Hi JC...,

When DW refused to update their database - just one line of code to affect
only existing entries involving myself and several other key posters - when
hundreds and hundreds of pics had lost access url to postimg, it was the
last straw. Being a member of the Review Team was a farce, basically there
was no team and most of the reviews I did was of stuff I'd bought myself.
You've no idea how privileged I felt when I was invited to join. Me, a bloke
with gammy hands and an unsteady gait!

I had to stop because no-one else was posting and I didn't want to portray
myself, or the supposed team, as a one-man band. I did propose a few ideas
to broaden the section, when asked; this mostly to make reviews easier to
find and prepared to do the donkeywork to achieve it - all mocked or fell on
deaf ears frown

Regards,
Steve

Thanks for your reply Steve I’ll dig out the guide from FB, much appreciated smile

Don’t worry I was friends with one of the original DW founders and was one of the first members so I’m well aware of what goes on behind the scenes. I literally go back on there when I need a memory refresh from one of the guides, unfortunately a lot of the decent ones (like yours) have gone.

Your 5s looking fantastic mate. Always thought I’d have another myself one day but I think that ship may well have sailed now unfortunately.

Thanks for the kind words about the R5 smile

It has been a rum ride, but now that I'm more or less through to
the other side, the achievement of a really fun car to _drive_ is
immeasurable! It's not until I'm hearing that turbo wind up to its
full chat that I realise just how much I've missed the hooning...

That sounds like I'd encourage anyone and everyone to have a go.
The boat having sailed should now refer to the shark-infested seas
where unscrupulous pirates await, rather than any perceived fail
on your part. The "R5GTT Tax" is far more severe than VAT ever
was and I certainly could not repeat such an adventure from the
start these days.

Yesterday, I saw an advert for a heatshield, the main turbo one
@ circa £53; current asking price: a full monkey! (Rather apt eh?)

Steve

Don’t feel sorry for me mate - I was merely an observer and if anything, take comfort in the fact it’s nothing personal against you, it’s just what forums are/were like. Worse than a bunch of girls sometimes.

I know what you mean about starting from now as well. As much as I’d love a GTT, there’s no way I could ever justify spending £15k+ on one unfortunately. I’ll just have to hope my Dreamcar Giveaway comes up. That or the lottery smile

Top Secret!

As you can probably imagine, I've been in email correspondence with the guys who
are rebuilding my two turbos. These were bought and sent off to them sight unseen
here. There didn't seem much point in unpacking them only to have to repack them.

Anyway, it turns out that not both of them are OE standard. Now, I'm no expert on
these matters, so most of the techy stuff is somewhat lost on me. Anyway, here's an
extract of some feedback received...

Turbo Chap said:
The result is a lighter wheel than stock and the ability to have smaller hub, smaller nose, and
extended tips greatly improving the efficiency of the original unit.
Sounding pretty good so far, eh?

Turbo Chap said:
I can use a billet compressor wheel in the larger size on the Turbo you are going to use
"on car" and am confident the result will give you a faster spool than the original cast
wheel with more torque through the whole rev range, and with a healthy increase in
flow so more power at the same boost pressure (if I was to take a guess, id say around
15-20%). If you are going to be sorting the fuelling etc once up and running then
this will not cause you any issues and you can ensure it does not run lean.
That sounds like music, even to my untrained ears! The car presently has a propensity
to run lean and I understand that can be a common trait.

Turbo Chap said:
This would still look OE externally but would make the car really fun to drive without lag.
Oh my word! Am I blessed with some wonderfully enthusiastic professionals, or not?

Just a teaser post - they're keeping a log of goings-on for me, so plenty to come yet!

Regards,
Steve

Erm, this build did go horrendously wrong at one point. It's described in my
narrative, but it's not in the way described above. I don't much appreciate
the reminder frown

P.S. My spare turbos have returned from their rebuild, so news coming very
very soon. This is too much excitement for an old boy... wink

Hello Folks,

Well, with the hopefully temporary haitus behind us, my two sight-unseen turbos
have been returned from their rebuild. I asked the guys there to take some before
and after pics so that I can record them as part of this narrative and also as
part 11 of my R5GTT Restoration video series.

At this point, I'm not too much au fait with the technicalities, so I'm hoping
that Danny at Turbo Rebuilds will be able to fill us in. I've added reference
numbers to be able to identify what caption goes with which photo.

There were two turbos, bought sight-unseen from eBay, sent with a purpose of
swapping the original, which is still working well, with a rebuilt unit more or
less as the final stage of the car's overhaul.

The original unit will be "preserved in aspic" so that if ever the car does
get retired somewhere, its original, working turbo can be refitted and complete
the picture of originality if the then owner decides. While the car does have
a few deviations from original, the greater majority of the car is still fitted
with parts fitted to it on the day it left the factory.

Of course, many service parts, or those with built-in obsolescence have been
replaced of necessity. However, replacing parts simply because they are "new"
or newer has been avoided at all costs. To me, that's not restoration, that's
just building a replica. Also, the car has had all this money spent on it as all
along my stated aim has been to to drive it, yes, like I've stolen it!

The Process

Taking on a task like this was never going to be cheap! I did a fair bit of
research before deciding where to send these parts. In the end it came down
to a comparison of web sites and trying to ascertain where I'd get a bit of
personal service, rather than being just another cog with a number. This is
quite a big financial risk and dealing with an artisan rather than a big
company was important to me.

My judgement wasn't far wrong. From the very first enquiry, not long into
lockdown and with no particular hurry on my part, it was pretty clear that I
was going to be dealing with an outfit with a passion similar to my not quite
clear expectations. While I'm pretty familiar, or should I say, was, when it
comes to turbos, I do go a bit blank.

The unopened boxes were duly collected and a promise to take photos of progress
was elicited. When lockdown started to ease, I enquired whether the "I want it
yesterday" brigade were alive and well, only to be assured that not only were
they alive and kicking, but breeding profusely! I just gasp at that!

In due course, some news, as outlined in a previous post, where there's a bit of
a hybrid lurking and I'm having to ask for more information because I don't
understand the implications. Turns out that some of the turbo-lag could be
ironed-out a little with this other kit. I'm not bothered by turbo-lag, but as
I now have a quality machine, perhaps some quality running to match would be good.

I was promised that my kit would be returned to me "as good as new"! Now, that's
a bold claim by any stretch, but as the pictures verify, that's just what came
back - 2 turbos, as good as new.

So, today a box is delivered, really well packed with its heavy contents...

top packing removed to reveal...

then finally...

Once Karl comes round, I'll be taking a few more pictures.

In Summary

Getting the turbo replaced or rebuilt on the R5GTT was more or less the final
part of its restoration. With that and the fancy AEI unit, I'm looking forward
to getting the car back on to the rolling road. Once fitted, I have 100 miles of
running to do, then change the oil and filter. So, in due course, the car's
resto can be described as complete.

My initial faith in Danny and his team at Turbo Rebuild has been fully borne out
by my receiving a standard of service, considering the exigencies of the time,
that I cannot fault! At every key stage, I've been kept in the loop not with
just courtesy emails, but with a clearly evident passion to provide me with a
top-notch result.

Not a cheap exercise, but one that fills me with plenty of anticipation for a
car that will run as well as it looks. Not only do I heartily thank these guys,
they've given this old boy a great deal of pleasure! Thanks.

Regards,
Steve

Hello Folks,

Well, another year, another lockdown, yet still more buying to do. I have to
say that this purchase was very much an experiment. My previous adventures
into buying new window winders did not go at all well, and with all that's going
on, and the interruption of Brexit, I wasn't sure that buying from Spain was
going to be any more secure than was the abject failure from France.

There is another aspect to this in that my first venture was to purchase some
Magnetti Marelli products that I wasn't that certain would be of equal quality
to the OE items that happen to still work in the car, albeit a little slow and
hesitant. So, around Christmas I happened upon these winders from a seller
in Spain and the price for the left+right combo worked out at about £165
including delivery.

Anyway, after a bit of a hiatus as we sort out VAT matters due to Brexit, and
despite my ordering in 2020(!) the boxes arrived today. The first surprise
was that these were not Marelli products, but from another Italian firm,
Politecnica80. So, promptly I research their web site and I find that this
firm makes nothing but regulators and their car manufacturer list begins
with Renault and ends with Mercedes.

The company started 10 years before my R5GTT hit the production line and
their blurb claims their manufacture of OE items. So, it occurs to me that a
company that builds nothing but hundreds of variations of window regulator
probably knows what it is doing.

When I undo the box to inspect its contents, and what I find is clearly robust
and well made, then this buyer is one happy bunny! When I see the prices
that Renault were charging for just one box back in the day, it seems that
I have happened upon a bargain too.

? Politecnica Window Regulators available here...

Regards,
Steve

P.S.
Obviously, since leaving the EU, there are VAT considerations to take into
account. The worst part of that being the stupendous charges that Couriers
make to gather this from you on HMRC's behalf.

Hello folks,

I can't believe that the last outing the R5GTT has had was in March 2020! However, there has been a couple
of steps forward, along with a couple of stumbles. Got a bit of a shock when Karl phones up to report fuel
in the sump. Turns out that the carb float valve got a tad sticky.

I got the car back today after having the pax door glass replaced as well as fitting the new regulator.
The eagle-eyed may have noticed the scratches in the original glass. Seems that Karl was not that impressed
with the new kit. I'm hoping to tax the car on Thursday and have a bit of a day out or three. Maybe they
need a few winds to "run in". Will report back.

On the fuel issue, we've decided to install an on/off tap next to the carb. I wasn't aware that BP super did
actually contain ethanol (pre 10% days) so the fuel has been changed over to Esso. Is anyone else having
fuelling issues? The tap fitting isn't so much of a theft deterrent, there's two immobilizers hard-wired in
to do that job.

As ever, some pics...

What's the goss on "agreed values" these days. Is, will, the net zero effect start having a negative effect?
I watched the Anglia Car Auctions for their latest heritage car sale and it looked like some were really
struggling to make their price.

Great read start to finish. I'd also seen that news story, sad to hear that but at least it remains.

These were just before my time driving, and those that didn't end up in the hedges as above got pinched. I recall one in my parents street getting pinched.. They broke into his dad's transit, his mums car and his brothers car to roll them out the way before pinching the R5GTT which was blocked by them all against the garage!

I'd recognise those crummy rear caliper designs anywhere as a 306 owner!

Brings back memories of simply huge insurance costs, which I thought was
just marketing hype. Apparently, it featured in the top 5 favourite targets
for car thieves for several years of its existence, often only beaten by Range
Rovers. In my book, any equivalent to castration was still too good for these
pesky blighters!

The risk of theft still exists, but mostly so the cars can be broken for parts.
My spies tell me that prices may have stabilised for a while. That needs to
soon feed into the spares market because there are still far too many idiots
who make a very big show of their PayPal brandishing. They'll stand and try
to justify their utter stupidity until their last breath!

The whole point of the R5GTT was to be a fun car, more or less within reach
of most enthusiasts. I've never been a fan of the car getting absorbed into
the cheque-book sport market. As ever, I got accosted a few times today by
people anxious to know if it was for sale. When the realities of ownership are
pointed out, especially the steps I've taken with regard to keeping access to
key high-ticket items, the expressions of dismay are profound. How I hate to
disappoint people!

Hello Folks,

After a 3 year absence from going to car shows, last Sunday saw a trip down
to Glemham Hall for their "Classics in the Park". Car was on form and got many
admiring glances both there and back. Despite being surrounded by some
awesome British metal, the wee French beastie held its own. I can't believe
how sometimes it upstages its companions. I hope those of you who followed
the QR code to this thread have also enjoyed your visits.

What a great day out and thoroughly enjoyed.

The really pleasing thing in these photos is the faint green tinge from the
metallic paint. That's probably also down to the clarity of the coating the car
wears. Since it was given the Octagon Treatment, the paint is only cleaned
with Optimum No Rinse, then given the occasional dressing of Mist-Plus, from
the ADS/Sentinel car care range.
