I love visiting automotive graveyards, there's still a few dotted around Scotland. This is one of my favourites.

Absolutely brilliant, love seeing places like that, some of those would be worth so much money if they had been saved!! As others have said never see scrapyards like this nowadays!!
The last set of photos is more a private collection than a scrapyard, the owner of the place generally doesn't sell parts but will sell complete cars from time to time.
If the cars hadn't been parked up here over the years they would probably have been made into bean tins by now so instead of being upset about what some of these cars could have been worth, I salute the owners for keeping hold of them, fueling our imaginations.

There's a few more of these kinda places out there I'll write about if there's a demand for it.

No, I hadn't seen that, looks pretty straight. I have pretty much all of the bits to complete it but can't really justify buying another one at the moment.

I think you're right about that law coming in. The scrapyard in the North East of Scotland has been under scrutiny in recent years from the Scottish environmental protection agency about the way the cars are stored and have been insisting for a number of years that it needs clearing.
The other place might get away with it because it isn't a business, it's in a remote area away from the publics attention so nobody takes any notice.
Saying that, we've had sepa at our yard in the past and they have never bothered about any of my cars sitting outside on gravel. They did lose their st when people thought it would be OK to burn tyres or when the owner of the place filled in a drainage ditch with rubble and covered it with mud...

Here's a strange one, I don't know much about this place but the way the cars are dumped here makes it look like they've been here a long time but looking at google streetview they aren't anywhere to be seen!

I'm led to believe that this is just scratching the surface of the guys huge collection of cars and he has a good few more tucked away inside. I did briefly speak with him about having a look around his collection but he was busy working in the shop and couldn't leave it unattended, I've not managed to find out much else but whoever he is he's clearly an absolute legend!

Anyway, back to how I came about buying a fked Lada that had sat in a field for over 20 years...

Lada Riva 1200 by srblythe, on Flickr

Lada Riva 1200 by srblythe, on Flickr

I'd been visiting this place for a number of years and always had a soft spot for Lada Riva's so early on I asked the owner if he'd part with it, after an eternity of negotiation we agreed on the price of £300 for the car. It ran and wasn't that rusty. The owner agreed to dig it out of its grave over a number of months and I arranged transport to get it home.

DSC_9553 by srblythe, on Flickr

That's a copy of Retro Cars Magazine sitting on the boot with a regular feature I used to do which revolved around the kinda places visited in this thread and some adventures in crap cars.

I probably should have bought a bonnet to complete the look externally, for some reason all of the new panels started to rust over a short period of time, I think the black coating was only temporary and should have been painted straight away instead of fitting the panels straight to the car unpainted.

As well as owning this piece of crap, I also went out and bought an even worse Lada Samara which was allegedly roadworthy...

Back to the Riva, I painted the panels with a random tin of red through a spray gun. It looked st.

I just like boxy cars, I wouldn't say the rivas were awful, they were just based on an ancient design and drove much the same as 60s cars did. The samara I had was crap but I'm not sure if I just had a rubbish example.
How many have you driven to base your opinion on?

The story behind that Volvo...

DSC_1002 by srblythe, on Flickr

I bought it in March 2014, a previous owner had stripped out the interior, welded the diff. damaged the doors drifting it into things and stickerbombed it. It looked totally st. I spotted it for sale on gumtree for something like £500, it had some horrendous looking 17" ripspeed alloys fitted which were the wrong offset and rubbed the wheel arches, I brought some smaller wheels with me and fitted them for the journey home. It was in Newcastle so I took my 240 down with my Mrs and a friend to drive the 240 back up the road.

DSC_1005 by srblythe, on Flickr

First thing we did after buying the car was stopped in a retail park and removed the majority of the stickers.

I took it around driftland, it was pish. It was fun to skid around on a wet roundabout but trying to drift on such a large track was difficult. I was constantly having to clutch kick in second gear to get the rear end to step out but the puny 1.7 Renault engine would quickly run out of steam or it would just understeer.

DSC_0379 by srblythe, on Flickr

I got some non dented doors and decided a change of colour was in order.

I passed my test in 2009 when I was 24 which enabled me to avoid all of the extortionate new young driver insurance. I had always loved the look of E30 BMW's but as an inexperienced driver, I settled for something a little bit newer for my first car, a 1999 Peugeot 306 for £700. It was a shed and although it was perfectly usable I never really thought it was cool. A while later I sold it and bought a BMW E36 compact which I probably kept for less than a year.
My third car was probably one of my favourites.

E30 by srblythe, on Flickr

It holds so many good memories, I even picked up my Mrs in it on our first date...

Up until that point I had only really had one car at a time but my Mrs was about to change that, she introduced me to the idea of buying cheap sub £400 motors to run around in and that's pretty much where my great shedding adventure began.

dscf3610 by srblythe, on Flickr

My sheds of choice seemed to be Polo's which could usually be picked up for under £300.

Here's a selection of sheds I had over the next few years, I was only really keeping 2 or 3 at a time and didn't have any off the road parking apart from my parents garage.

I swapped the 240 GLT for a W123 200, it looked really good in photos but was horrendously st to drive, loads of play in the steering and incredibly slow.

It's amazing that you can get a Volcane for £80, when you consider what it's sister car, the 306 GTi's go for! Was it a petrol or a diesel?
It was a D-turbo.

It was a bit crusty underneath and didn't run, I think I sold it for £400 or something.

It was my friends car, he bought it after I sold him the later red Laurel but didn't really get along with it. From memory it had a 2.4 petrol straight six and a 3 speed automatic gearbox. It was slow and uneconomical.

I recently sold the Daihatsu Charade so with a small bundle of cash burning a hole in my pocket I was on the look out for another shed!
Today I set off into the wilderness to go out and buy another car. With a light dusting of snow appearing on the hills I thought it best to take something with 4WD capability and winter tyres.

We talked about crap old cars for a while and I handed over the cash for the beastly Nissan Micra!
I've never had one before so excited to see what it's like. I used my typical laid back approach to buying by turning, handing over the cash and fking off. I haven't even driven it yet!
