Got an engineering question for someone who may be able to help.

Are there such a thing as “pull” actuators for turbo wastegates? All standard ones are “push” so when they see the correct pressure they push the wastegate open.

I don’t have much room for the current push wastegates so I was wondering if I can get pull ones to move the actuation point

The next question is, if I can’t get a pull one, can you put the actuator over the exhaust side of the turbo instead of the compressor side? I’m worried about heat with the rubber inside the actuator but it won’t be directly over the exhaust it would be bracketed off the compressor housing as usual

Can't say I have ever seen a pull one. To get a true pull you would have to suck the air out of the canister, which is not how they work. I suppose it could be possible to pressurise the other side of the diaphragm, but there would be issues with leakage around the actuator rod.

Yes, you can mount the actuator over the exhaust side. Perkins do that so they can clock the cold side of the turbo without disturbing the actuator. Just needs. decent heat shield.
That’s what I thought. Maybe one that actuated on the other side of the diagram but I’ve never seen one so thought I’d ask.

Cool that was plan A tbh, I can make any sort of bracket to put it above the exhaust but I was worried what with it being rubber inside. I guess they’re pretty resilient anyway

Meh, I've seen far worse.

Just FYI if you plan on getting it road legal and past IVA you will need to ensure that the tank (and filler etc) is totally isolated from the "passenger" compartment.

What that means practically is you need to have a sealed cover over the top. You can have access hatches but they do need to be sealed (akin to the ones that typically are under the rear seat for many cars).
I plan on totally isolating it anyway (see floor section in back seat area in second picture), its generally a good idea to stick to the rules even if you don't have to abide by them, they made them for a reason i imagine smile

Indeed. Some of them are somewhat arbitrary, particularly when trying to build a replica but generally they're made for good reasons. I'm being rather serious on mine about sealing the cabin from the tanks and engine compartment, I don't want any fumes getting in as it makes things rather unpleasant at best. So all the seams have been sealed with PU as well as aluminium tape on top.
to be fair the noise from the fuel pump in an aluminium tank is enough for me to want it isolated from the "comforts" of the indoors laugh

aluminium tape is a good shout, can you paint over it though? or would you PU seal, paint and then tape?

Most of mine is aluminium riveted onto the space frame rather than a monocoque so it's all rather different but where I'm sealing welded seams (it's only a couple of places) I've gone paint, PU and then aluminium tape.

You can paint over the PU but equally it'll work as a coating anyway, as long as nothing can get "under".

I'm reasonably sure you _could_ paint over the tape but it may be problematic for paint adhesion (probably need an aluminium suitable primer) and I'm not bothering with mine.
yeah my guess is if i tied painting over alu tape id get rather frustrated rather quickly!

I guess ill just go with the welding then PU sealer then paint like ive done previously and hope that its enough to keep noise and fumes out

3 monthly update laugh

got some RS stuff to widen the arches. decided i paid enough for them so if i want to cut a hole in them for a side exit exhaust im gonna damn well do it

the exhaust sounds good now too, put some more silencers in there and then a bypass valve to make it louder biggrin

back end is all boxed in now too.

I get a lot done between updates on here LOL

I'm back - as promised lol biggrin

its pretty much an RS replica now. just with a few added extras lol. all welded up & not in a million pieces anymore

also the youtube thing is a bit of a catch 22 though, doesnt seem to be as popular as other creators doing similar DIY stuff so I don't know what I'm doing differently, but then again its still easier to put it all on there than a million different forums

anyway, i love this picture. starting to look like a finished car now.

paint soon, so it will all be in 1 colour too which will be nice

maybe the next update will be a picture of it all in 1 colour and built up

Oh please an obscenely loud colour
unfortunately not lol.

I want something that looks good and stands out but understated. which is difficult.

I started off with BMW Java green
thought about a bronze brown/orange
decided on red,
want dodge Stryker red, but its unreasonably difficult to paint
next and current winner is Lexus infrared (works well with the theme too lol)
if I cant have that then ford race red is the last resort.
although i seen Renault Valencia orange the other day and that looks great in the flesh but it might just look like i tried painting it performance orange and failed

ohh and purple turned up on the list at some point too but we already have a purple car in the household lol

Love the idea of Lexus infrared, as you say would sort of tie it together!!!
Yeah its a pretty cool colour too, nowhere near as amazing as Stryker red though. I am in love with that colour but its like a 7 stage paint

either way this seems like a good milestone for an update

Shell has finally been stripped and sent away for paint. so I guess there wont be any updates for a good while yet. plenty to do in the garage so the videos will still come along. feel free to check them out by the way wink
