Triumph Herald 13 60 - Loud and rusty
Discussion
Harold has been sitting under a cover while I figure out what to do with him, the rough running issue driving me mad.
It idles fine but won't rev past 2k and really hates any throttle to the point it can't really be driven. I limped the old boy home from petrolhedonism at Wembley with this issue and he has sat there ever since.
Had a few sessions, redo timing, rebalance carbs, colour tune carbs, various new earths and other guesses.
New coil, ht leads, plugs, vacuum pump (old one was bent), re-did timing and fueling. No luck, still cutting out at 2k despite being rich.
I've officially been hating Harold for a few weeks.
I'd previously cleared out the jets due to crud in the line that I found, but went hail Mary and bought new jets. Don't really enjoy this job, they're fiddly to replace, but worth a shot.
And he lives! Did the timing, fuel carb balance etc all over again.
Should have just bl00dy changed the jets the first time, typical.
The is my 3rd set of jets in 5 years, didn't realise they are basically a consumable (suspect they aren't).
Had an exciting plan to go for a drive but the battery is munted from weeks of just idling.
Citi golf to the rescue for jump starts! Actually that didn't work, battery too dead, so on charge it went instead. First drive will have to wait.
If all goes well then I'll be just in time for the local classic car show next week.
I've got a good collection of spares in the boot already, for that inevitable road side repair. Better add jets to the list ffs.
Pics of one of the jets, new vacuum pump that lives on the distributor and physically adjusts the timing when the vacuum changes (quite clever really isn't it!).

Had a great day at the PH 25th anniversary event, met loads of forum users and got to see some incredible cars too. It was well organised and we managed to hang out the whole day and keep busy.
Was good fun getting Harold mixing with some much more impressive metal in the readers cars section too.
We had a challenging time getting there and back because the car is just too low. But I like it low, still digging in my heels lol.
A speedbump in my village ripped the exhaust loose and it eventually started scraping the tarmac on the motorway so we stopped to re-attach it the best we could. Luckily I brought a boot full of tools.
Spare giant jubilee clip was the solution.
Got there just in time, dusted off some cobwebs and looked around the show.
this green porsche was incredible and deserved the best at show award for sure.
Then we set off home, the gravel track from the show area to the road was too much for the old girl and her 2.5 inches of clearance and off came the exhaust again in 2 different places. A few of you lot might have driven past me as I lay in the dirt (with lots of people offering to help, much appreciated!).
Then we had some challenges with fueling, the blocked jet issue rearing its head again with not enough fuel getting in, misfires, carb and exhaust pops. This put us into the hard shoulder twice but twice we arose!
Then it miraculously healed itself and drove like a dream for the last 15 miles.
Never a dull moment. Overall a fun day out!
He is back under a cover and safe, the never ending list of jobs continues.
