Always good when you send a car off to the right home - quite cathartic to sell an unfinished project but get a chance to sample the finished item. Nice.

Wrapping company... don't tell me you're thinking of wrapping the glorious yellow Aston?

Absolutely, it is much better that the car gets a quicker chance at being back on the road, is in a better home with a much cooler owner, and will go on to entertain many people I'm sure.

No, I'd never wrap it (though they did unwrap the bits the dealer I bought it from had wrapped for me). They wrap our company vehicles and do a great job. I was playing chauffeur as we'd just dropped off another.

Cruised into London on the 23rd for a friend's birthday dinner, which was nice. Not the most salubrious of NCPs for the Bentley, sadly. Went down very well with other friends I drove home

Also, though I don't want to even think about painting it, when I park it near the Vantage.... wink

A friend of mine has one of these which lives in an underground car park, it makes everything else around it look cheap!

Have you had any interest in your white S1 XJ12 yet Luke...?
Underground car parks? Saw one in just such a place in Cambridge a few years ago.

Great to see the XJ-S again.

The more time goes by the more I like the facelift shape.

That is an excellent two car garage!

Yes, I was glad, relieved, and many other emotions to have it back in my possession. It is progressing quite nicely now.

I love the early facelift XJS, I think it blends the classic and the modern really nicely.

I thought it was probably well past time that I posted the promised update of J258's bodywork. It is going to be a bit photo heavy so please bear with me. Lots of work already done to what is a solid car, and one I know very well, but that doesn't mean there weren't a few surprises.

I knew there was corrosion around the screen, especially the O/S a-pillar top as the screen had cracked.

There was also concern about the areas directly behind the wheels (especially the fronts), as there was corrosion there as well as daily peppering of stones from farm tracks.

More on that screen rust..

Lots of new metal going in...

Also evidence of previous bodgery under the front of the O/S sill

There was an aluminium plate glued under there and covered up.

Removing more rust around the screen. It was worse than I thought, but I want it to be right, and to last!

A previous repair around the screen

That driver's side A-pillar was quite bad, so that has been fully repaired.

Whilst looking at repairing the damage to the O/S/F sill end, we decided to cut a previous plated part out and have a look at the condition of the inner sills

Fortunately (and as I expected), it was very good considering the age, use and mileage. It has been chemically treated.

More new metal work

Some more progress photos

Rust in the driver's side door top

Checking around the headlights. Rust on the O/S but not on the N/S

Going to be replacing the oil cooler

Now looking at the rear end of the N/S sill...

Another aluminium plate!

Cut away all of that to check the inner sill and repair properly, and fortunately all good.

Chemical treatment

New metal work made up.

Dry fit.

The screen surround as it is now.

Yep, certainly plenty of work going into it and a bit of project creep too, but I am very excited to have it back!

Another update, with plenty more work carried out all over the car.

Some more rust found

Work on the O/S/F light pod

Plenty of new metal created...

This rusty little piece was found sandwiched between two other pieces..

More work ongoing.

Doesn't it look lovely in there?!

The rear light for the Vantage has been repaired, with a replacement planned for a later date when cars aren't testing my wallet quite so much rofl Can't say I'm hugely impressed with how it has been put back together, but we'll see if it works!

Had an easy 300+ miles in the Bentley on Wednesday, going from Essex > Ascot > Snetterton > Essex, though sadly with no track time involved. Averaged 19mpg over the day, and it is just really lovely to use. Also may have fallen slightly in love with a Maybach at Historics...

All of that means I covered more than 3000 miles in the Bentley in February, as the Vantage was off the road for half of it. It has also been a bit reluctant to start without a healthy wallop of throttle and has had a flickering fluid light under acceleration and signs of a leak at the top of the reservoir. Flying Spares offered speedy and excellent service and a new fuel accumulator is being fitted today along with new seals on the reservoir and the service will be carried out early next week.

My thoughts to the OP'

Deep breath and think of England
Drop trousers and lube up
Tell welder to help himself

The pain will ease, the XJS will still be there!

I don’t know why but I was under the impression that the facelift XJS body shell was galvanised. I’m surprised to see so much rot.

Ha, it isn't that bad. If I ever get to the Merak, that will be the painful one!

This is an early facelift and I can't remember at what point the real improvements started. However, given that it is a 230000+ mile car that has been used in all weathers, I don't think the rot is all that bad especially considering a lot of it is superficial.

Another XJ-S update!

Plenty of work ongoing. The sill ends look lovely now.

Also plenty of work on some of the unseen areas to make sure they're good for the future

This area has also been painted as it won't be seen again, and would be missed when the car is painted

Can't deny it was excited when I got these photos as its lovely to see the car with some fresh (and bright) new paint on it.

As the car sits now:

The Bentley has been in pretty much daily use with the Aston still off of the road and I've covered 5,000 miles in it since Jan 31st. I went to the NEC in it on Friday to look at the CCA auction but managed to not buy anything... wink

Also been to another few auctions in it like here at H&H

It has also been something of a load lugger.... rofl I love this car.

Saw you come across Eve’s Corner this evening in the Bentley around 6:00pm. Looks great amongst all the bland and boxy SUV’s so common at the moment.

Good to see the XJ-S coming along too. It can be ruinously expensive but I really enjoy seeing a skilled fabricator at work.

You’ll need your shades on when you go to collect it as that red is seriously bright.

Thanks. Danbury is certainly SUV town!

It is really lovely to see the XJS coming along. It is costing me more than the car is worth, but the cost vs the quality of work I am getting is good value. Man maths!

It is the original red, so shouldn't be too bright, but it will be lovely to see the car beautifully glossy, I just hope that I'm not too precious about it when it is done.

Interesting, Luke, to see how well the Bentley is taking the mileage.... my heat has told me to buy one for a while, but my wallet keeps reminding me of the potential borkage factor and resultant cost!

As for the Jaaag, I'm sure it will re-enter your heart and be properly used again.

biggrin

Parts prices are definitely expensive, as will be labour for a specialist, but it is a car that certainly enjoys being used, and takes the mileage well in my eyes.

The Jaguar certainly holds a special place in my heart, but I do want to be happy to pile mileage on it again rather than leave it sat up for the nicest of days.
