Okay, so some varied interpretations as to what a 'short' engine constitutes...

Its always been clear cut when ive spoken about it in all my car dealings

Short is the crank rods pistons block and tall is the same with head , cams and valves......neither has ancilliaries

Slightly different engine biggrin but my B5 Biturbo is also being weird. It was suffering oil loss ( burning ) so I have had a complete new bottom end ( block, pistons, rings, big ends, timing chain and all seals ) and now it is worse than before! Valve seals were checked and pronounced good ( I told the dealer to change them three times but they didn't! Turbos have been checked 3 times and pronounced good and it has had the crankcase breather system changed three times! Can't wait to get it sorted and get shot! It's a shame because I have wanted one for about 30 years and it's turned out to be a nightmare. Best of luck with yours!

I guess manufacturers vary. Here is a short engine for my BMW:

I always thought a short engine was a built engine, but no ancillaries etc

Rang BMW to clarify. Typically they are very BMW about it....

Usual meaning:

Short block - Block with pistons - No head - No ancillaries
Long block - Block with pistons - Head - All ancillaries

BMW meaning:

Short engine - Block with pistons - Head - No ancillaries

So its somewhere between a tradition short and long block.

i.e. a completely new engine as the layman would know it

Looking hopeful for the new engine then, fingers crossed for you! As was said earlier in the thread - bargain of the century if it happens (shame about the time spent without the car though).

Without knowing about the OP's daily activities, all things being 'normal', this is the ideal time to be without a car used regularly for high mileage. Unless there are regular trips to Barnard Castle that have been missed out on... smile

Sadly I've still been doing nearly 500 miles a week in all this! (Farms all round the UK)

Rangie has taken a hammering again!

I see, so this is quite a blow to you. What awful timing... it's working out well for me, however, as I've put the car in for a full (minus roof) respray and they can take their time and do it properly as I'm not using the car at all really during this period (despite having to commute locally to work, daily). The insurance also lapsed, so I'm getting a month free of cover... better than a kick to the nads.

Luckily the F30 D3 engine seems quite problem-free.
So it was you who jinxed it.
No comment ;-)

Yay!

I think that's about as good as it gets. Biggest concern with that high mileage car was the engine, and a new one means (hopefully) lots of trouble free motoring!

Did they say what was wrong with it?

No issue found.

Engine parts were all within tolerance which considering the mileage is amazing!

Which left them, I assume, with the option of throwing it back together and risk it still knocking and starting this all over again, or just putting a new unit in it and being done with it..

That's what I call winning. That car will now have another 10 years of life injected in it.

If you ever want to sell I claim first refusal
