The car has just come up with a recall for high voltage battery.

Has anyone else had this done?

Was that on the central display as a BMW message?

Does it come with any warnings?

Probably the only message I never received on mine! :hehe

A car that I was planning on buying and test driving yesterday had that message on it(a very well specced 2021 model), so I ended up taking the dealer principals X5 45e for a test drive instead.

Sadly though we were both really disappointed with the test drive of it. It just didn't feel like a car with nearly 400bhp for us, and the car properly felt its weight too.

We were both really excited about buying/driving one, and I'd watched the Harry's Garage review of it so my expectations were really high, but I'm not sure what he sees with it that I don't. So it just shows that the only review of a car that counts is your own personal review of it. We both said how meh the 45e was to drive.

I was shocked because I absolutely loved the E53 X5 4.8iS that I had years ago, whereas I didn't get that feeling from the 45e at all in comparison. So we ended up test driving and buying a brand new Mercedes GLE400d instead.

That's interesting, I found it never felt that quick from a standing start, but a rolling start - it went like stink for such a large bus!

There were 3 adults in it to be fair, but I had it in sport mode and I floored it at around 50mph and I wasn't all that impressed with the way that it picked up. I guess my problem is that I'm used to a F82 M4 though, and when you floor that it properly shoves you down the road in comparison.

Have any of you chaps gone with the comfort seats?
Yes...very soft and comfortable.

The one I drove had the comfort seats and I found them really comfortable too. I wondered if anyone actually uses the massage function because I've never had a car with that.

The BMW massage is very weak it’s almost like just an activation to stop you seizing up! Compared to Audi massage which is a lot stronger its very different

Down side using fuel ..
Upside forgetten how nice it is with 300bhp+ Vs just the 115bhp electric motor that gets used most of the time

Why did I go for the X5 over the other options?

Pure EVs just don't have the flexibility I need at the moment - I often do 450+ mile trips with little forewarning.
None of the EVs have a boot big enough.
The RR/RRS cost more and have a much lower EV/ICE range overall.
The XC90 was a close call, but in the end a 4 pot vs a 6 pot for longer range driving was no contest.

Tests indicate it could/should do 50+ miles on battery power, if it gets half of that I will be genuinely impressed. (other owners seem to say the range is good, so we will see)

It will have to cope with 15" of water on the lane tomorrow morning as well....

biggrin
I've only just come across this thread, and it made very interesting reading last night. Our X5 45e must have been built in the same batch as yours, as ours arrived at the dealer in Dec 19 as well. But we waited until January 20 to collect it.

Our spec is very similar to yours but we didn't go for the full auto drive assist thing, but did go for comfort seats which I would say is a must have option. The other half insisted it had the hot/cold cup holders to keep the hot drinks hot and the cold drinks cold! As it's her car who was I to say no laugh

We also bought the car nearly for the same reasons you list above, but with the extra benifit that it also qualified for 100% company write down.

So we've now had it for over 2 years and some 38K miles, this would be higher but for the you know what in the last 2 years, and would probably agree that this vehicle is pretty much perfect and would have no problems with recommending one to somebody.

So to add some other bits about our experience, basicly we have not had any faults bar 2 small things, 1, we started to get a drive train shunt, and it came up with a warning once saying drive train issue OK to carry on, but see your dealer, 2, we kept getting a message about once a week saying rear indicator fault, but would then go away. So I booked it in at our local dealer (which is where we bought it from) and they kept it for a day to check out the 2 faults. Drive train problem was caused by an over the air update that had only 80% completed, once fully complete no more issue. (Note there is know way of finiding out if an over the air update is completed or not unless it gets plugged in at the local BMW dealer). 2 the rear indicator has got condinsation in it, but this is within BMW tolerance limits so it was not changed under warranty, but if it happens again and the car logs the fault it will get changed, go figure!

Very impressed with tyre life 1st set lasted over 30K miles, so replaced with same tyres.

Charging, the wife does mainly at work using a commando soket so is able to charge at 16amps so from empty to full is about 6 or so hours, giving about 42 to 44 mile range in winter and 46 to 48 in summer. In lockdown when I was still at work and she was working from home I used it, and I would do the pre conditon 15 or so minutes before leaving (whilst still plugged in) I would get 49 miles.

As others have said this is a fast car, I had no problem keeping up with a Macan Turbo going over the moutains near Geneva when we were fully laden. I've also recenty done the A399 in North Devon and it was good fun driving

IIRC there were 3 options for lights, Standard, Auto and Laser with the laser being about £1.5k and Auto being about half that, we went with the Auto lights and I think they are wonderful. Not sure if your supposed to do anything but on the french auto routes at night I did seemed to get flashed at confused

One final comment is as we went with white, I do find that people in the GC lane do get out of the way, I wonder why cop

Glad you're enjoying yours smile

I think on mine, (which had the laser lights) there was an option buried in a menu to set them up for LH or RH driving modes.... even my really old Rx400h has this feature too, so I'm sure you will find it in the menu. (Or maybe actually ask the car, it might take you to the correct menu?)

Any pics?

Do you pre-condition before unplugging?

I used to get 95-100% of the claimed range, but a lot of my journeys were on tight lanes and quite slow going.

That doesn't sound right....

Has it always been like that?

X-line or M-sport trim, and what size wheels?

M Sport and I forgot as it's at the dealer.
They are replacing the cells under the recall. So I will see what happens.
I assumed it was just because it was cold but it rarely goes above 40 after a full charge.

It's these wheels ,so I think 20.

Had the new cells and it's still 40miles?!

They've just spoken to my wife and I'll call later. They've explained that heated seats etc will effect the range. Which I understand but this is the quoted range without even switching the engine on.

I've just gone through my old pics, and the display in the car only every showed 40miles at 100% on mine - so it could well be that I am mis-remembering...

However, I'm certain IRL it gives 50+ electric range due to gains from coasting/regen etc.

Picked one of these up last week, tanzanite blue, extended ivory interior, M sport plus, comfort pack, technology pack and the sunroof, love it.

The electric mileage estimate is very much dependant on your previous use, I did a few very small town journeys and didn't per warm for departure, the range was showing 40 miles at 100% when I recharged.

A few days later after some longer journeys (10-20 miles) and keeping it plugged in while setting a departure time (noticed it pulling 1-2 kw when I unplugged, so obviously using the mains power to heat the car/batteries) and it's showing 49 miles at 100% obviously basing it's estimate on previous driving habits.

Only complaint so far is the charging speed, I've got a 22kw charger at work and 3.7kw is just sooo slow!
