some great daft XJS antics here!!

Just curious if anyone on here know what happened to my old XJ-S CGY503Y

Black with gold trim 5.3HE which i had converted to manual with an old Gertrac and Pedal box from a 3.6 and an adaptor plate made by an old boy ex Listers mechanic.

Sadly i had a shunt with her on the Autobahn back in 2005 and in teh subsequent insurance battle lost her as a "write-off". However i see that she was MOT'd afterwards, most recently in 2011 with no advisories.

She was originally the showroom car on Park Lane before being sold to some Toff who got caught short for a few bob in the 1987 financial wobble and did an arson insurance job on his house but was caught so he (and the jag) stayed in storage for a while, until i picked her up in about 2001.

^ Penguin? Love it. smile Thanks.

I'll take your word for it on the V12. But the view of all that plumbing was scary enough. 1970s English plumbing, at that. wink
Ha, yes. I always feel I should be wearing a Penguin suit to drive it, and it does look like a similar colour scheme. The pre facelift car's under bonnet view isn't the prettiest I'll admit, but definitely serviceable.

Penguin looks great never seen one that colour before, I worked as an Auto Electrician in the early 80's at a Jaguar/Rover/Triumph garage the V12's do look scary but are not that hard to work on, I was always busy at that garage biggrin
It's the kind of thing that is absolutely fine so long as you know what you're doing with them.

Sadly I can't say I remember seeing that particular reg, but hopefully its parked up somewhere nice and dry waiting to be saved, especially as it has a manual 'box! Hopefully many more XJ-S based antics to follow on this year wink

I usually have a deep dislike for a vinyl roof on an XJ-S but there is something about Penguin. Can we have more pictures and info please?

Roger Moore did indeed, although his had the earlier mirrors which I'm a big fan of, and a slightly purer white.

I like a vinyl roof on a pre HE (though not on all of them). The penguin is a 1979 car which I bought in Scotland a few years ago. It was reputed to have been a 1 owner car, although was sold by someone who had bought it from that older gentleman, and had none of the history other than it had been stored for a long time and that the 29k miles on the odometer were correct (though unprovable). We've done a fair amount of work to it, but there are things I'd like to do. I had the injectors and fuel rail rebuilt last year, but it still doesn't run how I want it to and it can be a cantankerous old beast, although it hasn't been on the road in a long time so perhaps getting some wind through its lungs may help. I've never taken lots of nice photos of it, but scrolling back through my phone there are a few which I've posted below. What I really need to do is use it!

I love the early XJ-Ss, partly down to seeing them a lot when they were new and partly because of Gareth Hunt's red one in The New Avengers and Ian Ogilvy's white one in Return Of The Saint, they made quite an impact at the time and still look fantastic on screen, even now. I have to admit to being a little scared of the V12 with all that plumbing, it's probably the only thing stopping me buying a S1, S2 or S3 XJ12. Why didn't they offer a straight six XJ-S when it was first launched....?

That said, this early XJ-S looks very tempting, a car I came across because I'm interested in the S3 XJ6 from the same seller....

That car has been for sale for a little while, and used to be yellow originally. I've not seen it but someone told me its pretty honest. It is probably as cheap as you'll find a pre HE.

On another note, an S1 XJ12 will be on carbs, so less problematic wires wink That seller has one funnily enough, and it looks lovely. Missed out on an S1 XJ12 the other month, which turned out to originally have been painted lavender (which is dream spec for me). I missed a manual S1 XJ6 the other week. (again) too...

As for why they didn't offer a straight six initially, I would imagine it had to do with the car being developed before the fuel crisis - and the fact that Jaguar didn't have a straight six other than the XK engine which was probably considered a bit long in the tooth for their new car (even though it did continue on in the XJ in fuel injected form)

I've spent the last hour or so looking at various series XJs and XJ-Ss on youtube, highly distracting, I'm supposed to be decorating!

That LHD XJ12 he has is very nice indeed, the colour combination really works and I suppose being an auto sitting on the 'wrong' side would be a doddle. Can't be may S1 XJ12s about. I originally wanted an S1 but couldn't find a good one within my budget at the time, so ended with the S2 I found up in Cheshire. I've got my eye on a manual S2 Daimler Sovereign which I'm waiting for more details on from the lady owner.

Apologies for the thread diversion but I'm really drawn to Jags and Daimlers of this era wink

No need to apologise! I'm always happy to talk about Jags and Daimlers, and any car is welcome on this thread really.

That LHD XJ wouldn't be a problem, as it has plenty of glass and no manual gearbox to worry about (though personally I like a LHD car just as much as RHD). I've got a project S1 XJ12 (as well as S2 and S3 projects) which is mentioned earlier in this thread, although I've noticed a couple more pop up, inc a Daimler, which I'd love!

You'll have to show me that manual S2! I've got a manual S2 3.4 jag (again, a project), but really want a triple carb 4.2 S1 manual.

Sounds like you have some interesting projects on the go besides the Curfew monster! Every time I dip into Series Jags and Daimlers it's clear there are still a lot of survivors across the range, but with one or two individual rarities popping up occasionally, like that LHD silver S1 XJ12. - there are lots of rabbit holes to go down and I get too easily distracted. The S3 cars are really growing on me though, the US spec bumpers don't look so bad forty odd years on from their introduction and a set of Kents always improves the looks. Asking prices and value for money comes into it a lot with these, when I see decent S3s going for £10k it makes Mk1 Mini 850s at the same price (and often as much as twice that) look ridiculous.

How good does this look, even with the US spec side repeaters....?

I've not come across a manual S3 for sale yet, in fact I don't think I've ever seen one - any idea what percentage were manuals....?

You mentioned lavender, one of the nicest colours on any XJ, 've soft spot for the torquoise blue and murello cherry options, both very much of their time.

That does look lovely indeed!

You don't see many S3 manuals for sale, but they are around. I think Hexagon may have had one last year at around 35/40k.

The other day I got to take the Alpine out in the snow (a lot of it was gone by the time I did), as there were a few more photos to be taken for the Jaguar World feature coming up in the April issue. It was photographed a few weeks ago with the facelift XJR-S but threw some histrionics which meant we couldn't take the driving shots.

It was surprisingly sure footed in the cold, which was nice. I do enjoy driving it, however I am pretty certain I'm going to add it to the 'to sell' list.

Do like the alpines, weight over the rear must help with grip in the snow ... up to a point

Well, it would still kick the back end out if you apply the throttle over snow, but the handling was surprisingly secure in the icy conditions.

Haven't seen an Alpine out in the wild for years, that looks a gem!

Talking of Jaguar World, my '73 S2 4.2 manual / overdrive had a two page spread on it in the March 2016 issue.

Here's that manual / overdrive S2 Daimler Sovereign I mentioned....

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1253943

And some additional photos of it that I found online from when it passed through Mathewson's and another auction house's hands....

Very tempting at the asking price, it was off the road for about twenty five years before being recommissioned. The colour combination is nice too, I like the darker interiors.

How many cars do you have and what's for sale right now....? wink

Oof that is gorgeous! and it would be even more gorgeous at £6.5k wink

Judging by the photo style it was at Historics as well as Mathewsons, in which case I'm surprised I don't remember it (unless it was the one I was thinking of from last year...)

How many cars do I have and how many are for sale..... too many?

My own personal cars:

1955 Land Rover Series 1 V8
1967 MGB GT
1983 Porsche 911 SC cabrio
1985 Land Rover Defender 'Doris' (currently being sold)
1988 Jaguar XJ-S 6.5
1988 XJ-S 'Curfew'
1990 Mercedes 190e 2.5-16
1992 Jaguar XJS 4.0
2008 AM Vantage

I may have missed something there, and got others that are mine but projects under my business.

Cars for sale.... Astra 8, Merc W110, XJ-S convertible, XJR-S (sold), R129 SL, Capri V12....

To keep the XJ-S juices flowing....

Somewhere I have an old photo of my Dad posing next to an early XJ-S in 1979, dangling his house keys over it as if it were his car!

The Capri V12 is an interesting one. It is very much a project and barely viable at that. For me, it would need a manual conversion, dry sump the engine so it could sit further back and lower in the engine bay - so it would have half a chance of being able to drive anywhere near properly. I do like it though, and might get around it at some point.

Some photos...
