Whistling sounds loads like an air leak (inlet or exhaust) to me. That or a accessory bearing I reckon. Certainly not a massive issue IMO!

Have really enjoyed the YouTube clips, hope you're able to get it going without too much sweat and tears.

The starter circuits are also notoriously troublesome. Battery in the front, engine at the back, lots of wire and connections in between in both HT and LT circuits. They wont ever have been cleaned, suggest find them & clean them.

If you had a power deficiency it shouldn't matter what state the battery is in, the alternator should provide enough juice to run everything anyway, So I'd look at the charging circuit before changing the battery.
I will check it all, but I think if you have a slightly duff battery it can play havoc with other parts of the car, even if as you say in theory the alternator should be taking up a lot of the slack.
A dodgy voltage regulator in the alternator can cause the alternator to work intermittently

Enjoyed the vid as usual

Re the shift shaft oil leak, that's not so good. The issue is that if the front one has gone its likely the one between the sump & the gearbox is also no good.

When that happens you get engine oil going back into the gearbox which doesn't do it a lot of good so it's not one you want to leave for too long.

Suggest get the car level & remove the gearbox fill plug. If you get oil coming back out the gearbox the you know the seal has gone.

At the very least fill the gearbox till the oil level is right up to the fill plug & then keep an eye on it. Easiest way to fill the gearbox is through the transfer case.

Bear of a job to change the seals though, you need to remove the dipstick tube which can be no easy task. Full details on the usual F forums.

Brilliant video, as ever.

I did think Earth to begin with, both for electrics and the fuel pump issue, it might be the pump isn’t dead...

I had 2 205 GTi’s, a 1600 and a 1900. The 1600 was the ltd edition sorrento green, loved it, the 1900 not so much. Would live another and there’s a gorgeous one for sale at the moment, but I’m not telling you where!

Umm I’ll have to check that. Is what you’re saying that if remove the gearbox full plug and oil come out then that because the extra has gone from engine sump into gearbox sump?

Exactly that. Caveat that you dont know exactly how level the car was when the gearbox was filled or whether it was brimmed. So it's a bit of a blunt instrument but if a lot came out then it would be odds on. Ideally you need to set it to full with the car level and then keep an eye on it & check it reasonably regularly for a while. Shift shaft seal failure is pretty common though. Gear box fill plug is on the back of the case, not that easy to get too and easy to damage so careful with it.

Agree, one of the prettiest cars of all time imo. Great thread and interesting and informative videos. As a QV owner I'm following you're exploits with interest. Although, obviously having fuel injection is the lazy man's route to 308 ownership smile

Enjoyed the vids thanks.

I went back and watched the 964 vids, pretty much how I'd have one, even that colour. Have you still got it?

Patience of a saint springs to mind Jack ...

Glad you sorted the fuel supply issue. Worthwhile getting the carbs set up with a CO meter to improve the fuel consumption ?

I guessed it was the cooling fans when you said the noise appeared as soon as you switched the ignition on smile

Not many really amusing threads on FChat, but I found this gem at 3 am this morning ...

Enjoy it, the guy's got a very dry, ascerbic, British SoH biggrin I'm sure you will, because you'll be able to relate to it better than most ...!!!

Truly shocking the butchery inflicted on these cars by less than proficient techs/grease monkeys over the years frown
