself about 20 times over (no joke).

I ordered a few small things for it last night;

2x Bosch Flat Wipers as the £7 ones are rubbish (expected)
1x Bosch Rear Wiper - same reason as above
1x Set of 'Octavia' badged luxury mats
1x Set of mat clips to stop drivers from sliding
2x Boot struts are they are pretty knackered.

I have even been debating whether to look at getting the turbo sorted, instead of Mr Muscle - even have a new one fitted or this one reconditioned. There is small oil leak too but I am starting to wonder if that's the turbo seals more than anything.

Only done 3k since MOT back in December, I was doing 1 - 1,200 miles per month for work alone before lockdown but now I have spend £70 in diesel since beginning of March.

For the cost of a couple of tins of mr muscle I’d be more inclined to give that a go.

Aside from the vanes being gummed up the blower itself might well be in decent shape.

I get a car allowance from work, I have worked out that if I took the Golf/bottom of the range A class/1 series it would cost me £450 a month in lost car allowance and BIK company car tax. Over the last three years that would be.

Company car = 36 * 450 = £16,200

Shed = £1200 (Purchase price) + £600 (3 years insurance) + £90 (3 years road tax) + £500 (Mot, tyres, servicing, wipers etc) = £2390

I also think I could sell my shed for £800 easily, so that makes it £1590 over three years copared to £16,200 for the company car option.

£14,610 extra that is now in my bank account. Plus right now I am doing less than 200 miles a month so it is nice having a car sittting there that is not depreciating or costing me any money a month.

Thanks, if I’m honest - I get nervous doing anything like that as I’m not that techy lol

Exactly this buddy! It makes perfect sense. I get 45p per mile for every journey I do, on average I get around £5,5 - £6k per annum back (or was until C19 took hold). I reckon I could have even ran the Fiesta ST and still made plenty of money back too. My Mrs wants to keep the ST lol

It was like my xmas morning today when the post arrived.

Few goodies for the car - the flat bladed wipers are just so much better, plus look neater to look at from the window too.

Question is - do we include mats in your 'running costs'? Just need the clips for the mats before i fit them.

Autoglass are coming to repair the chip on the windscreen next week too.

End of month update..

Thought I'd just update this once a month from now on. The FIesta was moved on quite quickly, I worked out it needed £700 worth of things sorting to get it to where I wanted it as it was obviously no shed and decided I'd rather move it on, so that's what I did.

Back to Octavia, I thought I'd treat it to a few things and onto eBay I went replacing items (as mentioned above). First thing was new mats, that were a bit thicker than the old ones as got too much stuff in carpets and wouldn't come out. I then needed new wipers, so decided to spend a bit extra on BOSCH wipers and then thought I'd replace the boot struts as they were knackered - not bad £12 for some new ones. I also replaced the number plates whilst I was at it and I must admit it looks much fresher now. I also stuck on some new Elegance badges were they'd clearly fallen off at some point....

So yes, a little than usual spending your shed but decided it was just little things to make feel a bit happier about the car.

However, the coolant issues have reappear a little - not losing massive amounts, but seems to be losing a little and think the radiator, as predicted maybe at fault so will look at that eventually - only dropping below level after 4 months it seems, so I topped it up for now. The turbo is back to it's annoying cutting out stage, plus sounds like exhaust is blowing when flooring it (before the turbo kicks off) so in a couple of weeks I am taking it over to my mechanic (he is family) and we going to see if the exhaust blow is any worse than it was on the MOT, try and free up the acuator and also the turbo cleaned up i think - see how that goes. Whilst it's in I'm going to drop the oil and change the filter too - given it was only 5k since last one, I guess it won't do any harm!

Purchase Price (£) - 450.00
Current Spend (£) - 873.85
Current Mileage - 173,650 (not going up much not due to COVID19)
Mileage Driven - 5,617

Cost Per Mile (£) - 0.20

Goodies

New wheel badges

Elegance Badges

Old struts

Plates

If you go down the route of using Mr.Muscle to clear out the turbo and help the actuator out, it’s worth getting hold of a little hand vacuum pump or something. Basically anything to cycle the actuator on the turbo with the cleaner in there.
Putting it in and just leaving it without moving the actuator isnt anywhere near as effective as that method; moving the vanes via the actuator helps break up a much larger amount of the crap in there.
For your own satisfaction, get someone else to start it up once it’s all back together so you can see how much rubbish comes out of the exhaust, then take it for a good hammer down a decent road.
I had to do my turbo a couple of times before I gave in and bought a pump from amazon. It’s now been fine for a fair few months.
