I come from behind enemy lines (MX5 NA) so forgive me in the lack of beard knowledge - but what is the "well documented 2ZZ option" mentioned on the thread ?
The car has a 1zz engine as standard producing 138bhp, the 2zz is a similar engine found in celica and corolla t sports with around 190bhp, it also has a rev limit of 8250rpm and has vvtli a bit like vtec from honda.

And if the 2zz isn’t “enough” for you, there’s a few that have put a v6 in it. I’ve had a ride in one (a rotrex supercharged one at that). Absolutely insane!

I’ve had 3 roadsters. For tyres rule 1 is correct stagger. Rule 2 is pressures. For what rubber, rainsports or eagle f1s would be my choice. The guys on mr2roc like t1rs too.

Some more on this from a work colleague who's also had three, he says >2003 F= 185/55/15 R= 205/50/15 2003 > 2007 F= 185/55/15 R= 215/45/16, he advises not to deviate from this as it really upsets the handling.

That's great, thanks for everyone's feedback. I have ordered a set of Toyo TR-1 in the 'correct' sizes to see how I get on.

Plan is to get it on the road and then get a feel for what may need refreshing/upgrading.

Progress report to follow..!

Which "correct sizes" did you pick? smile

I agree with the other comment that they feel upset with the wrong tyres on. I've never tried the square 205/205, but I can't see it being very good, despite the Americans on 'Spyder Chat' loving it.

The new TR1 or the old T1-R ?

TR1 are new but T1R are discontinued. Not tried TR1, all I can say about T1-R is if you manage to keep the car on the road you learn a lot about controlling a mid engined car in a short space of time (mostly in the wet).

Conversely, AD08R which allegedly are not good in the wet, I found to be great. You can actually tell you have an LSD , whereas with a T1-R you are too busy banging your elbows on the door panels doing spectacular power slides from every junction.

They basically did what they did to the mk2 MR2 and beefed up the rear rubber whilst keeping the front reasonably modest. The idea being that the average driver will encounter understeer first (hopefully).

I worked in insurance and when these came out they were being crashed lots. People were coming from fwd hatches, predictable BMW's and even MX5's and stacking them on roundabouts and stuff.

The age old question 'why didn't they fit the 2ZZ' centres around the ULEV status they got with the 1ZZ, the potential insurance group hike and the fact the average buyer wasn't going to be able to handle the car.

I took in part exchange in ~2012 a 5,000 mile MR2 that I think was 2001. It was on the original (rock hard, perished) tyres. It was February.

Scared the s*** out of myself.

Anyway, carry on - you got an absolute belter of a bargain there!

Please break your rule on the tyres especially this time of year. Mr2s are unforgiving on cheap tyres in the cold.
Or count the rule as 'per tyre' not £256 for 4.
£250 will get a decent set of tyres upto 16”/17”.

Cracking result OP.

Very nice. As another MR2 owner (8 years and counting) the roof is my current concern.

The yanks seem to have the replacement kit but sell through only a couple of outlets here, leading to some unattractive pricing (imho). Had a fold that became a crease that morphed into a 6 inch slit last year which I’ve patched with neoprene wetsuit glue and an off cut of roof material. As I only use it Apr to Sep it’s not a biggy, and I have a hardtop too.

Your deal looks fab for that. How much stuff will you take with you on your trip? Not as much as in the Mini or MX5!

First on the list was to check the master fuse (including cameo from the Mini!)....

I had a 1275GT in that colour. It’s not 822S at the end of the reg by chance?

There’s aftermarket roofs available as good as, potentially better in some cases than the original.

I think there’s a company in Swansea iirc that are oft-touted on Mr2roc forum as a top quality product with fitting included.

Its Just Adz

Jack r smith Swansea for the roof.

As for being a handful in less than dry conditions, don't underestimate them thinking it's only 138bhp. They grip and grip and grip until they let go and snap round pretty quick. I don't think mid engine and short wheelbase helps.

I only had mine step out a few times as I drove very carefully when needed. Could of ended badly a few times if I was doing another 20-30mph and I was fairly experienced at rwd albeit front engined.

Another vote for Jack in Swansea. A bit of a trek for some, but did a fantastic job on my roof for an excellent price.
