The older one do have issues, apparently my N57N engine doesn't. Then again there aren't many with over 200k on them.

There's a few posts from the USA regarding 530d's with my motor in having issues with very high mileage.
The M57 doesn’t usually suffer from timing chain wear, I’ve run one to 250k. The later N57 does. (Less common than the N47.)

Hopefully the warranty will sort out the problem ASAP.

Unlucky OP, I bet that is first time it has ended up on back of lorry too in its very short/high mileage life.

Look forward to seeing it back shortly, hopefully.

If the engine has done 220k on the original chain then hopefully they will replace it under warranty for another 220k of happy motoring!
I’ve got this engine in my 535d and I’m going to replace the chain at 90k unless someone tells me otherwise.

Car will be back soon OP - fingers crossed all covered under warranty for you. Don’t see why not. Please do keep us posted. We want to see this get to 500k miles yet! Then egg’ing you onto to 1 million mile mark ...

Very interested to know what the cost is to replace the chain on the N57 outside of warranty from a reputable BMW engine specialist garage.

Well in typical BMW style I’ve heard nothing today...

Hope you get it sorted and they correctly diagnose the problem.

I was thinking about whether to continue with the BMW warranty on my D3, but this has made me think twice now!

I used to get that all of the time with my Mondial warranty 645Ci. It used to be in, quite a lot of the time, too!

Finally got a reply as to whats happening with the car.

After diagnosis the is apparently the noise was coming from the exhaust cam.

Cam has being stripped out and found to be visually normal.

The exhaust cam, followers and lifters are being replaced to see if that fixes the noise.

I'll know by Thursday afternoon.

Thank goodness for warranty. Sounds a fairly expensive job.

At this point they may as well stick a chain on it, especially since they've had it all apart before. But at least you're not paying. smile

Further update:

BMW UK have sanctioned a full strip down of the engine to try and find the fault.

Sadly though, due to the lack of senior staff on the ground, it won't be done until lockdown is lifted.

Luckily I still have the Range Rover to use but I'm starting to wish I'd took them up on the loan car!

You must be able to get a loan car now that things are taking longer and getting more involved?

The question is... does it miss you? It's probably glad for a break!*

I thought we had an update then.

I do hope you manage to get it resolved and back on the road soon.
