Dodgy coils/sparks can have an equally damaging effect on a motor tuned or not. Glad you got it sorted!

The amount of people with a turbo motor living with a misfire is crazyness.

I must admit, I'm glad it didn't do anymore damage, as soon as I felt the misfire it didn't feel right, but thought it was 97 octane causing it.

The chap at MRC said the bad fuel may have accelerated the spark plus and coils to fail.

I’m always interested in remaps designed for 99 octane fuel only can they do lasting damage if a lower octane is used or do you just suffer sub par performance?
The Subaru tuning world is fairly uptight on this, there are a number of reports of fatal engine damage due to pre-detonation caused by running lower octane fuel.

There's a particular Subaru tuners up North that have a knackered piston on display in the waiting room with a plaque that says something along the lines of "this is what happens when you use cheap petrol". If I remember rightly, a lot of Japanese import cars are mapped for 98+ from the factory, so if you're importing one and unable to run it on 98/99 reliably then you should get it remapped for 95.
That was me. Back in the day, had a ‘99 STI Type RA at 18 months old. Piston melted on normal fuel a month after import. Rebuilt under warranty thankfully, and Cosworth pistons used instead of STI ones to improve matters I was told.
