Guys, never a dull moment. The Influenzo gave me another heart attack a few days a go when it made a noise akin to the gearbox disintegrating. But it turned out not to be as serious as it seemed. It’s coming close to my birthday and this is the only reason I can fathom that the car made me buy anew fuel pump, that it turned out wasn’t needed. Ah the joys!! Here is the link:

And a couple of lovely pics!

With regards to the knocking noise from the back of Pepé, it might sound stupid but is the spare tyre fully secured in place? Could it be that moving around in its cage or the cage moving at all?

I’m pretty sure it’s secure but I’ll check again!!

You realise you can never get rid of those lucky pyjamas now... in fact I suggest never washing them or taking them off just incase they lose their magical potency... biggrin

Cheers,

Drew.

WRT to your poor starting issue on the 205 you mention - I had a similar problem with my 205 GTI and it was the gearbox earth strap. Simple test if this is the case with yours is simply to run a jumper cable from the battery negative to the engine block. This obviously bypasses any earth strap and is a good quick test to rule out any earthing issues!

Went through a couple of starter motors before I figured this out! Resistance increases with heat so what worked when cold doesn't when hot.

Also worth mentioning that you can fit a 306 starter motor to the 205 which is lighter and more powerful and crucially much more plentiful! Just make sure you get one from a XU engined 306.

I am really enjoying the videos and feel like I am living the ups and downs with you.

So pleased that the really serious sound was something quite simple.

Even the wife is enjoying them.

Loving the channel and updates & been following for a while

I went to check on my r32 today , but my friend Took the cover off & rolled out his 205 gti ( Japanese import RHD with factory a/c & sunroof)

Brought back so many memories & cant believe how small these things are.

Had a lot of time thinking On the drive back that I should buy it as it’s for sale ( & immaculate)

Keep up the great content

hi Jackpe,

I've been following your channel but I didnt realise until now you are a member on here, nothing to add other than keep up the good work, really enjoying watching your videos.

You are a braver man than me having the 308 in the garage then buying a 205 GTi on top as a daily driver!

There must be days when you wake up wondering if either car will run?

Long shot on Pepe’s driveline shunt Jack. The O/S/F (IIRC) engine mount has rubber buffers fitted fore and aft to limit the movement of the mounting bracket.
The buffers are shimmed to increase or decrease their proximity to the mounting bracket. My 1.6 205 GTi had an annoying click upon acceleration, I traced it to there being excessive clearance between the mount and the buffers.
The buffers can be seen top right in this image :

and they fit either side of this mount :

Are there any shims under either of the buffers ? IIRC the spare shims are mounted the “wrong” side of the buffer mount sheet metal under the securing nuts. The shims came in various thicknesses.

If they’re missing, they’re available here : https://www.peugeot-tuning-parts.co.uk/~cn49882a/2...

My experience of “clacks” on French cars is it’s a failed/broken spot weld. My sister had a Peugeot 106 that “clacked” every time it turned left or right.
I noticed it the first time she took me out in the car.
I listened and eventually traced it to the sill area.
She took it back to the Peugeot dealer and they fixed it FOC. I wasn’t sure if the car had come like it from the factory, or had been involved in an accident ...

Are you going to start a separate thread for Pepe to save diluting this one ?

Once again thanks so much for all the kind comments! I do need to start a separate thread on Pepe the 205!

Back to the InfluEnzo.. once again the hand of fate has intervened and a 30 minute job has turned into two days of cursing! There was a very small leak coming from the water pipe going from the expansion tank to the water pump. So I got some good quality silicone hose, drained part of the collant and set to work. This is why I found once I removed the pipe

So.. ended up having to remove a fair few bits to get to the water pump so it could be removed. There was no way that union was budging, having been there since 1979! Will have to take it to an engineering place to remove it. Still working on it.

Poor casting I wonder ? Or more likely run without anti freeze/corrosion inhibitor after a cooling system leak previously ....

Changing the coolant on these things can be a bit of a (messy) 'mare & so it never gets done often enough.

Great content as always.

Not sure if I am allowed to post this, so apologies mods if not.

I saw a cool 308 the other day - short clip of it accelerating away!

Jack, firstly - total respect for taking on the "Agatha" (Agatha Chumley - Higgins' quintessentially English lady friend) on a DIY basis.

A quick question for you - how would you say it compares to the Espirit?

Some Espirit owners have commented that much as they loved it they felt it was but nano-hair's breadth from being a kit car!
